A bit of a muddle still with the pre 80 stuff. 
 

It reads like they are still allowing 73-80 To still wear the older plates (If they have them)  to avoid the expense of replacing. Would that technically mean a like for like replacement would still be ok? Still a vaigue muddle.

It seems to say that new plates have to be made to the new standard.

Plus let’s imagine our enthusiasts of the future want to restore a leaf with euro gb tab for authenticity. It’s the same as it was/ is for a pre 2001 car technically needing a post 2001 font replacement if you do it by the letter of the law.

Shame, I quite like having a Silver on Black numberplate to show it's tax and MOT exempt. I don't care what anyone thinks but all my pre-80s cars will continue to wear silver on black plates with pride.  

The GB not being valid on the plate is a real pisser. It means we have to go back to fucking up the paintwork with shit stickers or magnets that fall off everytime we go on the continent. Hopefully in time we'll get something similar back so we don't have to put garbage on the back of the car again.

I think it’s about time all number plates were replaced with a barcode. It would make machine-readability easy, which seems to be important to the future state apparatus. A third numberplate mounted so as to be readable from above would help with aerial monitoring / targeting.

I have black and silver for my 76 manta, but I really want some yellow/white with raised letters like the one above. Trouble is they’re a bloody fortune!

They look shit. I remember reading a Dollywobbler article ages ago about how they were generally out of use a long time before 1973.

I look forward to the other aspect of that article - the EU numberplates we currently have being replaced with the tacky Union Flag plates that have proliferated in recent years.

Personally I dislike GB/Euro flag number plates, not sure they ever 100% complied with the legal requirements when driving abroad anyway. And they look crap.

The recycled numbers system works for here, which is why my car still only has 3 numbers and 3 letters, also only a single one needed on the car.

But, it forms the place of what used to be the tax disc there, if you want to make an analogous comparison.

Fun fact - you have to have both, or none at all. You can't just have a rear one with the GB blue bit. That doesn't count, you'd need a GB sticker too. Interestingly in lots of non-EU countries like Turkey, Georgia, Belarus etc they have the blue bit and country identifier but just with their national flag instead of the EU symbol. They look pretty smart and pander well to OCD types like me.

Whilst I think many cars had reflective plates from the late 60s (and many which didn’t were subsequently ‘updated’) it still surprises me how many early seventies cars didn’t have reflective plates. Notably the Citroen press fleet favoured non-reflective plates.

You're right on all counts. By the late 1960s they were unfashionable because there was a new type. I tend not to like black and silver plates on anything newer than about 1968 as a result so I find it a shame that they're being allowed to continue on pre-1980 cars.

There is a 1990 Ford Escort in my area that has black and silver plates. Why?!

Also I really hope we don't get more Union Flag plates. They're just hideous and tacky

At one time the regulations stated that the reg plate could be white on black if the number itself was pre white and yellow so a car with a cherished plate like CAR1 could be brand new but still have the number plate in the style of the year that the number itself was first registered. The occasional bobby would try and tell you that you were illegal but when you stated chapter and verse they usually went about their business elsewhere.

Presumably to allow people to transfer their existing plate from car to car without having to have new ones made each time

That Salvage Hunters Classic Cars where Drew Prickchard put black and silvers on a 70s Ro80 made me shout Nooooooooo! at the telly for a considerable amount of time.

There was quite a lot of variety in the late 60s early 70s though.  IIRC reflective plates became available in 1967.   My father bought a new G reg BMC 1100 with black plates.  I have owned an F reg Transit with reflective plates that looked original, and at least 2 K reg cars which had black plates from new.

My Spitfire is a 68 and has pressed black and silver plates but they are obviously not original. 

I would get some raised letter reflectives but they cost more than the car and as it hasn't been on the road for a decade it's not really a priority.
