Metros are making a bit of comeback so maybe the Maestro's time is coming.

I have no real problem with the Maestro. As usual there was a lot of big talk they couldn't back up but it did a job. 

I'm just not sure what would need to happen for Jamie Oliver to record a cooking programme where he goes round France in a re-engined '83 HLE.

For what they were they were ok. Basic cheap transport, simple to fix, cheap on fuel and tyres etc. They were in no way a competitor for the Escort, Astra etc though. As time went on and Rover realised this and started marketing it as a no nonsense cheap no frills hatch  it started to make a lot more sense. 

 

I’d still rock a clubman diesel though.

A mate of mine had an early MG Maestro. It had the electronic hag in the dashboard that told you to fasten your seatbelts & I think 2 twin choke carbs.

It was quite quick but incredibly thirsty.

Ahah, the talking Maestro in MG Flavour.  

First of all with the R Series Engine, a 'refinement'. (If that is the right word) of the Maxi E'series turned back to front with the plugs at the back of the engine.  

Then the later S series engine, a further refinement with a cambelt and plugs at the front.  

I've lived with both 'Bing Bong, Headlights On, Bing Bong, Washer Fluid Low...........it was always a novelty at first, then after I while it was Ding Ding, shut the fuck up will you.

reminds me, must top up my washer fluid cos I've had a silent movie running on my dash for a few days now, it won't be too long before I'm totally old skool and topping up because it is empty.

you've took it on the chin with at base really.  I'd have gaffer taped that roof up, taken the fuse out and smoked it until the MOT was out. Then moved it on for the few tokens.  However, can also understand the wanting rid.

Now back up for sale for £750 sans MOT. It appears to have had nothing done to it since 2019. Still looks nice in white, regardless.

That sunroof repair looks like a proper twat to weld in properly. Were it me I’d glassfibre it and just use and enjoy it then worry about it 2-3 years down the line when it wants doing again.

It's not just the sunroof sadly. I pulled the door seals off and discovered yet more rot. It needs some seriously skilled repair.

Which is a shame, because just look at it. PHWOAR.

I imagine a full custom stainless system would be the best way forward... I might have the inclination and (barely) the skill to weld up the roof/pillars, but not the time!

That's before overhauling the brakes, and by overhaul it sounds like it needs pretty much everything based on the previous posts 

If it was £200.... But it's obviously* gone up in value by sitting around for 3 years, now sans MOT, compared to when it had nearly a year's test 😂

Bodge it through test and run it till the test is out, then a banger racer would give you a few hundred. But I wouldn’t give £750, no more than scrap, maybe £350.
