Q plates have been around for ages, it would be a suffix-Q for that age of car and year registered.

Is there such a thing as a Q-plate suffix? I thought they were all prefixes.

Fair enough, maybe it got pl8 r8pd in 1983, or imported from a RHD market (think it's RHD, can't be sure from pics).

Actually, these also seem to suggest that Q plates weren't introduced until 1983.

 

Either way, if the Escort was registered (or re-registered) in March 1983 it predates them going to age related plates in August '83, I can't find anything particularly reputable but I believe Q plates weren't introduced until August '83.

They definitely still do, probably mainly for kit cars, less so for stolen recovered as I'd be surprised if the DVLA have anyone left who knows how to spot one.

 

 

A few years ago on the E30 forum, a blatant ringer was spotted for sale on popular auction site, it was a late model Neon cabrio, a special edition that was only sold from about 92-94.

 

It's reg plate (as I remember for some reason) was D122UFT which related to an '86 E30 saloon.

 

Anyway some forum members took it upon themselves to report this to DA MAN, the DVLA sent a bod out, who checked that the stamped VIN matched the logbook (which it did, because when this car was rung it would have been worth the effort to do it properly), and pronounced it A-OK.

I'd ask if that was a ringer but it'd be strange to make one look newer rather than older for tax free goodness

That's very weird. It has a year of manufacture 1991, a 2.3 diesel, and the model is listed as as an '88" - 4 CYL'

Nah, I'd go with 1983 as that I think is also when all the local stuff had to be centralised by.

 

I remember back in 1985 seeing (Arnold Shark, Charing X) a 1977 Merc on a suffix V plate. Import apparently.

Y-reg All Aggro must be unusual as the last one got an X. Oxford reg again like the TR7 so possibly from the same dealer (Hartwells?) who must have had some unsold stock hanging around.

They had a facelift in 2005, nothing major but some had the rounded indicators like that, and some had thin ones from later in the year onwards. Also the shape of the wings, and the rear lights changed.

That was the RV8 but it had different bumpers and a v8

Yes there was, the LE, and that looks like one . Probably put away unregistered, just like people did with the last Minis and are doing with the last Defenders.

Those wheels were a factory option, Stag type 4 spoke alloys were standard.

Another two or three years and the SD1, Citroen CX, and Renault 30 were out on the roads.

Still love these big old straightforward Vauxhalls though. If ever there was a UK car just gagging for a lazy factory V8 version with autobox then this was it.

1972 was the last year of Cresta production, so L reg would be the last. The cancellation of the PD Cresta project led to the PC Cresta staying in production longer than intended.
