Yup, not only petrol powered things do it either:

Look from about 8:40

That was a pretty common occurrence with the class 55. I think oil used to collect in the silencer drum and spontaneously combust. normal solution was to give it a bootfull, the copious exhaust fumes extinguishing the flames.

Thats a brilliant picture, like a sort of moody The Smiths/Jonah Lewey album cover.

Yah!

Some of you may recall a black Renault Fregate, over in Calais with an alleged blown headgasket, 500 euros..   On it in a thrice, I got bummed off to a local.

Guess who's emailed me back this afternoon?  Oh yes indeed....

Ordered a memory card for the shiny new tablet I got for Xmas last week and it arrived today, not in the usual huge clear plastic packaging monstrosity that needs gardening gloves, strong scissors and a large scotch to get into uninjured, but in a small cardboard envelope.

Little things mean a lot. :)

This should be a grump, robbing dogs, but it's a means to an end so paid up:

How much of a stereotypical "car bore" voice does the guy being interviewed have, fantastic.

I've just posted this as a reply to a 'new cars are best and save lives' post on another forum, unless I got something wrong it has made me smile.

Looking at this chart it looks like it has possibly dropped by around 1500-1800 since 1990 to just under 2000 deaths. Those 2000 deaths would include pedestrians/cyclists/motorcyclists (probably the highest of the lot)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Killed_on_British_Roads.png

There are 63 million people in the UK so that is a 0.00317 chance of being killed in a road accident, even less as a car driver.
How much lower a risk do you think it is by driving a newer car?

There is also huge classic car ownership in the UK, do you think people shouldn't use their classics because of the risk when they are out in them?

You are more likely to die from a DIY injury at home. Do you not do DIY because it's more risky than driving?

2293 people died in transport related accidents in 2011 (922 in cars) 3593 died because of a fall, so don't walk anywhere!

In my opinion the 'safety' of cars is just a massive sales tool because that it what the car industry is, a profit making organistion, not a health and safety one.

I'm a man of simple needs, or a needy simple man - as my wife will tell you.

Whitesnake on the radio ,4 miles of winding road I know like the back of my hand , no traffic and new tyres.

Getting air on one sharp brow, whilst screaming 'Here I go again on my own'

Forgot all my worries and concerns for a few minutes, I'm still grinning 4 hours later!

I used to do that in Cyprus in my Capri and X1/9; more so in the Capri as at that time I lived right at the top of a mountain.  Sun out, Mud on the radio, nobody else on the road... yeah that'll do! :-D

I could choose a car on the basis of its NCAP rating.

But if I did that, I'd already be dead inside.

Drove to work at 6am in the summer before like that! Window down, something suitable on, fuck fuel economy, suspension in sport mode and try to hit 6k every gear change!

Too poor at the moment to do it though!

When I create artwork I work from several photographs, even if it's fantasy artwork, because you can't draw something if you haven't got at least some idea of how things in the real world look and behave.  When it comes to automotive artwork I tend to use a lot of references and as a result I have this habit of getting the proportions not quite right.  This has led to a distinctive look, but not one that I'm always happy with and I've been looking for a solution to this that didn't involve buying a lightbox and tracing paper.

What I discovered tonight is that I can mark out basic details of a car - headlight location, wheel size, cabin width, that sort of thing - with a device that has been quite literally staring me in the face.  A computer monitor serves as a very good camera obscura, of sorts, and allows me to build a sketch from a few reference points.  This then makes it much easier to fill in all the finer details free hand and alter an image without having to redraw elements fifty times to get it almost correct.

As a result, I've had a bit of a confidence boost with this sketch which is just about the most complicated car image I wanted to create.  Unlike straight forward tracing, this method still requires me to put all of the lines in freehand and all of the details too, but it helps with that initial stage of layout which can be very difficult.  It's also helped to highlight where I've been going wrong with some elements so with time I may even be able to do without the lightbox.

So here's the first victim of this technique, a Panhard PL17.
