volvo 240 collected

Picked up a volvo 240 that I "won" on ebay yesterday. No collection thread but easyjetted down to that London and picked Volvo up at 6.30pm in the dark and rain pouring down. Drove the 400 miles home and didnt get in till 3.20am.

Of course for a 29 year old car it has some issues but none that cant be fixed/ignored.

Is that blue and white thing another drunken purchase?

Its another on going project. 13 or 14 years and still not finished. It a Stonefield truck. Built in Cumnock Scotland in the late 70s early 80s.

An interesting* fact is that Stonefield company was started by the guy that first brought Volvo trucks to the UK.He also started the company that became Volvo Bus and Truck in Irvine. And the Stonefield chassis was designed by the same guy that designed the chassis for Ailsa buses. Not a lot of people know that.

As you were.

Mmmmm, handsome.

Where were these in the Volvo range at the time? Were they pitched at the 3 series market?

No Stonefield was independent from Volvo. It was built to try and replace the Land Rover 101.

We need some pics of that bad boy

If you google image search Q501JKN you should find pics of it.

Another 200 series in Scotchland? Lorks! When they put up a hard border, how the hell will we get them back in to Englandland?

I do like em but they are and were old fashioned, a 240 wallows about a lot. I'm not sure they changed the suspension in any way in the 19 years they built em.

The seats are supremely comfortable and driving position suited me well as I like to be upright and close to the wheel. For those that like a lower, more horizontal position a 240 or indeed, 140/164 may prove uncomfortable.

Really a 240GLT is what Rootes might have built after the Hillman Hunter had they survived or maybe Rover if they hadn't gone down the P6 route.

There really should be an Autoshite Understatement of the Year award.

I try not to believe everything I read on the internet; mostly because - when it comes to cars - 99% of it is regurgitated Clarkson.  However, the first time I hammered my 240 into a 90 degree turn I left my intestines behind and vomited into the doorbin.

Lovely old hectors, but my God.  Wallowy™

change the wheels and tyres to low profile , it will handle a lot better !

and check the vac hose to the brake servo , they can collapse when hot and make the brakes fail ...

240GLTs were a bit firmer & great fun on loose surfaced tracks.

I got rather* drunk on Whisky on Saturday night and woke up in a similar manner on Sunday.

Which resulted in me owning a Mercedes W203 saloon.

It also has issues and some will indeed be ignored.

Some craic being a twat eh!!

Agreed about the wallowing! My old big bumper 244 was the same. But...

I liked it. I love American car handling though and that’s all about wallowing and bouncing around! There’s nothing worse than a rock hard bone shaking ride on a car imho.

Great purchase btw, looks a lovely old thing.

Well bought! Hope you're making progress with the Stonefield. It was gearbox problems wasn't it?

How have we got all this way down the page without more pics of the 240?  Come on man, we want to perv over the velour interior!  As yet we don't even know whether it has a proper gearbox or makes you do the work!

The majority of 240s seem to have been Andrew Sachs from what I've seen.  The Douglas Baders of this world tended to favour the 740/60.
