The grumpy thread

I know the speed limits for vans but it's the first time I've heard of the limits being applied to van-derived cars. I think the speed awareness people are wrong on that one.

There's no actual definition for a car-derived van, hence the DVLA's description being wooly even by thlleir standards. It's based on what the person who registered the vehicle put on the form. You could have two people driving in convoy in identical vans and only one of them would get a ticket. The limits on DVLA page can't be relied on, it's been wrong before and it's not quite ic.correct now.

I've never managed to get a straight answer on whether speed cameras can differentiate between classes of vehicle. The only ways they could do it is by sending an enquiry for every vehicle travelling faster than the lowest speed limit on the road or by having somebody assigned to monitor each camera, both of which seem unlikely. I've never heard of speed cameras catching anybody on a lower limit but I don't want to be the one they make an example of.

I'm fairly sure that only a grumpy cop and a miserable magistrate, or procurator fiscal or whatever the Scots have to deal with, would punish  a berlingo for doing 78 in flowing dual carriageway traffic.

The point is that you are informed of the law innit

I went to visit my Dad in GWynedd hospital.

He's 83.  Was born in Burnley and was speaking fluent giberis/ Welsh* to the nurses. He's got some rare nerve issue which affects his swallow and ability to talk.  They've found something potential sinister in his lymph glands.  I'm afraid that I told the Doctor, to stop using the words potentially more sinister when they mean potentially cancer

Thanks, but I've got one and the battery went flat yesterday 1/5th of the way trying to cut through it! Now charged and ready for action.

Very handy for wheel clamps as well apparently.

I am convinced at some point Welsh names was simply created by slamming a hammer onto a guys jolly roger and recording whatever he screamed out.

I have expressed a similar belief in a Welsh speaking pub in Llanberis and had to take my pint with me.

to quote the TV licensing bastards ... sorry the upright BBC ..

"To remain licensed, please set up a new Direct Debit. It’s quick and easy to do online.

Please take care of this straight away or we may be forced to cancel your licence

or pass your details to a debt collection agency. "

For a telly licence  ?  , that you can choose not to have !

I fucked off the DD as they liked to grab the dosh a month early , as is is not due till next week they KMA and wait for it ..

its about time they got reamed out by some commercial company that can run the place for a profit .

That's the way I see it.  Some people would rather not though.

I found some doctors are quite blunt, whilst others hedge round the subject.

I presume they try to suss you out first to find your take on it.

Does a camera know you are towing a trailer?

Some of the fixed cameras certainly can. I had 3 points and a £60 fine to prove it! :-( Camera was just north of the border on the A1

I'm on the 'don't need one' list now, and part of where I keep the telly keeps this in mind too as it's the other side of the room to the sky/aerial point!

I'm waiting for the knock on the door. Whick I won't answer...

Why do 'modern' keep-fit windows have such low gearing? I could drop a front window in the Dolomite with 1.5 turns - when I pull up to a ticket machine in the C*rsa, I'm pumping away furiously as the glass slides down slower than a stoned snail.

Dolomite one is metal and can take the high gearing whereas newer stuff is plastic?

It is; the licence is mal-administered by Crapita. If some administrative task is being badly done near you, it's probably being done by Crapita.

Your hydraulics have morphed into an espresso machine?

Well now I need to change one of the number plate lights on the van.

Cheers Captain Q3.  Stationary at a set of traffic lights and the idiot drove into the back of the van.  Apparently the 2.6 metre tall 2.3 metre wide white and blue box with no less than four brake lights were too hard for you to spot... Guessing something is bent about the vehicle that did it given the rate at which they fled the scene.

New number plate light is only £12, but that's not the point!

Though we all know that will actually be £24 as they won't match now so they'll both need to be changed...

Worse. I think the coolant has turned to coffee and I can see a steam and leak from the water pump.

Not the birthday present I wanted:

Oh dear gawd... The weather is showing itself to be the traditional pain in the arse I expected it to be. Swapped the master cylinder on the Discovery, rolled around on the wet floor under the car, bleeding the thing. The wind helped by blowing away the new master to booster seal, still in it's packet and that was never to be seen again. The test drive was taken, the car stopped. A glimmer of light in the damp darkness perhaps? No chance!

After that I removed the ABS block partially to access the shuttle valve part hidden under it in order to carry out a wiring modification to rid the dash of a few christmas lights. Upon removal I found traces of brake fluid on the shuttle valve itself. Poop. So after a trawl of the interweb I found a place that can supply two tiny rubber seals and 4 even tinyer circlips for £30! That's it... £30 or get it from the states!

Urgh... I tested the shuttle valves and they still work which is something I suppose, and as the block is letting fluid by I don't want to put my new valves on there (even though they've been sitting in the shed for 3 years) or they'll get ruined. So for now at least I'm inside in the warm sticking bits of wire together.

I'll box the car up tomorrow and do the ABS block when the rings arrive and/ or I can be arsed. It's still raining.

I've just bunged them straight on the oven shelf and stuck a tray under to catch any crap that falls off. 80% success rate.

Pretty sure it will be better than when my mother did them, it took us a while to convince her that you removed the polystyrene underneath before putting it in the oven.
