Nope, that is exactly the way to go but there is a twist!.

When you get off the plane, take your time grabbing the luggage, go for a dump, grab a coffee and saunter to the rental desk when the queue has thinned or vanished.
If your luck is in all the bargain bobbins will have been shifted to those in a hurry and you get a free upgrade.

I learned that from an Arthur Hailey book I read (Airport?) years ago - must have been in my teens. I've got upgraded on several occasions, on others I got what I'd booked (maybe I wasn't slow enough or everyone else was doing it better than me!) and it back-fired once as they'd over-booked and didn't have anything left and I had to wait another hour while they found something!

I got upgraded at Rome, when I handed back the keys to a Megan scenic with the words, "No I'm not driving a French car"

Ended up in a lively lancia.

Windgates, the road between Bray and Greystones, Co. Wicklow, 1979. Apparantly the K20 was orange and was destroyed getting it down

I find telling them that my car cost less, and I've had it 3 years and done 60k in it, works quite better.

Started a new job this week and it is going well.

Also fitted this

Which means with a confirmed 9psi of boost, I have been mostly taking the long way home.

Ha, waffle ho.

Shame, they have nice mugs, ours here has plain white mugs, boring.

How times have changed. Halfway up I'd have to have set the timing back a few degrees and tweaked the mixture screws.

It's amazing how well modern vehicles go up to 6000-odd feet without even flinching. Impalas are comfy cars, had one for a number of years.

Going up the Tioga Pass 3 years ago, in a rental Mustang V6 we hit 10000ft with no real world noticeable loss in performance. Earlier in the day we had left Death Valley at -282 feet and 49c. Zero change in fuel (same tank full) and roof down the whole way with air conditioning on.

Quite cool really.

Less than you may think. Particularly in base spec trim/engine missing all the expensive shiny bits

Probably pick that up for about what I paid for the Chief

'68 too I think; my favourite. Black RT please, with all the boxes ticked. And yes I would pretend I was chasing Steve McQueen all the time.

Not auto related, but occasionally I'll go down a YouTube rabbit hole and want to end it all.

Currently, I'm on a 'prepper, survival' theme. (Normal go-bags or survival kits, fine, treat yourself to £500 of shite.)

Recently it seems to be all about, urban go-bags, the videos are 99.9% American and always start with "Martial law could come into affect at anytime, the economy is unstable and overseas threats are coming to attack every baby with a pipe bomb and to piss on the flag"

So of course we all need 'urban' backpacks to get you home or so you can survive 72 hours. Now, I live in an urban environment and I don't know if I'd need a Compass, a signal mirror or a sewing kit.

It's fascinating, but I'm not sure for all the right reasons.

Blue Ridge Parkway. Did a bit of that with a friend in his Mk1 Diesel Golf.  And a hateful, gutless little shitbox it was too. Still a lovely drive though....

Similar to this I have found myself watching: steve1989mreinfo on the tube, it's kind of soothing in a Bob Ross painting kind of way but with the added interest of him eating 20 to 30 year old mre's.

Just back from Berlin. Had a brilliant time! Saw everything on my list barr the Trabi museum,  I like Trabis and have driven one, that was great fun. The Reichstag building was awesome.

Berlin was a wonderful place, very nice people, lovely and clean, only heard annoyed car horns on two occasions. Nice selection of food but not much traditional German stuff. Had a couple of currywursts instead.  The best one was in the food hall of the Mall of Berlin. I remembered enough German not to make a twat of myself too.

They had a Lidl which was bloody posh. I compared it to the one in Tottenham on the way home this evening. The one in Tottenham had a security guard on the door.

Sigh....... I'm back in London then.  Fuck.

Speaking  of Trabis, did you manage to visit Höhenschonhausen? I  think there's a Barkas displayed there

I've been house hunting recently and went to view a place a couple of weeks ago, it is in a good area and is obviously well looked after but the rooms all felt a bit small. I sort of mentally wrote it off but then had the brainwave of measuring the rooms of the flat I'm currently renting and comparing them to the house - it turns out the house is bigger but has so much furniture and clutter, it felt really cramped. spurred on by this, I went for a second viewing and paid a bit more attention - once the current owners take out their six giant wardrobes, two monster sofas, umpteen chests of drawers, book cases etc it'll do just grand.

so I made a cheeky low offer, a bit of to-ing and fro-ing was done and they have accepted ! I'm buying a bloody house !

and the best bit - a decent sized garage with light and power - can't wait :)

it's off the market already, my mortgage application is in progress and I'm hoping to be in before Christmas

May I be a bit rude and ask what sort of percentage did you low ball by?  We are up that way a bit South of you looking at houses tomorrow and if we can low low ball people all the better. I am as they say a tight git.

It was on at £135, I offered £129, they countered with £132 and we settled on £130. I think I did well but this was based purely on instinct. They were keen to sell as they have found a place they want down south and, as I sold my house in Scotland back in February, I am effectively a first time buyer again so can act fast.

good luck with your house hunting !
