Is all red/pink antifreeze the same? I've used up all the OAT stuff that came with the car but have a bottle of the old Halfords Advanced stuff in the shed. Is it to mix them?

Yep - OAT can be mixed with OAT no problem, you just never mix OAT with whatever the blue stuff is

So all pink and red stuff is OAT?

Please please help!!

Bought an old jalopi Peugeot 305

It needs a new thermostat.

Went to take of the cover to replace the thermostat and the bloody bolt twisted of.

Then spent the next 30 mins vigorously wire brushing and wd 40 the next three, guess what all this buggers twisted of right at the head and all flush with the thermostat cover!

How's your luck.

Please advise with any removal suggestions as I need this banger to be on the road.

Cheers

....and pray to the god(s) of your choice.  I have snapped extractors in the smaller sizes and ended up having to completely drill out the wreckage, then tap to a slightly larger size. Of course, then the body has to be modded to suit the larger diameter fixings. A 30 minutes job becomes a marathon of cursing.

Lost 2nd gear in my Kangoo van - same as a Mk2 Clio

Possible reasons for this?

It pops straight back into neutral when I lift the clutch back up.

It's french, try retreating & waving a white flag at it

Fucking thing has been off the road for weeks because the clutch pedal link rod wore out - sorted that and took it for a drive and 2nd has gone on holiday

Tempted to fuck it off and lease a new van!

Right! Rover will be on need of tyres for its mot in July, and with the way things are moving at the mo I can't really justify spending too much on them

Options are 4x Kingpin rebounds fitted at £90 all in.....

Or try find a set of part worn branded tyres for a similar price

Choice 3 is a set of alloys/wheels from a similar fitting car

Are new remoulds going to be better than part worns?

Depends on the remoulds & the part-worms I'd say...

Does anyone know reasons why the revs fluctuate on my 406 hdi when idling? It doesn't seem to be affected in normal driving and it doesn't always do it. I would say they vary between 750 to 850. Does something need cleaning?

Could it be electrical equipment kicking in and out?

I don't think so as it goes up, down a bit, up a bit, down a bit more in a slightly erratic way. I could be wrong though!

I had a problem with erratic idle revs on a Rover 800 a few years ago and that turned out to be a faulty thermostat, which was a fairly straightforward repair. In that case though, the problem was more serious as the revs would suddenly shoot up to about 3,500rpm!

I'm sure it's been asked before but I have a DVLA one. Car sold last month, V5 signed 19th, posted 22nd, acknowledgement from DVLA posted out on 28th. Despite this the twats still took the DD for the road tax on the 1st of the following month, - will they automatically refund or do I have to waste a significant part of my life on hold after phoning them?

Posted

DVLA have been pretty quick refunding money they took from me. They were a bit slow when I sold the Merc, so I claimed the money back through DD, which was easy to do through online banking.

Mine isn't as bad as that! I wonder whether it could be the coolant temp sensor? If it's not getting a correct reading maybe it's trying to compensate? Does that make any sense???

Had a problem with refunding vehicle tax recently, just had a cheque in the post, so I would chase them, it's your money and they don't compensate!

Yes, suppose it's a possibility - although a look on the googlez suggests that in your case it could be "a buildup of carbon or fuel varnish deposits in the idle speed control valve..."

Have a look at this: http://www.aa1car.com/library/problem_idle_surge.htm

I've done a bit of googling but didn't find that. Thanks, I'll have a look. Makes sense.

Do I need to to keep the DD open for them to refund or will a refund be by cheque? I've had a cheque refund before but that car was taxed at the PO.

Anyone know if the 1.4 diesel engine you'd find in a Citroen Nemo is any good?

Is that the 1.4 TDCI used in Fords etc ?

Something in the back of my mind says there's something you adjust or set with the cable controls for the gearbox. But I might be thinking of the wrong car.

Edit : HBOL says Renault tool B Vi 1133 plus faffing and measuring on the gear lever.

are the parts the same as vectras  or vectra estates ?  as that is fundamentall what a signum is underneath

Yes but the Haynes book of minimal information on Vectras has several possibilities because I can't work out which bolt it is versus the Haynes description of the part.

Don't they use the ubiquitous 1.3 Fiat diesel? Those vans are more Fiat than PSA.

Interesting - most places say it's a 1.4 but you might be right

It's not a bad engine at all is it?

Nemo should have a DV4TED, which is the Ford/PSA one. There a 1360cc pez as well.

Edited to add. LP is correct, there's a 1.3HDi too.
