If you claim a windscreen replacement on your insurance. Can they write the car off?

Possibly.

Yes in theory but in practise it's not likely, you can get most glass remade if absolutely necessary.

But if the price of the glass is more than the insurers valuation of the car?

Given it was written off it is possible it wasn’t removed - more likely the rear light is being stupid though because Citroen

I’ve left the battery charger plugged in and it seems to be climbing very slowly so it might actually charge it yet!

Left it overnight and it’s reading around 9v now (well at 3am) so the charger is slowly bringing it back to life it seems. Not got the balls to leave it on when I’m not there though

Do you drive this?

Had the vel satis screen replaced and it was the last one in UK apparently - they took a while to hunt it down.

I asked what they would do if it happened again and they said either they would get a European one shipped over or remake it.

Posted

We had a screen fitted to a modern van the other week and were told that the rain sensor might play up as its a LHD screen. If it does then a slightly longer wiper blade should sort it out.

Posted

They will just remake them when stocks are low, I heard of someone having a Aussie charger fitted with a new screen which was in stock in the UK and had been date marked made in the last few years - there were only 200 of them sold new here back in the 70s unless you have a wierd commercial variant of a van like an chassis cowl transit it's not something to worry about.

When I had my Holden the insurance said they would bring over side glass from Aus if needed.

Mk5 golfs rust from the inside out. Once you see the bubbles on the outside it's too late.

I suspect someone has done a filler job on that. Silly when VW covered it on their corrosion warranty, even at 10 years!

12 years! AND they dont even bother what the cars like, i took in an 8.5 year old Jetta, 150,000 miles, ex taxi ropey bodywork, with a front wing that had been dented and the dent pulled out, filled and painted and they replaced both and did the sills too, only had to pay for blending on the front doors.

They wouldnt entertain rust round the boot handle and number plate lights though despite it affecting every Jetta and Passat estate tailgate ive ever seen, they would do a goodwill contribution of 50% but this was still nearly 600quid because the tailgate itself for a Jetta is 450quid plus labour and painting

There's hope for me to get a sun strip windscreen in the 635 yet...

PS on the subject on windscreens, or infact any glass on your car, if yours gets cracked or smashed and the insurers send you to national windscreens or autoglass who usually fit non genuine glass which in my experience chips, scratches and stuff more easily, can you insist they source genuine OEM glass with the manufacturers logo on it, like from the manufacturer or main dealer rather then the stuff the windscreen company gets in to fit? Or can they tell you thats what youre getting so lump it?

I ask as ive seen folk on pistonheads and marque specific owner forums insist on 'genuine' glass because sometimes the non genuine stuff messes with rain sensors and so on and they dont work properly. I assumed if you said that to autoglass theyd just laugh at you and say glass is glass.

Are Peugeot 306's now *RARE*?

Most of the ones on eBay seem to be top of the range and £1000+. There don't seem to be many 'normal' ones left, or many cheap ones.

They're just a dolled-up ZX aren't they? Or do they now have a 'following'?

Anything old enough to be OMG BARN FIND M8 (so about 2000 back) is being advertised at daft money at the moment outside of AS

Don't know but I wish I had, despite being Pilkington my new one does indeed chip and scratch very easily. Don't even get me started on Auto Windscreens...

I got told by the glass fitter who did our Civic that their branch had far more problems with imperfections with genuine Pilkington windscreens than the aftermarket brands. Seems that quality has dropped with them in recent years.

My rear brakes sound like they're grinding, but only when cold. Once the car is up to temp the noise disappears completely? Pads are look low-ish but not metal to metal, discs look ok. I've had the car about a month. It's a 2005 Citroen C4.

Shitefest 2015. Some of us took a scenic route from Llangollen to Aberystwyth. Along the way was a country lane. Narrow with drops either side but steep uphill and could see road winding up . We also went over a stone bridge which I think now was elan reservoir. I can't find the road though or confirmation for sure if it was elan Res for definite. Want to take a road trip over weekend.

Yeah my old mans Mondeo is a 63 plate, should have Saint Gobain Sekurit glass but has had a replacement windscreen at some point and its a Pilkington, its scratched to buggery already, the drivers wiper has put marks on the screen in an arc where they wipe, to the point it may be mot failure soon, and has a chip in the passengers side outside of the swept area which has been repaired, this car was like this when purchased at 3 years old and 50,000 miles, by comparison I run a 155,000 mile ex taxi 09 reg VW Jetta with original VW glass and its better nick than the Mondeos max 3 year old screen was.

I once had a "Safevue" screen on a mk4 Astra, no idea which company was fitting those, and it was utterly hanging on a 6 year old 60,000 mile car, like it had been attacked with a brillo pad I mean.

I bought a cheap solar battery maintainer from Aldi, connected it straight to the battery and came back to a flat battery several months later. Annoyingly you can only return items instore for a few weeks so I'm waiting for them to send me a postage bag to return it. Is there a way to test it other than connecting it up and waiting?

I had one of them. Not only was the battery flat, it had killed the battery. Luckily the battery was still under warranty, so got it replaced. Stuck it on another battery to test it and it was charging at 18 volts!!

18v won't kill it most of those solar panels only put in a few millamps and will take a Caribbean summer to charge from flat

Once the panel is loaded down with the battery the voltage will drop. The float charge current and parasitic drain is around the same as a lot of these panels, so unlikely to overcharge.

Several stupid questions here all at once, but here goes...

The Oldsmobile is nearing the time when I take it for it's first MOT in my ownership. I have done the mechanical stuff required such as replacing the broken transverse leaf spring at the rear, new brake pads all round plus a replacement brake calliper etc. Plenty more jobs to do but I want to see if it will pass an MOT before embarking on the other stuff.

The ignition barrel comes out with the key, ( needs a new assembly) has a push button for the starter, the handbrake is foot operated and is designed to be pumped up to apply (works fine with a couple of presses) and the hazard lights are operated as standard from a tiny, almost hidden rocker switch on the steering column.

Will the tester be baffled by all this? Do I need to leave notes in the car explaining that it is 'american' and has different ways of operating stuff or will he/she just figure it out?

Posted

Stay with the car, if they'll let you then you may as well work the controls while they check rather than their assistant.

Just explain it's a bit of an oddity, I think a sterling lock that doesn't is a fail though.

Shifting a car using the starter motor, which gear is best/least likely to cause grief  ? Neet to shift an Omega down the side of my house and it won't run

I'm certainly not pushing 1700kg

First or reverse will be the best for not killing the starter

Posted

As said, 1st or reverse is best; as long as you don't operate the starter for more than 10 seconds at a time and allow at least a minute to cool down between uses it will be fine.

205 insurance, anyone got suggestions for cheap cover?

Normal insurance is really high on these so try classic cover if at all possible.
