What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Went out this morning to get two new tyres fitted to my ageing Golf.  The tyre place is called 'Invicta Tyres' in Wincheap, Canterbury.  Properly old-school.  I got there just after opening which avoided the usual scrum on the road outside of people trying to push into the queue.

I don't think the workshop has been cleaned since 1978.  My partner's Dad has been using them for at least twenty years and I've been using them since we moved here.  Just a good, old-fashioned place that does one thing and does it incredibly well.

Treated the Golf to a quick jet wash at Morrisons afterwards as it had got to the point that even I was embarrassed about the algae that's growing on the roof...

Ooh, that's an early one!  I still reckon these make just about the best first car of anything on the road.

When I was young my Granddad worked as a tyre salesman. I used to go to his work sometimes. The overwhelming smell of new tyres. Look at those photos I can just smell them now. It was located in Billet Lane Hornchurch. street view of  2008 still shows that Universal tyres was operating there.

I trust you went for the Firemax FM601s?  They look like a quality tyre.

Falkens as ever.  One of the best things about the car is that I can get several mid-range tyres for the cost of a single mid-range tyre for a modern with silly wheels...

I thought the same, I could smell that picture.

My dad worked at Kennings in the 60's & 70's, as a kid I used to sometimes go with him on weekend callouts, they had the coal board contract, so we had to go into the wonderful smelling tyre warehouse, load the huge tyres with a hiab onto the back of the flat bed truck and off to some Derbyshire pit. Wonderful times.

Three of my grandkids have them.  There are loads of them round here, five of my neighbours drive them.

This Christmas card, received from a neighbour. I think it's supposed to depict Santa doing a snow angel, but to me it just looks like he's been run over.

81k miles and loads of mot. Asking price was £795 and I got it for £700. It's also very clean but the sills are starting to scab though tadts. I'll smother them with underseal over the holidays.

Only £600 to insure! They wanted a grand for splitpins audi cab for me.

This corner is on my job list to scrape clean as it's covered in mud. Have deemed it low priority  as been having great fun hand braking around it.

Lass next door has a 7 year old hoover obsessed autistic son

was chatting to her today and she mentioned about it all

so I said I’ll be back in a minute

so I’ve given him this

IMG_6412.jpeg.70be2d404119fe4e82aee06636ff981d.jpeg

he was so happy and excited about it

worth so much more than any money I could have got for it and it’s really made me feel happy

new wiper blades today

this car had brand new Bosch ones fitted upon purchase

I was never impressed by the wiping performance, always juddery and smeary and I presumed it was the wiper arms weren’t that strongly sprung anymore

What transpired to happen was absolutely silent, smooth wiping with these blades, it’s perfect

Plus I managed to get all 3 for £13.50

IMG_6482.png.7a48132375b313e55ab8428f197f3582.png

which is much much much cheaper than I’ve been able to find blades online

The TUI advert always makes me smile - especially the "plop" when the elf somersaults into the pool.

Managed to leave my work keys at home yesterday, was already signed on for my shift so it was looking like a long shift with no brew to be had.

Luckily I had a pair of molegrips in the car, which showed me just how feeble the padlock on my locker is at work, under a minute to convince it open.

Why is this a grin?  Well during the search of the car for the missing keys, I did manage to find the service book for the Peugeot so it now has a sparkling partial service history as well as a new timing belt.  Proper clean up and advert to follow in the new year.

I managed to persuade my son to ‘drive’ a car for the first time at the weekend. He’s usually nervous to be out of his car seat in the car (which isn’t a bad thing), but whilst we were up the stables on Saturday he decided that he was happy to sit on my lap and steer whilst we went along the private farm tracks at my parent’s house.

He was properly excited once we started moving and realised that turning the wheel steered the car - only had to correct him a couple of times to keep us out of the post and rail 😂

It’ll be nice to be able to tell him that the first thing he ‘drove’ was a Citroen XM at the age of two 🤣

Im looking forward to when he’s a bit bigger and can start doing the gears and pedals. I have really happy memories of driving an old 4x4 round my aunts land when I stayed with her in the holidays. I’m hoping he can make even better memories - after all, we’ve got enough shite to drive round in up at the stables!

The new boss has let us finish at 12.30 today instead of the planned 4.30 and she  has also negotiated with head office to give us 2nd Jan off as it's a public holiday in Scotland. (Company is England based).

Went out for a spoons breakfast this morning

large breakfast £5.99 I believe it was with a drink

actually very enjoyable, not award winning but for the money and with a drink I couldn’t complain at all

i don’t particularly understand the hatred of spoons, or maybe my local one is a very good one?

The owner is a knob. They're an example of big capitalism. Tories.

The food and drink is decent and very cheap. The 'Spoons experience is pretty universal so you know what you're getting more or less at every location.

A mouse infestation at Old Trafford.

Will the new owner charge extra for the mouse shit? Will we see official MUFC mouse shit in the club shop?
