does any of this actually affect MOT-ablity? also IIRC the car has a relatively fresh ticket on it, so I dont think its bridge time quite yet, at least get your MOTs worth out of it!

since Im not sure how the roof is counted when they test the structural integrity of cars come MOT time

obviously I know on monocoque designs the roof can play an important roll in giving the body shell strength

Sad times.  I wonder if a lot of these rot problems are caused by being in a garage unused, especially if it was able to get damp.  You can get the weirdest rust on cars kept in garages that aren't perfectly dry because the moisture condenses on the underside of panels and then can't escape.  Takes a *really* long time for it to happen, mind, so it could be a combination of factors at play.  There's no cost effective way of fixing that roof, it requires intervention from An Enthusiast.

I think some of the rot is within whatever cm of the upper seatbelt mounts. It really needs sorting. If anyone on here fancies it, I'm sure we can discuss terms. Usual story - it owes me £520 and if I can get any of that back, I'll be pleased. Especially if the car can be saved. I'd pretty much agreed with the club that the car is mine now. That was before discovering just how bad the rot is, but I had to know.

When I was going to scrap my 800 people on the forum were interested in the panels but I don't think they wanted to pay much money.

That roof looks pretty grim! Shame really as it looks a good motor apart from that. I suppose a short term fix is to fill it and ignore it but whoever owns it next will need to do something more permanent.

That is a real shame, especially as you went to all the bother of getting it a fresh ticket.

Is it possible to perform a “sunroof delete” in the form of a sheet of steel, a tube of seam sealer and a million pop rivets? Or is the rot in the pillars to severe to bother.

The pictured rot is the top of the rear door opening...

It is a strange one. 800 values are firmly in the doldrums, yet the Rover has been doing better than pretty much anything I've ever owned in terms of views. Is it because I usually own stuff that's just too oddball or is Rover 800 love lurking beneath the surface of the modern classic scene?

Because if you add fins to the Rover, as suggested in the ad, no-one will notice the holes in the roof, hey?

Bugger me that was fast between saying it might be available and saying it sold!!  Didn’t even get a sniff there!

Wow, that was quick! 

I suppose the roof panel is the same on the later ‘Mk2’ models, there must be some of them left in breakers yards, it’s a major job to transplant though. 

Still, even if used for parts, it’s a better end to just going straight to the fragger.

The owner did originally offer it to the club, so I did likewise. Wasn't expecting it to get snapped up so quickly, but will frankly be glad to get this saga out or my hair. I just don't have headspace for another project. The Fox is languishing at the moment while I've been fretting about other things. Hopefully now I can focus a bit.

You tried. And did more than the owners club were prepared to do. That's the main thing. 

Have you encouraged the new keeper join up here? I'd love to find out about what happens next. Fingers crossed he'll try and get it solid...

Opel Mantas were really good at hiding rust in the roof

If it had a sunroof then the car had extra strips of foam glued to the underside of the unpainted roof panel

This came into direct contact with the sunroof panel as it was opened,to stop it vibrating so any moisture would get soaked up straight away

By the time the rust has eaten through the roof enough to be seen,it will be bad enough to need the whole roof replacing

Same with Citroen CXs with the factory sliding sunroof.  A few bubbles around the aperture hid extensive corrosion which demoralised owners who were already paddling in LHM most weekends.  

At least this Rover has got a year's ticket courtesy of DW and may go on to survive with its new owner.

My second cx’s sunroof was relatively* rust free, but drove me insane trying to keep it watertight. In comparison the current Mercedes’s roof is fully watertight and has no rust whatsoever.

      It's a bit of an internal debate in my head as to whether to start a car specific thread on AS. My Mazda thread has become a reflection of costs of running a 25 year old car as a daily but doesn't get much traffic, my Mondeo thread has become a general MK1/2 Mondeo thread (happy about that) and my Invacar thread has become mainly about DVLA admin...but let's give it a go, see what happens.
      As documented in the news and elsewhere, here it is. Joey spud noticed straight away that it needs to be called Yummy with that number plate. But I expect the original owner was the proverbial little old lady rather than a yummy Princess-Di (had to been done) mummy.  In those days little old ladies had been Land Army girls in the war and could deal with the lack of PAS!

      It was just 7 miles up the road from me on the edge of isle of Thanet (which is where the Mazda came from too) and the current owners kindly brought it over from their marshland home in the sticks.
      Paperwork was minimal @BeEP has kindly posted me an excellent set of owner manuals, which is great, and makes a car seem more loved straight away,

      In consultation with @RobT who is a man of taste in such matters an appropriate keyring was sourced from eBay, priorities eh?

      In it's first week with me, I've had the tracking done at a cost of £40 that has sorted out the lopsided steering wheel and generally improved the driving experience.
      Soon, I'll do a list of prioritised jobs. It has an MOT until October. 
      In true AS fashion it has no role on the fleet, or no actual need. But after I failed to secure a second 323 coupé, I just had to have it! I hope it can make an appearance at a future Kent shiters meet, and maybe a very buzzy and bouncy journey to shitefest in May? We'll see.

      Anyone care to put a value on this pile of old shite
      I bought it with good intentions but decided to buy the hippo instead so this is now just sitting doing nothing
      it drives really well with a nice tight gear change, engine starts first time and runs really nice,
      it has chassis rust (don't they all) mainly back cross member, front driverside outrigger, and rear shock mount area,

      Yesterday I was in hospital having surgery on my ankle so rather than rest like the surgeon said I have arranged to go and collect my new car.
      I have been awake all night in pain so what could possibly go wrong! Luckily it's only a couple of hours round trip so I reckon I can do it, if I get really tired on the way back the accommodation in my new car is positively palatial and I can rest up on the heated rear seats.
      Can't wait!

      A strange day yesterday where both me and Mrs Cheeze both bought cars. She is getting a 65 plate Civic which she says she will keep for 10 years - hopefully.
       
      I got a Jaguar XJ6 4.0 Sovereign for significantly less than the cost of her Civic. I'd been keeping an eye on it on Gumtree the last month and the price had been creeping down and I managed to get it a bit cheaper still. With a bit of googling it appears it went through the Morris Leslie classic auction in August. I paid a bit less than it went through there at.
       
      Surprisingly Mrs Cheeze likes it and my Dad loves it. There is some rust on the roof and a giffer repair on one of the arches but it seems solid. Scabby bits here and there but nothing terminal. It has done 59,000 miles and only seems to have done a couple of thousand in the last few years.
       
      It drives nicely but doesn't change up as soon as it should I feel. It isn't going into third until 30mph and fourth isn't until about 75mph. You can induce it to change up by booting it and backing off but thats not ideal. I need to check the fluid level. If it is still doing it after that I'll get a gearbox service done on it.
       
      It is surprisingly small inside. I went to pick up my big mate last night in it and even with the passenger seat right back he was struggling. He managed once I had reclined it a bit.
