Thanks man, it was 9 years ago for me though, I was just surfacing it to show understanding.

Not quite at that level, fortunately, but roughly 3 hours of today will be spent atoning for exceeding the speed limit by attending a physical speed awareness course.

Don’t forget to tell them it’s bad driving that kills rather than speed per se!

As it's a SPEED awareness course I think they'll consider exceeding the limit to be bad driving. I've never done a SAC before, advice on here suggests keeping head down & not being argumentative. We'll see...

Not a grump, but a sad

Posted a Christmas card to some long standing family friends - a couple in their 70's.

Received a phone call today from him, which was very unusual because it's normally her that phones up with him talking in the background if you know what I mean

He was thanking us for the card but unfortunately had some news - she very sadly passed away a couple of days ago. This came as a big shock to me

She always seemed very healthy but recently received a cancer diagnosis, which had been completely symptomless, it was only uncovered during a routine blood test I believe but it was unfortunately too late as subsequent tests revealed it had advanced beyond feasible control/treatment.

Despite knowing about the diagnosis, I don't think anybody foresaw it being such a quick decline. It baffles me how someone can be so perfectly healthy and then within such a short space of time find something like that out and then pass away, especially when its symptomless

Absolutely awful news, especially so close to Christmas. I can't stop thinking that the card must be upsetting him quite a bit given the fact it's addressed to her as well and arrived at probably the worst time possible 😔

With it's MOT fast approaching, I decided I need to sort out the rust issues on the Focus. Because 3-4 months of ignoring it is quite long enough.

I'm a little perturbed because I've realised I'm actually running out of time to do it... This weekend is earmarked for various Xmas preparations/shite and I'll be fucked if I'm doing it on the 23rd/24th !!

Anyway, that's not the grump, I'll find the time somehow

I created a list of all the bits I'm going to need

To repair the sill -

- Cut out the rot and weld in a new section

- Fill with Isopon P38 and knifing putty to create a bodywork finish

- Prime, paint and lacquer

To repair* the wings -

- Grind back to clean metal

- Stick aluminium mesh behind

- Fill with Isopon P40

- Prime, paint and lacquer

*Giffer/chicken wire repair comments need not apply

** No, I'm not just going to replace the wings.

So I set about shopping for what I need.

Got a company to knock some paint up for me based off the vin

Ordered some other bits and bobs which I've been meaning to sort.

I decided to get all the consumables from Halfords, because I've got the trade card discount, they had an extra 10% off coupon available and I also had a gift card which needed using soon.

Did a click and collect order, to be picked up today.

No word of a lie, got there to find exactly half of the order was wrong 🤣

I asked "where's the screenwash?"

Oh, let me find it for you

*Goes to the shelf and pulls it off the shelf*

Ok, and I ordered 600ml containers of filler, but these are 250ml?

"Do you want to go and swap them then?"

Ok... Where are they kept?

*Points* over there, where it says body repair [thanks captain obvious] 🤣

Ok got them, but hang on there's only 1x aluminium mesh there and I ordered 2x?

"Sorry, I'll go and grab one"

Click and collect is supposed to save time. But by the time we faffed about searching for the missing items, and with them going through the system to take them out of stock and allocate them to my order, it would have been far easier for me to simply go in there and get everything myself. Or even better, not go there at all 🤦‍♂️

The way I see it, the sill is getting a weld repair which will be as good as anything structurally, so instead of slapping it with underseal, I'm going to give it a bodywork finish with a skim of filler. I suppose the correct thing to do would be to cut out the entire sill and weld a new one in. But fuck that!

Regarding the wings, they're not structural so some mesh and wob will be acceptable. If I got some pattern ones to replace them they probably wouldn't fit very well, or end up with a good colour match one painted without blending into the door/bumper/bonnet. Or try to find some immaculate second hand ones the same colour which would be difficult because they all suffer from the same problem!

That's what I'm telling myself!

Corner shop convenience* pricing, for your convenience.

Not sure the supermarkets are much cheaper these days, to be fair. Everything seems to have pretty much doubled since last year - but that's a grump for another time...

Kitchen tap has an integrated light that's been stuck in an endless loop of turning on/off. I can't figure out how to disassemble it, the button is totally fucked and unfixable. Had a quick Google for parts and holy fuck, the mixer is £800.

Weird update on this - just had the house insurance surveyor come round as we were hoping to try and go down the storm damage route.

He's emphatically told us we don't need a new roof.  Just take the old insulation out, fit the right amount in so it can breathe, and sort out a bit of leadwork where one house leads to another.  It should therefore, be a much more palatable bill.  I have had two quotes from contractors that the letting agents use, who both want 10k+.   Seems absolutely shifty to me.

So I'm working abroad at the moment, so I'm renting my house out in the meantime.   The letting agent is meant to be managing my property but they're pretty shit at it.   A few terse emails back and forth have been sent today.

Sounds like it's got one small leak and some overzealous insulation blocking the ventilation

I ordered a not cheap kitchen from B&Q on the 24th October but it only arrived on Saturday as one particular cupboard was out of stock.

One of the smaller plastic pieces received was broken into 2 so I went to B&Q the same day to arrange a replacement which arrived today (delivered by them) broken into 3 pieces 😂

Also, my dad’s a time served joiner and he ordered it and he’s fitting it. When he’s gone through the stuff that’s been delivered he’s realised the young lad he dealt with in B&Q has ordered a lot of wrong parts and the correct replacements will only arrive on the 20th December 😩

I’ve got over £700 pound back so far though for the incorrect parts!

The only thing I know insulation can block is heat escaping.

Not trying to be rude, but that would indicate an utter lack of understanding of what insualtion can do.  Incorrectly applied insulation that blocks ventilation can cause some awful damp.  It can also track moisture from one place to another and do all sorts of other negative things to a house.  Insulation absolutely has to be installed correctly, otherwise you cause more harm than good.

No sorry, you are being rude.  Thermal insulation is the reduction of heat transfer.   Maybe I was being over simplistic in my first post.  There is very little information about the issue(s) with this house. Say this that and the rest is the problem is a pure guess.
