sloth
G'day fellow chodmolesters. ive been a bit inactive, due to many many reasons. im back with a new hunk of swedish to keep me busy whilst that there beer thingo does its best to munt the world. ive had a few volvo 240's in my time, 1 swedish built 1975 245 2.1 dl, a 1982 244 gl flathood, built in that there oztraya and a 1983 240 gl also built in the colonies, that had a 1jz swap. it was saldy sold due to a divorce and being skint. heres a link to the blokes i sold it to. ... fast forward 2 years and just before xmas i was browsing bookface marketstall and spotted this: 12/1988 build 240 GL wagon badermatic. it has a B230f, and 142,000 miles on it. owned by 3 pervious owners, the second the vice chairman of the volvo owners club australia. it has a fat history file and had its timing belt, tensionmer, waterpump all bushes and balljoints and a full fluid change in 2018. it was sold to owner 3 in may 18, and he used it daily to cart tools and surf boards. it started leaking water into the interior in oct 19, so he pulled the screen and found this: mmmmm lush. by dec he needed cash, and i swooped at a lovely $500. it basically needed the rust repaired and a full going over. theres laquer peel on the bonnet and roof but im nto fussed. oddly its painted Nissan night glow, as it was built in the clayton VIC nissan/volo/triumph/toyota factory as a CKD kit. the last month of CKD builds was 2/89 so its a late one.... it copped the good harness, lh 2.2 and a aw70 trans with the transd cooler etc. it has working a/c and everything apart from the headlights and wipers work properly... me and the two eldest drove 4 hours one way and trailered it home. they love it. i got on with rust repairs. now im no body man, im a mechanic and have no patience. so i cut out the rust, migged in some replacem, ent cuts from a wcrapper and geround it back i then applied wob, and sanded badly the resultant mess. satisfied i then ignored the other project, and sank some nice beer. washed these in the dishwasher as they were full of shite. finally got my garage cleaned up and got the thin g inside, and layed on a coat of etch, then 5 coats of primer... that brings us to today. next is paint then screen then the dreaded roadworty test. sloth
hahah, ive measured it for that 3 times. theres a lad in sydney with one already done. id love to but it means new diff, plus cutting the tunnel etc. and the victorian version of vosa hate that stuff. mods are very hard to get legal here. the 1j volvo had no body cuts, but i spent months researching bits to make it fit. you can put an ls1 and t5 in triumphs though without cutting...... triumph wiork will commence once the volvos done. its meant to be my wedding car for july 2021..... full resto. i.e media blast, bodywork paint etc. i must be ,mad... mk2_craig and GingerNuttz

danthecapriman
Lovely. Watching with interest as a fellow Volvo licker. Nice interior on your 240, I’ve got a very similar one in my 740 but my seats are tan leather instead of cloth/velour which I’d prefer. Nice Trummy too! sloth

Nice Trummy too! thanks, i do like the beige cloth. it suits the green/blue. i have a genuine volvo dash mat to fit aswell when done. my first one had red cloth which is now apparently worth 100000000000 pesos. that was a nice thing, i need to try a 740. the outside doesnt tick my box, fnar fnar, but theyre meant to waft ok. Yeah the red interior is quite rare, I saw a 740 saloon with it once and it looked stunning. Personally, I prefer the 740. They’re not as solid feeling as the 240 and are a bit more flimsy in some ways (electrics & plastic trim!) but I like them. I’ve had two now, an 87 gold saloon and my 88 green blue metallic estate I’ve got now, both 2.3 GLE autos. I’ve had a 79 244 2.1 DL which was a beast! And a 340 and 850 too! Love em! sloth

sloth
so i did some work. fitted new sound deadener - like dynamat, then some felt type stuff, finally washed the front carpet inn the washer and dried it then refitted. cleane dall plastics in the dishwasher, and reassembled. vax'd the seats etc. fitted my ebay special retro look head unit and realised the wipers now dont work at all. then removed all the paint, filler and realised that the patch id made for the corner wasnt great. so redid it. i used some a pillar sections i cut out of a wreck. ill zap that in with the mig tomorrow. then to tackle a few small holes the wire wheel found..... getting there... paulplom, Six-cylinder, scdan4 and 4 others
sloth
considering it was a mouldy wet mess when i got it, and totally bare inside last sat morning, im happy. just need a gear lever surround, mine exploded into 9845748374548 peices. im spending more time unfucking stuff, like the wiring for the radio, that was wrapped round all the other dash shit, then had the plug snipped off, a hyundai one soldered/twisted/ osmosied on and a hyundai getz cd polayer inserted. badly. oh and the extra seatbelt buckles and inccorect door mirrors cos the spastic prev owner wanted it to look like a pre 82. also found a working hazard relay in a tin of corsa b stuff (orl vaxhalllz is crap m2+6) so that got lobbed in. no more buzzin' noises. might order a new wiper stalk too. fuck it, nearly xmas. juular and scdan4

sloth
got the welder out. migged in the patch panels. blew up my welder as i did the last spot. got the wob out, and applied liberally. fitted a radio and sorted some electrical stupidity. turns out the wiper stalk is fuckeyed. by that point the filler was dry so i broke out the makita orbital, and smashed out the sanding. now time for some bar coat and primer. sloth
Todays update. got on with fitting the head unit and trying to fit some door speakers. said speakers need spigot rings so thats a fail. headunit working like a champ. its a Wish $26 special retro thingo. works fine. finished up the dash so it looks liek this. big red toggle is elec fan overide. just waiting oj the new wiper stalk to sort that out then a full clean and spruce up. in other programming, the lhr door card was a litany of shit bodges. the material peeling, the board broken, clips gone, and the retaining lug rsammed thru the board. oh and the handle trim exploded on removal.... glued that back together with gr234 sucess. stripped the card, and reattached the loose metal top peice to the bopard, and reattached clips and then sprayglueed the mess together. all done. looks like this. finally, fitted some 20smd interior light bulbs. no pics as it took all of 3 seconds. next up is primer , but i start back at work on the 7th dso im trying to do as much as possible. oh and it needs an oil and filter. better get it done.... danthecapriman
sloth
bit of an update: after the decidedly ashitarse paint reaction i took all affected areas to bare metal, and used upol acid etch, along with new expensive primer, i then keyed the primer with 800,and water, dried it for a day, then applied 4 coats of base, 1 as a dust then progreessively wetter, followed by 4 coats of laquer. 20 min dry time between, out of a can. heres the result. i havent polished or de nibbed or anything, this is out the can. its not perfect - but the small pin holes are covered by the screen seal and trims and will have stikaflex applied also. yeah its a bit wibbly but m no body guy. screen fitter is booked for next week, $200 supplied and fitted top tint bad boy. cambelt, plugs and wipers arrived. so all systems go. id like to have it on the road by jan.... big ask..... danthecapriman, GingerNuttz, Supernaut and 2 others
purplebargeken
Mate whanged the lower door section of his Dolomite on a gate post suppirt in the summer. I cleaned it all up, did it properly and had the same result. Took the entire section down to bare metal and did it again. Was petfect second time round. Bloody thing.
