saucedoctor Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I should know this, however: is it OK to use black RTV to stick a tailgate seal/rubber to the body? Cheers.
Luckythirteen Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 MM5 - same problem a mate and I had. Disco + horsebox + 2 horses = ? Probably not legal anyway on licences gained in 2012!Had I hooked the horsebox onto a tractor, all fine. Or a little single axle skipper onto the Disco. On the other hand, it's a bodyshell you're shifting? Shouldn't weigh too much should it? With a ton and a half of car to tow it, that should be within limits. SD - you can fix anything with RTV. In fact, you can make things with RTV. Door seals, tyres... Minimad5 1
barrett Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Stupid forum based question: somebody posted in a spotting thread the other day an absolutely lovely Oily Rag Alvis woodie. I wanted to show it to somebody today but could not find the ruddy thing. Anybody able to point me in the right direction?
Wilko220 Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Another stupid forum question: What, in AS jargon, is an ELV? Seen it in two threads today and am completely stumped.
meshking Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 What is RTV? Sounds right up my street, the channel for the door rubber on my 2cv has long since rusted away and I'd like to stick the rubber on rather than weld a new channel (which I will do at some point, just not now)
steve_earwig Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I was too late Googling ELV but... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTV_silicone meshking 1
TimothyClaypole Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 RTV is for making molds with. I tried some on a strip as sound deadening on some metal doors on my laser and it peeled straight off even after using Araldite etc. It won't stick only to itself.

Lets in a cold draught and too stingy to replace the whole seal just for that.
willswitchengage Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 We use it extensively as work. Dow Corning make dozens of varieties but essentially it's a bathroom sealant. It's safe and inert and bonds to basically anything. Use it. Try one of the Xiameter branded varieties.
Station Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Does anyone know of French car wiring?More specifically XM wiring? I've lost windows, heater, windscreen wipers, all interior lighting and the battery light is on.
bub2006 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Battery voltage low so running minimal electrics? Shot alternator?
mat_the_cat Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 It seems like a failure of most (all?) ignition switched circuits, so the common point is the ignition switch itself or a relay it switches. For the battery light to be on with the engine running, assuming the alternator is charging it suggests a failure of the ignition switched supply to the other side of the bulb. (Normally when you're running it has a nominal 12 V on one side from the alternator, and battery voltage on the other via the ignition switch - no voltage across it therefore no current flows and it does not light. You lose either voltage and there is now 12 V across it, so it lights). I doubt it's a common fuse for the whole lot but may be a heavy duty fuse under the bonnet perhaps - I've no specific XM knowledge I'm afraid. I can't see a brief short being able to melt wires enough to knock out that many circuits. steve_earwig 1

Anyways, good luck to you both in sorting the respective issues! alf892 1

Station Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Will do Mark.!All these items run off fuse 9.Checked wiring diagrams, it looks like ignition switch wire to this fuse has either burnt out or the earth has gone (less likely).
Sigmund Fraud Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Don't XMs have a massive earthing block thingy in the engine bay that becomes more crusty than the Titanic after a few years ? Perhaps that's one more thing to check.
jonathan_dyane Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 On one of my MZ motorcycles I'm currently running with a sealed 12 volt battery out of a home alarm. Will this prove an acceptable solution or will the battery protest at dealing with the mighty MZ alternator which I suspect provides rather more charging potential than the modest float charge the battery is designed for cause the battery to explode all over my left leg?
twosmoke300 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I've used them in the past on various bikes with no problems
mat_the_cat Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Will this prove an acceptable solution? You should be fine. Typical maximum charging rate for a SLA is usually given as a third of the capacity (i.e. for an 18 Ah battery a max. of 6 amps) but they can take higher rates than this (assuming they are the valve regulated type) so long as they are not overcharged. And when you're charging a battery, the internal resistance increases the closer you get to fully charged, so you'd need a higher voltage than the alternator output to overcharge it. Or in other words yes.
Alan_Green Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 What is going on with my modern?1.6HDi Peugeot Partner Origin 600 van. 47,000 miles. Oil and filter changed every 12K. New turbo in Sept 2013 at a cost of £1,128 (paid by last company owner).Turbo has blown again today - just 15 months later.Been quoted £1,000 for new turbo/pipes/flush by local garage (SE prices). 2 Questions:Is £1,000 reasonable? Should I get rid once repaired?
Chas4545 Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Peugeot turbo failure second time , perhaps partially blocked oil feed pipe was not replaced first time, or lots of start stop driving without letting turbo spool down before switching off. All bollox of course, what do i know. Alan_Green 1
skattrd Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I'd say get a recon turbo and swap it yourself.... Then flog the thing. If it cost £1100 last time, and you've been quoted £1000 this time I'd say that's probably around the going rate.If you are going to get someone to do the work ask if they can use a recon turbo or get yours rebuilt, which would save a few quid. worldofceri Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Towing...Remember that for licensing purposes it's the plated weight of the trailer that counts not the actual weight of the trailer and it's load. Most plant trailers or car trailers will be plated at 2500kg or even 3500kg. Since this figure must be less than the kerb weight of the tow vehicle they're not legal on a B licence.
worldofceri Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Worth noting that you Mum/Dad/Gran probably has B+E by 'grandfather' rights. Stick on L-plates and get them to ride with you you can tow whatever you like. Rocket88 and tooSavvy 2
Minimad5 Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 ^How could that be legal ?As wouldn't it be me (driver) who requires the entitlement ?
skattrd Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Yes, but you would have L plates fitted and a qualified driver as an instructor with you I think ...
