Shiter down

Had an ‘off’ this morning, the first accident in my 17 year driving career. I wasn’t going fast, but hit black ice on a country road, going around a bend, lost control, spun it 180 degrees and ended up on my side in the dyke. The drivers window shattered on impact (it went down hard) and I was soaked in freezing cold water. I managed to climb out through the passenger door and was assisted up the bank by some friendly and concerned passers by. Not wanting to put a healthy dog down, I had hoped the Picasso would be salvageable but when it was pulled out, I found extensive damage to the offside, in addition to the bust window, the engine must have sucked some water in or possibly some oil as it was all locked up. Plus the inside was full of stinking mud, so sadly the mighty Picasso has gone to the big Citroen dealership in the sky.

I’m okay though, not a mark on me. Just soaking wet and covered in mud, and shaking like a leaf.

My glasses flew off on impact and smashed to pieces, lost one of the lenses in the water, currently got my wallet and its contents drying out on the radiator.

Glad you are ok.

But  I will say it before anyone else. You need to get a Tee shirt.

Ultimately that's the only bit that matters much. I had a bit of a smash just before Christmas that polished off my S40 and I was fucking furious, but we're both absolutely fine and that's what counts.

Having to extricate yourself from a ditch full of freezing cold water and broken glass sounds like a good way to ruin your day though, my sympathies.

Oh dear - main thing is you are alright.  Cracking cars Picarsos, and clearly pretty strong too.

Ouch! Glad to hear you're unhurt.  You did manage to "park" it quite neatly!

Shit! Glad you’re ok though, which is the only thing that matters.

That could have been much worse though, there’s a nice big pole there that you missed and that ditch could have been much more full than it was.

Do you have a backup WBOD? Rover working okay? Got to get back on the horse!

Shit, man. Glad you're ok, though. As everyone has said, that's the most important by a mile.

Woahhh. Ouch, sorry to see this. Glad you're unscathed.

One of these days my luck's going to run out, too.

It was driver skill* that ensured you escaped unscathed, @Angrydicky. In fact you used the Picasso as a sacrificial lamb and ensured it took the brunt of the fall.

Seriously though it's only metal and glad you're OK.

Similar thing happened here when the authorities didn't grit the road coming in to work, 3 people slithered off into the ditch and that was when they decided to close that road.

So easily done in the dark, too - "wet road" looks same as "icy road".

Fuck the car, they’re bits of metal at the end of the day. The main thing is you’ve walked away, piss wet through but you’ve walked away.

Glad you're OK Dicky!  That could have been so much worse, although I know it's not a lot of consolation right now.  Try not to kick yourself too much.  These things do happen.

Man, that’s unfortunate for the car but it’s only metal.
Thankfully you walked away. Take care of yourself over the next few days.

Ouch that must have been scary! Did the airbag(s) not deploy? Maybe because it wasn't a head on impact?

Done very similar myself some years back, wrote off the company Combo!

Glad you're out of it ok, and the good ol' Picasso performed it's most important task well, keeping you intact!

I’ve just stuck a new battery on it so it’s good to go again, started first time after sitting for a month just like you’d expect from a Rhonda. I have taken it for a drive around the block with the heater on full blast as it was a bit damp inside, and I definitely feel a bit nervous while before I was a very confident driver. Hopefully I will be ok- I drove past the scene of the accident earlier (very very slowly!!)

No they didn’t, like you say because the impact was in the side I guess, and it was too old to have any side airbags or anything like that?

I feel a bit sad as it was quite an early Picasso and I had done a bit of work on it to improve it.

However! When the guy was pulling it out, his strap went through the rotten sill on the passenger side rear, turned out someone had wobbed 1/4” of filler over it and painted it, quite well I must admit as I hadn’t spotted it.

The same bit on the other side opened up with the impact!

So glad you're ok. Do keep a close eye on yourself over the next few days and get others around you to do the same in case of any delayed shock. It's really encouraging that you're able to talk about it (hopefully not too painfully) so openly already and that you've been back behind the wheel.  Please do let any of us know if there's anything any of us can do to help you recover from this. All the best.

Black ice really is a fucker…

nothing to yours, I got spun round a few times by it on a duel carriageway that was bad enough, was waiting for the roll over but no..

Good hear  you climbed out and walked away…

Dragged out by The Starkys.  Great bunch of lads, ( Liam, Lloyd and Lyndon from memory ) Used to race bangers at Scunthorpe when we raced there.

Hopefully the insurance will pay out as if it was a minter? 🤞🤞

Or is it a 'not worth the claim' job? Shame it happened like this but I guess you'd only have the disappointment of the mot test putting his magic hammer through it in a few months.

I was wondering earlier if that was them!  Those three plus Lewis, used to see them on occasional visits to King's Lynn - 601 Chris "Bling" Medler raced with them too, remember him having Yank limos in bright orange at the Steve Hemmings testimonial and one of the last Firecrackers.

Nah, not making a claim on it, you must be joking! It only cost £280.

Very sad news about the car, but the most important thing is that it did its job and you walked away unscathed.

Sorry to see this @Angrydicky and glad you could walk/swim away, that’s quite a thump the drivers side has taken. As others have said keep an eye on yourself, sometimes adrenaline gets you through the day but tomorrow or the day after you might start hurting. Hopefully all will be ok.

Could I respectfully propose the first photo as a calendar shot? It’s spectacular and at least then  something would be gained from the unpleasant episode.

Depending on whether @Angrydicky is OK with it, the cover for 2026-2027 (due to print next week) is currently blank?

I'm glad to hear that you walked away from it though, Angry Dicky, hell of a smack that the Picasso took.
