Can’t see how you’d enforce the two years guarantee on a banger. If you took it back most people would tell you to fuck off, bought privately there is no warranty whatsoever. If it blows up an hour later it’s tough shit.

Isn’t it possible that this is simply an attempt to stop people buying and selling cars privately?

That's possible, but no dealer in his right mind would offer a 2 year warranty on anything more than a few years old. I'd say many will just say six months guarantee take it or leave it, which is basically what EU law says dealers have to do anyway.

I think it's more a law to "help" poor people that will have the opposite effect, it will drive them off the roads because cheap cars won't be around as they'll be too much of an open ended commitment for anyone, private or trade, to sell.

Why would that be an aspiration?

I’m sure someone will be along quoting all sorts of laws but this is how it works in the real world. It’s no different to most banger traders, they’ll run one business for a year tops, wait whilst the invites to court mount up from people that have bought a clunker then wind up the business and start again.

People need to get some responsibility about themselves there’s too many rules out there that are unrealistic. Buy a £1,500 Astra from someone’s house and it’s fucked in six months it should be tough shit. Everyone thinks there’s some reset button and if it all goes wrong someone will come and bale you out.

One reason might be that they're more polluting so if people scrap rather than sell them it'll help the Green Deal targets and the car manufacturers.

Another might be cause more to be sold through the motor trade where there can be more control, e.g emission checks.

There'll be others but these are a start.

It would be part of an aspiration to get everyone off the road below the level of the upper middle classes. Just starting with the poor first.

This is why, in theory it’s an aspirational idea, it rids the world of anything over a certain age.

how long does the average car last?

I think this is the real reason, but people won’t want to hear it I guess.

I would tend to agree about Vauxhall radios, but it's hard to blame GM for the new Combo!

No, but maybe Stellantis haven't got around to sacking the people that spec the radios at Opel yet! Although tbf, most small vans don't have great entertainment systems.

It is carnival time here in Spain. Purchase a fancy dress costume for the street parties.

The one in the Maxus is pretty shite too.  Cheap off-the-shelf Goodmans stereo with the shittest, tinniest little speakers shoved in the top of the dash.  It's almost unlistenable.

You don't have to spend too much to replace them. The second set sound like they are VFM

The man has just been to read the electric meter, for the first time in a very long time.  So I had a look to see how the actual reading compares to the estimated bills I've been paying (probably should have done this a while ago but it's not been on my radar), and it turns out they've been underestimating my consumption somewhat and this month's electric bill will be around £450.  Good job I get my bonus in this month's pay packet then...

You didn't beat him unconscious with a frying pan and attempt to put him on the roof of a bus to cover your tracks?

First time, since living  in Spain got a Speeding fine. 😧That is almost 20 years

91 in a 70 KPH. If paid early fine reduced to 50€. No points.

I am an idiot.

A few days ago I ordered a replacement intercooler hose for the Laguna off eBay.  Yesterday I got a message saying "sorry but we're out of stock, would you like a refund?".  So I accepted the refund and ordered another hose, this time off Amazon.

This morning I read my messages again and realised that it wasn't the hose that was out of stock at all, it was the drop link I'd ordered at the same time.  So I've now bought two quite expensive hoses, and both are coming from overseas so returning one is going to be a right hassle.

Still, at least I got £6.90 back for the drop link.

But the poor can't afford to buy petrol and ownership doesn't cause pollution. Plus if you are on minimum wage in the early shift, there's no pubic trainsport early enough, to get you to the first of your 3 jobs.

Macerators - I hate the bloody things. They're basically a device for people who can't be arsed to walk 20 yards to use a toilet. "I want a toilet here." "But it can't be plumbed properly there." "Nevermind, I'll spend £600 on a noisy box that means I can't use the toilet if there's a power cut and in any case is bound to get blocked or fail at some point."

The macerator on one of the toilets at work failed and it was my job to sort it. I switched the power off and removed the cap end from the drain on the outlet pipe and positioned a bucket underneath it. I flicked the power back on and the unit sprang in to life and discharged some foul smelling slurry into my carefully positioned bucket. Ok, I'd proved the unit so the chances were it was blocked.

The toilet is positioned in the corner of a small room facing diagonally out into it. The macerator is on the floor directly behind the pan; this means that the macerator can't be slid out to the side, the only way to access it is to remove the toilet. The cistern came off easily enough but one of the screws holding the pan down wouldn't budge and I had to resort to sawing through it with a hacksaw blade.

With the toilet out of the way I could get the lid off the macerator and sure enough it was blocked with a mixture of shit and wads of toilet paper. Double-gloved I removed the offending blockage while ruminating on the life-choices that had brought me to this point: scooping up my colleagues shit.

I put everything* back together, switched the power back on and was ready for a test flush...

*Remember that cap end on the drain on the outlet pipe? I didn't and after flushing the toilet was promptly showered in liquid shit. FML

Arranged on Sunday with chap to view a car today. He called me yesterday can we do Wednesday, he now has to work until after we agreed. Ok, fair enough, he let me know in advance.

Seen another car, more local to me. Guy gives me all the info, sends a few more photos etc. I ask if I can view this afternoon or this evening, radio silence.

First car now can’t do Wednesday as his wife needs to use the car.

Then people selling wonder why prospective buyers ‘mess them about’.
