Right then - any Allegro experts out there ???? I've bought a brown Allegro As reported earlier in news 24) blind and hopefully will be collecting very soon.

 

The story is that it's been with the last owner 11 years and it's now showing 50k. in 2008 it had a load of work done including work to the gearbox (new 5th gear and circlip is all it states on the invoice).

Story is that he set off from a junction and heard a loud bang and lost drive. On the tow home he noticed that the speedo was not working. It's been sat in his garage ever since. It's still MOT'd and judging by pics is a very tidy motor indeed. (It's an E series 1500) The clutch works fine/you can select any gear but no drive whatsoever.

 

So anyone have any ideas? anyone know of a good mechanic in the Yorkshire area (i'm too busy to do this myself) does anyone have a spare gearbox? any help greatly appreciated.

Yes. Ed at Little Garage Classics in Halifax is a BMC/BL specialist and I'm sure he'd be able to help. O788O 862552

 

It's possible that the driveshaft has snapped of course.

I'd go for driveshaft too.  Perhaps unseated rather than snapped, especially if a hub nut hasn't been tightened up.

My SD1's been taken to Viking Vehicle Services in York ever since it needed previous mechanics' good* work undoing. The proprietor's a bit of a nutcase but he knows his stuff, particularly if it's old and British.

Not much, but made up some  work pieces to weld into the front mounts. SHould see it through to lifes end

I did think driveshafts myself to be honest - on a plus note I've just found another brown Allegro that is being broken up and no ones touched it yet. It's not been advertised so I have first refusal on the bits - seeing it next Thursday.

This evening I fitted a new lift pump to the Discovery. It needed a jump off the work van to get going but ran really sweetly so I took it for a test drive up the hill.

 

 

At this point it broke down, fortunately it fired back up for long enough to climb back up into the carpark and bimble down the hill to the house I'm doing up. After sitting there for half an hour it was running fine so maybe Ms C will make it back from her mission to Aldi?

Hmm, that's definitely my car. Same pics as when I bought it so hopefully it's just not been cancelled.

Don't forget only the E-series engined Allegros are five speed gearboxes. You probably know that, but just in case.

 

I was once following a Maxi (same powertrain as your Allegro) up the ramp in a carpark when it stopped and began to roll back, with much revving noise.

I could see the problem because it had no hubcap on the front O/S wheel.

When the clutch was let in, the driveshaft nut rotated, but the wheel didn't: hub / driveshaft splines had failed.

 

Hope your problem is as easy to fix.

Thanks for the advice and empathy chaps, I'll have a proper fettle when I next get a couple of days at home.

 

The exhaust is an easy fix, it just needs a clamp or something at the tailpipe end - the rubber hanger is a bit knackered and lets it swing too much so it fouls the towbar beam when it's spluttering. It's fine in normal running.

It's just the price we pay for pissing around with old cars. I've literally got no time for tinkering with more than one at a time anymore so I'll be selling my p6 when I sort out the cooling problem.  I was going to sell the cortina but I've put so much time into it I think it'd be a shame not to keep it for the summer at least.

Buy the entire front end of the car if its not already rusted out, because if yours isn't already held together by no more than a mixture of paint, underseal and dead flies it soon will be....going to pick up a new front end for mine on Saturday

I am in Tunbridge Wells. On the way, I saw an old 'new' Skoda.

 

That's Skoda_Norman's current hack. It's quite a shed, but rare to see such an early 'new' Octavia.

 

Had a great drive down in the XM, though as I got to Kent, I started to have gear selection issues. Feels like the clutch is dragging. Also, the bloody windscreen washers on my side have packed up again. Shame you have to remove the sodding scuttle panel to get the things out. I think they need removing and properly cleaning out.

 

On the plus side, the previous tank of fuel netted a 49.5mpg average. Bargetastic!

99% of other R56 Binis I see out on the roads are constantly driving round with the sidelights on, or whatever light it is that's in the top half of the bumper mounted foglight unit on R56s. Basically working as daytime running lights.

 

The mother's doesn't have (working) DRLs, and I've worked out why - it's because it's an auto. 07-on Binis have BMW EfficientDynamics, and it's evidently some part of that system that turns on the sidelights.

Because auto boxes have their own ECU - it must do considering it has a button to disable the ESP and a sport switch, you can't run EfficientDynamics (let's face it, boring mode on the auto does the same job, keeping revs low etc), and as such, no DRLs.

Anyone got a 'Nav for sale?

Just download offline maps to your phone (if you have a smartphone).  That's what I did when I went to the US.  Worked well enough.

Do you not have a smartphone? Google maps is great (if you have a data signal) and Sygic is great if you don't have a data signal.

Mo: if you have smartfone try Waze or other phone based satnav.

I used to use Sygic on my android phone and it was gr9. Now on windows I use the inbuilt maps and navigation or Waze.

As an executive gentleman with a budget to match, I bought a tomtom one for a fiver off of gumtree. This is old and small screen by modern standards but the latest maps and OS are readily piratable, where as tomtom would have had my pants down for £30+ for a new map on my old (newer) one.

 

You should be able to get a tomtom one or oneXL for sub 20quid, and I can help you out with getting the maps sorted if you drop me a PM.

I got given a Tom Tom something, years old but it runs pirated maps like a champion, it even has Lane assist etc now too

Probably fine now.

When the lift pump fails you can get airlocks in the fuel line & filter. Takes a while for it all to bleed through.

 

Mind you, if it keeps doing it lift the rear seat & take off the round inspection plate. Chances are the metal pipes out the tank have rusted & it's sucking in air.
