I don't need to explain why it's a grin, do I?

Jag went off to its new owner today. Definitely a case of the right car at the wrong time.

Why is this in the grin thread?

Tonight I cycled over to my lockup to recover this which had been lying there since the Jag arrived due to lack of space.

True but this particular one is a Mk1 I believe.

Thanks. Yeah, it's running a 2.0 engine from a Clio 182 so is slightly* faster than it was when new🤣

This Horizon.

How'd you find a Plymouth Horizon in England? I didn't know they were sold there. Maybe they weren't...just like the joke about Range Rovers and BMWs not sold in Albania, but a lot of them mysteriously get there.

They were an attempt to copy the successful VW Rabbit. ..some even had  VW engines. This one looks like the suspension or the wheels are a little bit off.

That's a Talbot Horizon.  Distantly related to the Plymouth, but it's not as similar as it looks.  They were sold widely here and in Europe.  Not many left though.

They were even built in the UK if I recall correctly. At Ryton. First badged as Chrysler, then as Talbot

Yep they were an interesting design with Simca mechanicals and torsion bar suspension, IMO a bit more interesting than a Golf or Fiesta, but sadly not as well built.   We had them on the fleet where I worked, and they were quite nice to drive and very practical, but to me they always felt a bit tinny and plasticky.

The Horizons and Dodge Omnis are all off the road here in the States, but 4 stick in my mind. Chrysler was in a tailspin at the time, and those little Ersatz Rabbits were their biggest sellers. Eventually Daimler took them over for the reserves they could squeeze out of them. Aren't a couple of French companies doing the same now?

  • a lady at work wrote me the the only Letter of Reference I ever got in my life - she drove a 1978 Omni, been 40 years, but I'll use the letter someday
  • race car legend Carroll Shelby attached his name and a turbocharger to a special Shelby-Omni in 1986("a candle in a dim decade")/it was still a 2.2 L 4

  • I stopped at 1:00 AM on I-80 because of a wreck wherein a loaded semi drove over the top of a Horizon with a single mom and three 5- to 10-year-old girls inside - some miracle preserved the life of all the victims
  • I came across a Horizon that hit a 700-pound elk at 60 or 70 - the animal went thru the windscreen - blood everywhere - most of the elk was in the back seat - no clues as to what happened to the people

I was helping a friend of the wife's yesterday with some DIY and was supplied my tea in this mug.
