What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Setting the valve clearances on the Merc earlier I deduced that turning the engine over via the alternator pulley was by far the easiest... getting to the crank pulley from an angle where I can also see the valve gear is a pain, and the power steering pulley is no good as the fan shroud is in the way.  However I needed to nip the belt up a bit to stop it slipping (belt was way too loose anyway).

I'm used to this being a bit of a faff, involving trying to lever against something to get the right tension on the belt while also doing up the retaining bolts.  Saab are one of the exceptions as they have a leadscrew based adjuster.  Likewise on the Jag... though that loses twice as many points for having the most stupidly fine thread on it and burying the adjusters for two of the belts in totally invisible locations.

Finding this arrangement on the Merc was a massively pleasant surprise.

Such a simple idea, but it means that adjusting the belt takes literally about two minutes.  Some designer actually put thought into that design with regards to how it would actually be used after the car left the showroom.

Yes those belts are shot, exposure to oil from a major leak from the rocker cover has seen to that, I'm waiting on the arrival of replacements, they'll be changed once those turn up.

Mine are Zs, I'm assuming they go somewhere when you're displeased.

Pretty sure a bypass of the safety switch isn't beyond you @jakebullet

I know someone who did that.

Then managed to remove most of the skin from his thumb.

Woke up in a good mood. Gave my gran a lift to the woods so she can pick mushrooms. It's one of her favourite things to do.

Tall suspension came in handy. :D

Where it died almost instantly twice as he started it on the 3rd time he revved it up and it kept running, sounding like a fucked bag of spanners! Makes my hdi sound like a sewing machine... Nice* puff of shite out the exhaust too...

They really put some faith in that bit of string to not snap and send a subsonic missile spearing directly into their bollocks, don't they?

My brother used fly combat wings and other stuff as a kid 60's to mid 70's. He was doing a display at the school Fete and I ran and crawled out to him, I was probably 4 or 5 at the time and he went mad when I reached him as I ruined his routine! 🙈

The Doppler effect on that second one is hilarious.

I’ve been in the UK for two months and then had to quarantine back here in UAE for a week. I had to go for a PCR this morning so went down to the basement with my boost pack expecting the truck to be dead as a doornail (the heat kills all batteries if they’re not used regularly, and they don’t last more than a couple of years generally speaking)

Started on the button, no boost required! Result.

GCSE results for the young ' un today. Decent spread of grades and a place on the motor mechanics course at the local college. Sure I can find something to practice on. Here's hoping they do welding.

I like his stuff, he seems to have an inexhaustible supply of field finds to revive.  I didn't even know they made a 4x4 Escort in any spec, does seem odd - although given the state of it and the noises it was making, it might need a bit of work before it sees the road again.

Never knew Ford made a Boggo MK5 Escrot 4x4!

I knew there was an RS2000 4x4 variant, not sure what the drive train was from though, doubt it was from the Cossie which obviously had a Sierra floorpan. Forgotten how smooth and refined those old engines sounded!
