Whole site has been a bit unstable for the last half an hour.

I couldn't get in at all, I was just getting an error page. It gave me the jitters thinking I might have to do some work today!

What's a reasonable amount of time to second offer the Oldsmobile? Winning bidder hasn't replied in hours and hours now...and the advert mentioned a tight turnaround necessary.

You have to cancel the original transaction before you can make a second chance offer. To do that, you have to wait 2 days and then open a case with Ebay.

What's the difference between a slam lock and a push lock for a hatchback boot?

The slam lock was fitted to early Mark 3 Escorts in buttery base spec, while the higher trim levels got a push lock.

I think slam locks need the key to open, push locks can be left unlocked & just have the button pushed.

Need to install the new (used but better) wiper linkage into shitey, old one had some sort of dried up black plasticine type goop on it plus old perished gaskets which I dont think were paper?

the replacement has nothing and you cant buy them anymore :(

Looking for Ideas to keep water ingress from entering around the spindles?

Been looking at Sikaflex but I hear it sets up very quickly and the linkage is a bugger to get in and I need working time..............................

Any advice would be great guys :)

sikaflex /pu sealer isnt that quick you could use it but id say its wrong for the job

would this be your dried up plastacine?

well pu sealer is kinda permanent...so id make up some inner tube gaskets and go with the ebay stuff incase it needs to come apart

Posted

Not sure ill post a pic up later ;)

Seems to be a mix theres plasticine style stuff filling up the casting voids and then a rubber sealer too and inbetween gaskets that appear to be made out of something similar?

Plasticine stuff will be dumdum body putty that you use for landrover windows etc, it's a non setting mastic like a car version of putty and very handy.

You could cut new gaskets from thin rubber?

What are these windscreen chip repair kits like? Do they work and more importantly will it stop the screen from cracking over winter?

Posted

yeah id go with that

windscreen kits ..depends on damage ive done some and theyre very good , others not good at all , chips dont just crack over winter chances are it will stay as it is

I've used a "Laser" branded kit which was about a fiver on Ebay.

It did improve the chips, but they won't disappear if they are substantial ones. Hopefully the resin strengthens the chip, certainly none of mine turned into cracks afterwards.

Is there anywhere I can get rubber gasket from dodgerover im guessing eBay too?

Tyre inner tube, a mountain bike one should be big enough.

Provided they fill the crack properly it'll stop it getting worse as the normal reason they expand in winter is water gets in them, freezes & expands pushing the glass apart.

Any idea of where to find the casting number on a rover m series head?

Would this be it?

Where would I be able to get an old font number plate made up without going through the normal ‘send v5 and proof of ID’ channels?

I've previously used Jersey-based "A1ShowPlates", they're expensive but the plates were well made and arrived very quickly.

Dum Dum is no longer made but there are substitutes which you can find if you type Dum Dum into the eBay search box.

I bought some 'wrap tape + wire', for the puttata puttata hole in the rear pipe.

Arrived today... Watched a UToob where a guy uses the same stuff... It is a red plastic tape with a lattice of sticky goo between the double tape.

Instructions are 'remove tape from sticky-icky, wrap & wire up tightly'

Am I correct to think they mean 'tear back EITHER of the tape ends' - leaving ONE piece of tape with sticky-icky now exposed to wrap over/round back onto itself.

To be fair, the UToob guy does that and it goes a burnt black colour and looks totally shite... but apparently stops the blow :/

I managed to stop the Cowley wiper spindles from leaking with some thick rubber washers from the motor factors....If they had been shaped instead of nicely round and easy I might have tried some of that nitrile rubber repair material you can get for wetsuits etc...

Would any Vauxhall lickers like to hazard a guess at the shade of red this Astra is painted?

I need to buy a rattle can the right colour after my daughter cycled into it. I'm fairly sure that most of the scratches were there before but the owner was keen on it being fixed even if the colour match might not be perfect.

Pink?

Seriously I'd ask the owner to check under the bonnet for a paint code, it won't be your fault when it doesn't match then.

The official Vauxhall name is 'pre-pogweasel'.

We looked under the bonnet and in all the door shuts but couldn't find a paint code,  I did take a pic of the VIN number.

It looks pinker in the photo but is bright red in reality,  I imagine that there was only one bright red on the colour chart at the time.

The other silly question is where should I get the paint?  I told her I would go to the local factors on Monday but presumably I can find something better and cheaper online.  Its not a complete waste of funds as it is a similar enough red to paint the rusty arches on the 214.

Romart, Lye.

They will deliver to my place. They may be able find the code from the reg number.

I think I asked this before, but I forgot the answer so apologies.

All my moderns seem to wear the front tyres on the inside edge.

Are they too much toed in or toed out?

What cars and what suspension mods (if any)?

Could anyone who has bought a car privately in France talk me though the process. Do I literally turn up with cash and come away with the car and the Carte Gris or is it more involved than that?

Thank you all.
