Criminal Shite

There was a phase when your stereotypical criminal would steal Impreza WRXs for jobs.

Recently the worst criminals seem to be driven around in whatever the government is using as VIP cars at the time

That’s prisoner FF 8282; the lord archer of Weston super mare.

Any criminal with half a brain would be tooling round in the most boring, nondescript car possible

People such as actual proper drug dealers for example tend not to be ostentatiously dodgy looking or drive cars that might draw attention to themselves, much safer to drive an anonymous  modern hire car or repmobile.

Dickhead low level gangsta (sic) wannabees tend to look dodgy as fuck (not helped by often spending much of their time off their face having sampled the goods). Their lifestyle accoutrements practically come in a kit, including a car that was flash 10 years ago, window tints and a marijuana flavoured air freshener (completely unnecessary given that the interior usually looks like Bodmin Moor on a wet November morning). In my day a blim burned puffa jacket, skater jeans, Dready t-shirt and baseball cap and a BMI score of 12 were also useful indicators.

Grey Golfs and Astras seem to be the low-level choice.  If you're going nicking goods, then a white Transit or Sprinter.  I've always said they were invisible; I've driven enough in my career!

This is the one that's always stuck in my mind - there was a gang in West London that was called the Fiat Bravo Boys because that's what they all drove to avoid attention...

Who is undoubtedly a grade 1 dickhead, but it seems more than harsh to lump him in a group with a pair of evil child molesters.

Round here it tends to be a Japanese crew cab pickup with chrome bull bars. The first four digits of the number plate usually read "BO55" and the truck is likely to feature graphics up the side reading BARBARIAN, WARRIOR, OUTLAW, MOUTHBREATHER, SKINHEAD, WIFEBEATER, or similar.

I have seen sometimes on those old episodes of Crimewatch that they’ve used the actual car if it was found on the reconstruction. I wonder if the cops keep them over for evidence if a case ends up unsolved?

That happened to a Morris Minor I went to look at (unbeknown to me it was stolen at the time). The chap selling it worked for a car/van dealer but was selling it privately, on the car dealers land (a bit odd).  My Dad and I questioned why the the car (G or H reg) had all the older parts on like earlier grille and back arm rests ect. The chap said it was retro fitted with older parts, I remember liking the aerial topper thing being quite fancy. I was going to buy it if I passed my driving test next week if it was still for sale. Thankfully (sort of) I failed my driving test so I never went back for it.

Anyway months later the very same car (with older number plate) turns up on  Crime watch on TV. With the real owner explaining how he spotted his stolen car for sale on the internet, and recognizes that it's his car through the aerial topper and various other things.

I haven't seen him for 30years but I did know 1 of them involved. But as it was done a few times.

Toyota Avensis estates on Irish plates seem to be the tool of choice for the local catalyst thieves round here. Plenty of room for 4 (one to stay in the car for a quick getaway, two to steal the cat, one lookout), and a huge boot for storing lots of catalysts and the massive fuckoff jack and circular saw.

It's said that a silver Ford Focus has been the most anonymous car for the last 20 years, probably used by plain clothes police officers too.

Indeed.  Same as if they were going to drive without insurance or a licence, they wouldn't drive in a way that says "HELLO COPPERS, PLEASE PULL ME OVER!"

In Birmingham, if you see a Golf R or an Audi RS3, it will almost certainly be nicked and being driven by a small-time "gangster" or druggie.

Back when I was at college there was a spate of Transit & Escort van thefts to use in robberies or ram raids

Whenever you read about ‘wrong uns’ Someone will always quote the Mk2 Jag of the sixties being the de facto choice of the criminal. I remember in the early 2000’s the Shogun or more likely a Pajero being the chariot of choice for someone who might break your legs over £50. Anyone else recall what shite was driven by the stereotypical criminal?

I would have said that the wrong 'uns car of the 70s was a Mk2/S Type Jag because they looked a bit sporty/flash but were completely worthless so a telly programme on a tight budget were assured of some top chase/crash action without having to negotiate a lower fee for the bubble permed ponce. If a Mk2 turns up in The Professionals or The Sweeny then you know that by the end of the programme it will have met its end. Conversely if the bad people are driving a Merc then you know its immediate future is assured.

My rotten rusty W114-280E in Wellington was formerly owned by a well known Kiwi-Aussie businessman-Ron Brierley (Bn.1937) corperate raider...former head of the Bank of New Zealand... .knighthood etc

Ron Brierley was on the way to Fiji when he was stopped by Australian Border Force staff at Sydney International Airport in December 2019.
He later pleaded guilty to three charges related to almost 47,000 child pornography images found on his laptop and several USB devices on him and later located at his Point Piper home. Knighthood just ended up in the bin.

Yuk. Anyway..i more than doubled my money on the car when i ditched it.

I seem to remember there was a clip of a white jag going off a cliff which was regularly used by various TV companies. It got to the point that if you saw a pale jag early in The Professionals/Sweeny/fill in drama , you knew it was going to be going off a cliff by the end of the program.

Found it

I can remember one episode of the Professionals when said bubble permed ponce wrecked a (no doubt well past its best) E Type convertible.

I've seen a Focus Estate with minicab plates as an undercover car, and a Sprinter complete with rust stains everywhere and crap all over the dash. I guess they are very anonymous!

Or an apprentice, who lives at home with his parents and doesn't pay board or lodgings.

Big old Vauxhalls were also common as villain's cars in The Professionals Their scaled down American styling looked the part & they were cheap as chips because of premature rust & high fuel consumption, so getting smashed up in a chase was no big problem.

Many of the Turkish crims in London that were (and probably still are) smuggling heroin into the UK, drove silver or light blue Avensis's and Corolla's. Plus they looked as bland as their cars.

There was a behind the scenes of a cop repair shop on Dave a couple of years ago, following Cheshire Police. They rolled in a circa 2000 Astravan in white pretty much on its last legs for MOT. Apparently would have been condemned due to I think rot, brakes, suspension, all sorts, but was reprieved due to the amount of bespoke kit carried on board for presumably counter-terrorism observation reasons.

Meanwhile a very low mileage 308 and an unmarked RPU 3 Series got written off tout suite.
