Diesel Engined Road Vehicle

Cheers - what confused me was it seemed to mean both a fuel (it was written on pumps on older petrol stations) and also a vehicle.

Non car related poser:

Why do/can supermarkets and the like charge very low prices for alcohol and frequently run cheap booze promotions, yet nobody ever does the same for tabs?

And what's worse for you - 10 fags a week, or 10 cans of beer?

both depend on your genetic make up

i know of a 90+ year old bloke who smokes 40 a day and is fitter then me

and also a 83 year old man who drinks at least 8 cans a day, and has done for the last 20 years

and yet I read in the news today of an epidemic of liver disease among 30-40 year olds, and loads of people die of lung cancer before they reach 60

as willie nelson said: doctor told me to stop drinking, but i know of more old drinkers than old doctors, so i ll carry on

Given that MK1 Golfs can fetch £££, and Golf convertibles were made with the MK1 shell long after the hatches could you combine a convertible shell with the roof/doors/rear hatch off a rotter...?

When referring to fuel, it specifically means diesel for road use with full duty paid, as opposed to red or marine diesel.

I think it's illegal to run any sort of 'special offer' or similar on tobacco products. They're usually excluded in the small print for things like Tesco Clubcard vouchers and what not.

Ah maybe, seems strange that there is a law against doing it for cigarettes yet not for alcohol.

am a bit disappointed to realise that it doesn't change, you actually have to click to see how much worse/better samey I'm doing.

A question for MOT testers - does a fairly presentable/free of rubbish car stand a better chance of a pass than a filthy bin on wheels?

Doubt it.

depends how bad the car is, if they are unable to get to the belts to test for example or there is so much crap that it could be classed as dangerous, than they could refuse to test it....to be honest some of the cars I get in to work on I have asked for them to be tidied up before I will agree to service them....and even after they have it, I consider them to have more shit in them than my rubbish bin

You'd only be using the front end from the A-pillar forwards, and the lower six inches.... I guess it's technically possible but sounds a lot of work - you'd still somehow need to source a donor Mk1 for the roof, doors, hatch, glass, interior, probably boot floor - just weld that one up instead ;)

I used to drive vans for a small fleet, which often meant taking over a round (and therefore vehicle) at zero notice. Almost every time my first job would be to clean out the cab, which would take at least half an hour. Rarely was one fit for human habitation... and we were carrying fresh produce! I despair of people sometimes.

Only a matter of time (and tbh that's probably a good thing)

Not in the slightest. An Excess of chip wrappers/puke/boot scrapings can earn a refusal to test...not a good call for a family vehicle if it's the interior... cue red faced MILF in the reception area.... At least with a clean car all round we can actually find the components to test.

Yes, but the domestic energy-saving bulbs are rated at a much lower wattage than conventional ones (18W 'energy-saving' is designed to replace 110W incandescent).

Posted

Well, given that it's still a 55W halogen bulb the only way it can use "less energy" is by warming up faster than a standard H1. Can't really see how this equates to 20% (they do say "up to") and I'm also rather sceptical about seeing a measurable fuel saving by fitting them.

Posted

To be fair to them, their fuel-saving claim is so ridiculously tiny that nobody in their right mind would take it into account.

(from http://www.regalautobulbs.co.uk/product ... ion-h4.php ) "Philips claim the EcoVision Energy Efficient bulbs will give you significant energy and fuel savings. Over their lifetime, by consuming less energy, a pair of EcoVision lamps can save you around 14 litres of fuel, which is the equivalent to £17.50 GBP or over 124 miles."

14 litres in, what, 35,000 miles of night/bad weather driving?

Mine changes. (By quite a bit on account of I rarely actually brim the tank.) Maybe it just takes a while to 'refresh' or summert.

Does cherry smell different to 'proper' diesel? I swear to God I can smell the difference but don't know if it's just my imagination or pot luck.

Posted

Kerosene has a different smell to it so if the cherry in question has come out of a heating oil tank it could be tainted.

Yes it does. It's got a sweeter, heavier, 'greasier' sort of smell to it. FWIW, my cousin did a stint on the Road Fuel Testing team, when he worked for the revenue, and said more or less the same, so I know we're not alone here!

Help required to solve pub "discussion" please......

Before OMGSNOWKAOS, was discussing this one in the pub....on snow, is it better to let a bit of air out of your tyres, thus creating an increased contact patch, or to add a few psi, so the tyre will cut through the surface snow.....

Not going to say which side I took at this point..... :D

Posted

I always let some air out, and drive slowly/smoothly in as high a gear as possible. This is what the "AA book of the car" told me to do.

Posted

It is usually deep snow, that's about the only time I have to bother.

Is there a website that lists the statistics of 15 year old cars?

I really need to know the tank capacity of my 405 estate.

70 litres.

Google has the answer.
