I'm popping in to see Stuboy's mate who has the Mondeo citrines tomorrow, might be a few useful parts for me in his shed. Look out for a rare 'base meets citrine' photo tomorrow :-), arguably the most and least desirable mk1's.

Over the weekend I took the 20 year old Astra that could do with a service on a 250 mile round trip to Dorset to see family and despite a bit of paranoia it was fine. After getting stuck in M5+Bristol+sunny weekend chaos on the way down I took the non-motorway route back which took bloody ages.

I did spend half an hour rebuilding the front end of my cousins 12 year old Corolla People carrier thing after his Mrs reversed over a low bollard and ripped the bumper off.  This was made more entertaining by the fact it was accomplished at 10:30pm using christmas cracker quality tools found in assorted family hatchback toolkits after I had consumed several beers and lit by a couple of mobile phone torches.  This is why I never own smart clothes for long.

Today I had my first blowout,  OSR tyre on a work van let go at 60ish on the M6-M69 sliproad.  It was less dramatic than I feared though I'm glad the road was quiet.  After calming down I naughtily donned my hi-vis and changed it myself on the hard shoulder as some poor bugger was going to have to do it and I know where the jacking points are.  Slight brown trouser moment when a Romanian plated HGV made a BBBBRRRRRRRMMMMMM noise down the rumble strip 50 yards behind me.  Tyre was a Michelin so I'll be sticking to Ling Long ditchfinders in future ;-)

Tonight Bucketeer thought he had found a quiet field to pitch his tent when a motorcycle gang raced by!

Metro delivered to proper old school garage (Bogg Bros in West Lutton) in attempt to cure* poor running issues.

made it there too, under its own power, too, just....

car was fine while under way, though it was stuttering like mad when i was truing to pull away or if i had to ease up on the throttle.

so, a service and tune-up are on the cards. car has been sent with a full carb service kit and ignition parts, and i cannot wait to get it back, running properly.

hmmmm, could well be.

main problem is that the other half has had their little fingers in to it to have a good fiddle, on all sorts of things!

Boggs though are good with carbs, and still have a fully functioning Kryton Tuner and the knowledge of haw to use it.

other firms local havent been interested, mainly i guess cos you cannot plug a laptop into an A-series engine.

last time it was running like crap, about 3 years or so ago, Bogg's were able to whisper the Metro into such a happy place that it ran like a dream. its an old metaphor but the car really did run like a wee sewing machine. so i'm hoping for that again.

Not on an A-series! My guess is a bad condenser, modern ones are utter crap.

If it's a 1-litre, the points gap can close up. Probably because the points sets are also crap. Mrs DW became an expert at re-gapping the points on her Mini...

Just driving back along the M4 from Newbury to Bristol in the Laguna with the missus at the helm. Currently averaging 31.4mpg with the aircon on and crusing at a respectable speed.

A lot of police out tonight though! We've seen 3 undercover cars pulled over different cars and 1 police car taking their usual spot in the Police vehicles only layby, westbound between the two Swindon junctions. Naturally with the roof line just above the shrubbery and the policeman lying flat on top with his speed gun pointing out. With the sun on his back, it makes him pretty invisible!

The police will have had rich pickings there.............. last week I joined the M4 at jct 15, and stayed at a steady 65/70. I was the slow one ! Overtaken constantly, vehicles doing well over 90, and a few must have been exceeding the ton.

I'm amazed that Mercedes thingy managed to get up onto that bollard thing with no serious bodywork damage! How the fuck did he manage that?

Likely heaving the wheel + speed... (like you want to James Bond it) then massive brakes at maximum lean angle >> Voila!

I've seen more plod about this week. Luckily I'm averaging 38.9mpg at 59mph with the air con on full icy cold blast.

If not on it he's at least fairly close to the front jacking point.

Perhaps, but it's a bloated heavy modern, so how he got fast enough to do that in a busy residential area is beyond me.

But its German though. So a ridiculously high second gear and overboost in it to get the low 0-60 times, that buyers are fixated on.

Went to local scrapyard today and gorgeous a spare wheel for the gay pug. Also got a new gear lever with numbers on,my daughter couldn't find reverse. While there he has a j reg rover 216 gsi that he has just put on eBay. So it's an auto and very nice. Bit of tlc and a valet and jobs a good one. Also has towbar original dealer plates and bonus national Trust sticker. 75,000 miles . Mot till Jan 18. So fitted my gear knob and now highest bidder on said rover. Can't do links off phone but it's in atlas salvage st helens.

I did sit in two Mondeo Citrines today, but alas forgot to take pictures! Interestingly the dash is exactly the same colour as in my base, with fewer blanking plates :-). Seats are great though.

The average 'heavy bloated modern' could out accelerate most of the cars on here.

For example, my 1.6 toilet finance Leon TDI is quicker 0-70 than my 605 V6 was by nearly a second.

On a twisty road, I doubt there'd be much between my MGF VVC and said Leon. I compared both round Blyton Park; the only place the 'F was noticeably quicker was the back straight.

I'm not exactly shit hot at the old furious driving but I didn't come off the track.

Moderns can carry a lot of speed and the incremental development in tyre technology means that some aren't half as crap as people think.

Coolant expansion tank on the Volvo somehow acquired a tiniest of holes...
Not a crack, a tiny whole. How's that possible?

New one £30.

Blow molding plastic is an inexact science and sometimes you get a cold shut or a thinning; a few thousand thermal cycles and it springs a leak.

I do love those Si seats

Yep, I should really buy his citrine and garage it as my pension.

Garry reckons only 10 of the original 211 are currently roadworthy.

Forgive this RAV4 daily driver interlude, but I did buy it from here.

When I acquired it, there was quite a considerable dent on the OSR bumper corner.

post-4930-0-95257100-1497987851_thumb.jpg

I decided to invest 99p in an ebay dent puller.

Having seen a youtube video of some Eastern European dude heating his bumper up with a kettle until the  material was pliable I did the same, applied the puller and had a go...... but no joy.

Mrs H. got involved and suggested using a hot towel  - Indian Restaurant style -  and hey presto!

Henceforth I shall consult Mrs H. on all tat fixing dilemmas!
