I sold a mini on eBay years back. It was around £1900. A guy messaged to say he’d pay £1600 for it, but I’d need to give him a receipt saying the cost was £850. I couldn’t understand his angle. Is it some kind of con? I said no and it ended up selling for £2200

Unless you are buying something totally end of life and you are wanting it for parts or something, I can’t understand why you’d agree a price before viewing it? Could be £2000, agree £1800 then get there and it be totally fucked. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I’d actually ring up, get a feel if the owner was a muppet or not, arrange to see it, have a run round in it etc THEN make an offer, pay up and fuck off.

I agreed the asking price on my V70 purchase before seeing the car.  I figured for 850, I could sell it on (honestly) even if it was fucked and not take a huge loss.  The seller wasn't a dealer, just a private individual and I could see his sales history which was primarily selling specialist maps.  I figured the risk was minimal.

When I went to see the car I commented on how brave he was to sell on eBay.  He noted that he'd had a few nutters sending him 'offers' of 400 and was glad that I didn't mess him around.  After all, a car for under a grand is good going these days and it looked solid in the listing and if nothing else, it was a fun day out.  As it happens, everything that matters on the car (including the air conditioning) works.

I didn't pay until I'd seen it and had the green slip obviously and if it were a dealer (officially or not) or similar I would have played it differently.
