Last night's banger/stock car racing at Mildenhall was very entertaining.

post-79-0-96803800-1524385650_thumb.jpg

Back-to-basics unlimited bangers bought out a varied selection, lots of BMWs which they rarely use in 'proper' bangers as well as some oddities like this pair. Minimal prep required, it's quite odd seeing them race with dashboards, stereos etc in place and running on the key. A Seat Alhambra won the first race of the night and this Beetle (with an experienced and rather capable driver, admittedly) got 2nd in the final then won the DD.

2-litre national bangers were very lively, mostly Mondeos in that class and it's amazing to see the punishment they take and still keep going. I think there may have been a bit of a physical disagreement between some drivers after one race, which the commentator was none-too-impressed with.

It's been a long while since I've seen the 2-litre saloon stock cars. They rarely visit Foxhall (where I usually go) and they were fantastic to watch racing on the shale at Mildenhall. Lots of incidents and stoppages, and they're so solid that we could feel it through the ground when they hit the wall. Again mostly Mondeos in that class (well, bits of a Mondeo bodyshell at least) with a few Sierras and Sapphires hanging on. There was one BMW 3-series being used, which won the final. When I used to see them in the 1980s/90s it was mostly Talbot Sunbeams, with Horry Barnes trundling round in a Datsun Z/ZX.

Luckily they don't appear to have a limit on what time they can finish. Racing started at 6pm and we got away about 11pm, with a lot of stoppages and lengthy clear-up sessions between races. Excellent fish and chips and curry sauce too.

Had a fabulous weekend doing car stuff.

Spent yesterday with my uncle at trackday. It was great - he isn't in the best of health having been exposed to quite toxic chemicals over the years as an engineer.

Glorious weather, pretty respectful drivers and learning a thing or two was great b

So to see him become a little boy and all excited again was amazing. He regaled me with stories of his firenza that he used to mod.

He also fell in love with the mx5 so is now on the look out for one for him. Plus is eager to do another trackday.

Trump, could there ever be anything even remotely positive about him? Well sort of, that twat and his sabre rattling with Russia must have scared the tourists off. I have just booked two weeks in Russia next year for about the same per week as I spent last year in Cornwall. Would still rather have a non racist, non borderline insane, non complete and utter twat as a president of a nuclear country but as I am not a Yank it’s not my fault anyway. Now to get my list of possible purchases, always fancied a Wartburg..........

Please Sir, Sir, Tamworth Bay is talking politics, sir.

I'm not a Trump fan, but from Clinton onwards, US presidents have ignored North Korea.

He hasn't and it looks like some limited progress has been made and there is the likelihood of face to face talks.

I think that's positive

I drove a T reg rover 600 1.8 yesterday! Was with mates, one of whom owns the fine beast (was his fault I might have been speeding yesterday, tried to cat h up with him after leaving later). We went out and he got drunk and I didn't, so I drove us home.

What a lovely thing it is too! Interior is lovely, spacious and bar his utterly shit seating position was very comfy. Went well too, very Rev happy, brakes were a bit meh, and the steering was quite heave, although apparently their like that. All in though, my first ever drive in a rover (all 6 miles of it) was great! Must own one one day!

Went to see my mate in Essex today. He has a slightly shonky red Corvair floppy top. It's a non-runner, changed fuel lines, carb and ignition parts. Just a pump to fit now.

Went out for a drive with Lady Grumpius.  Got fish and chips down in Herne Bay and got this view:

Worth it.

The Corvair is a rolling resto. The non-running issue is frustrating.

Isn't there a Corvair licker on here??

My first drive of a Rover was much the same; a colleague owned a yellow 1977 SD1 in 1989, offered to be designated driver on our pub crawl, however he got horrendously intoxicated at the first pub we visited and passed out in a flowerbed. I hadn't touched a drop as I really didn't like ale then (How things change) so I drove the V8 back to his house; It was like nothing I'd ever driven before, smooth, powerful and smoking like a volcano, anyway back at his house, car parked keys back in his pocket no one dared knock on the door and face his Mrs so we did the gentlemanly thing and propped him up. car keys in pocket against his very own front door; apparently he slept there all night and was rudely awakened when his good lady opened the  door at 8am to bring the milk in and was greeted by a snoring but happy soul mate lying prostate in the vestibule, He was never invited out; designated driver status or not again.

The coaches that National Express use are some definite future bus shite - driver just had to stop to re-close the door because it popped open slightly upon hitting a pothole....

I have been driving the Beetle the last few days in the sun. Whilst driving home on Sunday, I got behind this, It's a Mercury, think it is a 57/58 Monterey. It was lovely and I had a big smile on my face, I even went passed my turn off to enjoy my own private convoy. Sunshine and cars part of what makes things in life great.

I was talking to a mate this arvo (out wiv da mutts) and we got round, inevitably, ot fuel consumption. He is always utterly amazed at me and the money I waste on cars etc, while I am always utterly amazed at the money he wastes on tech - Apple everything in the house, 4 computer screens for a better work environment - Canon cameras everywhere (he's a photographer) and one Nikon....

I said the dollop had done 37.1 miles on £30 of super unleaded. I hadn't worked it out but I did quick mental wrifmatiz and came up with 6-7 mpg. At this I was a tad horrified while he went home both vindicated and convinced of my insanity/trip in a leather jacket with arms that buckle at the back.

When I got home, I remembered that I'd turned the battery off one day while pissing about with it so it would have lost whatever mileage it had done prior to that. That not only made me grin but also reduced my blood pressure to a more normal level. I shall actually check this time

Went out to car earlier and had to laugh.

My Mk2 Fiesta, 950 low spec worth* more than the 2005 mk6 Fiesta ST sat behind it. How many years before the scene tax catches up?

Just shows you its all bollocks :-)

Meh, I did exactly that on the pickup truck so I could change fuel pipes without having to drop the tank. Granted I did it a bit neater, cut three sides of a square and bent up the flap so I could get the sender out and braise in a new pipe then refitted it and folded the flap back down.
