The grumpy thread

Unless things have changed you aren't allowed to strip the interior in the road car class, I've even seen a scrutineer and driver arguing about whether a Vauxhall Nova should have a boot carpet.

The following grump may be considered offensive to Hyundais.

My daily is a 56 plate Santa Fe. This summer I spent money on it - new discs on the back, two new wheel bearings on the front, four new tyres, full service etc. I bought a new wheel bearing for the rear but couldn't fit it as I didn't have the correct spline bit and couldn't be arsed as I had the wife's golf and daughter's polo to fix.

Its mot is up so I booked it in to a local garage, telling them to replace the bearing and fix a couple of brake pipes that were badly corroded. The two inches before entering the flexi that, for some reason, doesn't have the protective coating the rest of the pipe has.

I was dropping it off in the morning, but on the way there the battery light came on. Marvellous.

I asked the garage to investigate while it was there.

Sure enough, the alternator was goosed. While fitting a new one, they noticed coolant leaking from the water pump. Super.

Mechanic recommends new water pump and timing belt. 5 hour job apparently.

It also needs new front discs and pads, a ball joint, a TRE and a drop link for the mot. Fabulous.

If I hadn't already spent money and now had the alternator replaced, I may have bodged it through an mot and auctioned it off at Morris Leslie's. As it it, I've told the garage to fix it.

Being miserable, I'll now need to keep it for a couple of years to try and get my money's worth out of it. Bum.

At my work we have bins dotted all over the place - paper, card, plastic, cans, general waste. There's only 90 or so of us there and we must have 30 bins of the varying kinds dotted about, as we're very green you see.

I was working late one day and watched the cleaner doing his rounds, headphones on, whistling while he worked, as he emptied all the bins into a single black sack, then shoved it in the grundon outside :D

Ours does that! We have a bin for BLUE ROLL ONLY, 2 for recycling WHICH CANNOT CONTAIN BLUE TOLL and 2 general waste. All ignored! Exactly because as you say, we all watch the cleaner empty them all and put them in the 3 grundons we have, all of which get emptied into the same lorry!

I flick my tea dregs and the bag (I leave the bag in my tea) into the BLUE ROLL ONLY bin now as it soaks up the liquid

How do they work?

I can only think they work on the premise of relying on a man who has drank too much water and his urine comes out clear and in great quantity.

Just finished watching fires that fortold Grenfell on bbc2.

That people like my mum are still living in tower blocks that have such shockingly bad fire safety standards and still nothing is done.

(And this isn't politics as both parties governments have been responsible).

I was speaking to a fire engineer when he was servicing some alarms when I was installing a siren. He said thanks to Grenfell every room in a commercial building will soon need have an A/V device. He can only imagine havok and rolls of notes going to the regulators. You can guess why. The exits thing is going to be a huge problem too, especially with similar era structures.

If you want to see bins being collected in a mind boggling way, Peel Holdings along the MSC take some beating.

They just brushed me off and said I'd have to make a Representation (fill in an online form and wait for 56 days!). Couldn't have been less helpful really. I shall stick to trying to avoid the crossing at all costs. Has generally worked fairly well over the years.

Dartford crossing is the biggest PITA I’ve ever come across in 22.5 years of having a license. The bloody toll should have been scrapped years ago

There's the Standard Car class that you're not allowed to do anything at all, but also Roadgoing Modified Series Production which you can do quite a lot. We're likely equally uncompetitive in both.

The IoM Summerland fire was included in a video I was shown when I did my fire training.

The risk profile of a commercial building is completely different to a residential, other than the external cladding why would Grenfell affect fire safety management? Apart from anything else I can't imagine commercial buildings have any equivalent of 'stay put'.

Day off to get some admin stuff sorted.

Just need to get the head down and power through it; about six hours of concentration should sort it all out.

A neighbour's bastarding alarm system has been shrilling all morning, since about 8am; about ten minutes of wailing, then thirty seconds of blessed peace... then the fucker starts up again.

It's been at this for years to a greater or lesser extent; not quite sure which house it is (think it may be one somewhere in the street behind) but this morning I am sorely tempted to go and find out...

EDIT: oh yeah, and there's also someone getting founds dug for an extension down the same end of the street, so there's a mini-dumper beepbeepbeeping every time it reverses also adding to the mix...

Work last night.

The machine I was running kept fucking up, I was trying to work out why as it'd just been running for 15 mins with no problem. Line lead says "stop fucking around and moving things and get an engineer for fuck's sake". Engineers are on their break so I run the fucked machine as best I could without moving any settings. Engineers come back but have other, more important things to fix, tell me to sort the thing myself.

As I'm trying to sort the machine out and have narrowed down the problem to one specific setting about 5 people arrive and start fucking about with things. Machine is now more fucked than it was to start with. Line lead gets everybody to fuck off and we manage to adjust the machine to work perfectly but moving the setting I'd already identified.

I pick up a stack of cardboard to put in the cardboard baler, turns out the line lead had set his phone on top of it (above my eye level) and I send it flying. It transpired to be undamaged but I was assured that had it cracked I'd have been "torn apart".

Gotta' love being factory floor scum.

I know I'm late to the thread title outrage party, but don't us pedants get a look in any more?

People that appoint themselves as the bus police by starting arguments about whose first and where you should and shouldn’t stand. Probably same Daily Mail clutching idiots that confront people about parking on their road.

^^ Hell no.

Been fancying a Rover 200 BRM for a while and one pops locally on ebay for not very much wedge with OMGHGF. A query on the ask a shitter thread gives a lead of someone who can remedy this situation for not too much coinage.

Finally get a number from the vendor, conversation is promising, same giffef owner for past 18 years, piles of receipts, much loved family car etc..

Then the revelation, the one previous owner who had the car for 9 months swapped out the red leather embossed interior for plain black leather. Why would anyone do this? What’s wrong with people?

It had th silver nose cone which dealers did to tone them down when they couldn’t sell. This could be easily sorted, but to gt rid of that gorgeous interior? Why not just buy the 200Vi in the first place?

As they say at the end of the apprentice, the search continues.

I'm bored.

Hope that didn't offend anyone.

May I recommend then you watch

I also highly recommend the rest of the secret life of machines episodes in general :)

At least that won't result in me buying anything that I may later totally regret.
