Just been to Ford to get core plugs and they've supplied the knock in type rather than screw in ones - are they interchangeable or have I got the wrong part?

Go to the forum you want them to stop from. Do a long press then choose push settings and you can disable them

Miss Moog has seen a merc 230slk she quite fancies.

The boot won't open on it and dealer thinks it isn't a major job. How hard are they to fix?

Also had an mot fail a year ago on fractured sub frame which then was retested and passed. Is it something that is likely to rear its head again?

Posted

I would say it could be a difficult job in respect of it might involve damaging expensive trim to get the boot open. If it was simple why hasn't he done it?

Posted

"Boot won't open" might be something to do with the hydraulic roof fold and hide mechanism. Folding system might have gone mad and bent itself, jammed boot lid.......

She probably doesn't want that one.

Roof works fine, we had it up and down repeatedly. (one for the double entrendre threads)

I think that is sounds like pain in the arse, and was looking for backup!

Missis has a grande punto and it's great little car . Slower than Moses dog with the 1.2 8v fire but otherwise it's nice to drive and economical / practical too

I found the 1.2 engines great, really lively, especially in the sort of year 1999 era (Mk2) Puntos.

My stupid question is this:

Why do some cars sort of hold on to their revs a bit after you've come off the throttle? I had an E46 2.5 petrol that was great to drive but when you gunned it and came off the revs it sort of held onto the revs a second before it dropped again, rather than the instant response you get on most cars. The works Nissan Navaro diesel does the same, especially if you're really clogging it then come off the throttle.

I believe it is meant to make for smoother shifts when changing gear. I think some cars automatically blip the throttle for you as well when downshifting.

The Xantia used to not hold onto revs at all with the standard map, really difficult to get smooth gear changes. Now, with the stage 1 map, it holds onto the revs just a tiny bit, and gear changes are soooo much nicer.

I don't like it at all to be honest, it just feels like you're not in complete control in a weird way. The Nissan I can understand to some extent as it very rarely gets thrashed, in fact probably 99% of the time it's doing 20mph.

If you sit in my 1200 Beetle and waggle the gear lever you might suspect at first that it's not even connected to a gearbox, such is the degree of play, but I can perform up shifts that Tiff Needell would be proud of, and the pedal set-up - which everyone seems to hate - is actually perfect for heeling and toeing.

On the other hand, I've been driving a newish Sprinter around all week and haven't managed a single smooth gearchange.

Progress innit.

I think engines are made to hang onto revs for emissions reasons. I had a '73 SaaB 99 that had a little damper thing on the carb that had exactly the same effect. I removed it.

If your Beetle gearchange is that sloppy it probably just needs the rubber linkage coupler replacing. A five minute job through the little hatch under the back seat cushion.

Yup ta bushes go quite often on those . Good earner when I was at Honda ! Used to get 1.4 hrs a side book time and if you couldn't do them both in half an hour you were doing something wrong .

If you can afford it go for genuine bushes cos they fit much easier than pattern parts . Grind a smal chamfer on the bush and don't lube up the outer at all . Small taps with the hammer until they are started otherwise they will rock and pop back out again

Thanks! It's my brother's car, the back end steps out easily and we weren't sure whether to look at the bushes or tyres. K**k F*t had suggested they were starting to deteriorate but not totally fubar.

one for beko

The missus wants an lightweight, probably upright hoover that can cope with pet hair and toddler detritus.

henry is too big and clumsy for hauling up and down the stairs lots and doesn't store neatly in the understair cupboard, so he's been demoted to the garage.

What should we get?

Are orecks of infomercial fame any good?

bought this for my baby momma and she rates it highly. power cord is a little short i think and needs emptying frequently but its only £23

My Astra actually increases the revs as you bring the clutch up when in gear. If you're sat at the lights, dip clutch, put it in first and slowly raise to biting point it goes from 800rpm to 1000rpm just before it bites.

Essentially, in a lot of new stuff, the throttle pedal is merely a suggestion. I bet you don't get WOT unless the computer decides you really deserve it either.

I did find out that the Astra also restarts the engine for you if you stall it. Try and pull off in third, stall, dip clutch, it starts again without touching the key.

Rough cost for a DMF and clutch change on an Insignia Diesel? Any rough ideas?

SOC is your best bet I think, he's in the trade and will know what cost will be.

Don't know about Insignia , but did the Mrs' Gaylander ( 2.2 Mondeo/Peugeot engine) earlier this year and it was about £800. Had quotes of around £1200 from Mr Clutch type places though.

Bill in the history of a 1.9 Vectra I sold last year was £1200 but that was a proper job with new starter, battery, etc etc

Posted

Asking just out of curiosity, started the engine up after replacing the turbot solenoid. It rattled like fuck when you held the clutch down slightly then whenever you backed off the revs at about 1500rpm it clattered from round the top of the gearbox. I've told him it'll probably go for some time like that, he's planning on sacking it off in 6 months so...

I've been looking at buying a shipping container to store our house contents while I build a new house.

Given that a 7.5 box lorry is effectively a container on wheels and about the same price, I'm contemplating buying one. I could do my own removals then park it up on site where it could be moved if in the way. Sell on when finished etc.

Is this going to be an expensive folly? Not so much the initial cost, but insurance and tax? I'll only need it on the road for a week or so initially.

The one on my radar has no mot. '05 euro cargo. Are lorry mots much more of a ball ache than car ones if it's for personal use only? What are the main issues to look for? There are some nice older ones with mot but much further away.

Really dumb question alert:

Could someone please tell me how a head gasket failure affects the coolant temperature sensor to make the temp gauge on the dash keep going up and down?

Sorry for being a stupid moronic fucking idiot...

Posted

Possible oil contamination of the sensor or air pockets moving about in the system
