After seeing XBOLLOXs efforts polishing his aircraft carrier I was inspired to use some G3 on my Volvo.

Its had a semi OK blow over at some point and it’s hard to get a decent shine but it does look loads better, I can really picture myself cruising around in it now.  I gave the dusty engine bay a wash and used some “Cherry sheen” on the dash.

Quite rewarding and made me forget about the fuck-ton of welding the body needs. The shiny roof now shows off the dents made by the POs kids walking on it that won’t quite pop out, maybe I need a sink plunger on it.

I've found the washer pump had karked it so after digging around in the garage I found an Allegro item. The Volvo pump is built into the washer reservoir cap and after removing it I found the allegro's mounting holes lined up perfectly with the existing holes in the cap, a couple of rivets and the screen jets were back in business!

Talking of Allegro bits, the TEX wing mirrors appear to be typical BL generic items, obv the wanky bases these use have deformed so one mirror won't stay on and the other is easily knocked off. I find these soon die a death once you start messing with them so I might try and find some proper Volvo ones.

Happened to my Clio after I'd done the pump with the belts. Needed to strip it all back again and double check no coolant got on the brand new belts.

I usually use blue hylomar on all gaskets when I put them on. Pump instructions said not to use anything, so I didn't. The replacement pump I put on (because the bolt heads rounded after I made the mistake of tightening them up more and ended up cutting the brand new pump off instead) sure did have hylomar on the gasket that time. Unsurprisingly no leaks.

Google says I can't use Hylomar on card gaskets, is that what was on the Clio? If so, I'm using some as locating the loose gasket, bolts and pump all whilst reaching down the side of the engine is near impossible.

I should probably have left the old pump alone but I wanted to see if it was corroded or had damaged/missing vanes, causing the overheating and the only way to rule it out was to get it off.

If I'm honest, I've seen another Corsa B that I really like. Its a 5 door which is what my first one was. I always thought I preferred the 3 door but having had both,  this one just evoked a lot of nice memories. It isn't for sale yet but I'm keeping tabs on it and have been chatting to the owner. He brought it to my house when I sold him a Tigra scuttle panel  for it and I really liked it.

Yes. Just don't go too crazy that it could bung up in the water way.

Saying that, I tend to and never had a problem 🤷

Pump will likely mash it up before it bunging up anything. No worse than crystallised coolant jamming up coolant paths.

Went to the Banger Racing at Osdal stadium last night. Really good evening out.

I wasn't sure if I was agreeing with the 3 wheeler race as they're a bit rare now but there were only 4 3 and a half of them racing.

20210814_183848.thumb.jpg.2ac5ebf1c761dc02e18373b929604f8f.jpg

One of the drivers intentionally rolled his car at the end of each race (along with at least 1 unintentional one from of the drivers mid race) . Nowt wrong with a bit of showmanship.

Most of the bangers seemed to be E class and a few Jags and Mondeos. Were surprised not to see more Lex-i but maybe they're harder to steal.

Amazingly I think this Mondeo made it out for the next race. 20210814_192124.thumb.jpg.c8560d9b80f14e787ca315ab5932358e.jpg20210814_200517.thumb.jpg.6a03f8d0c19da9a9b994b0b0e19226bf.jpg

Mini stocks was really fast, I'm used to watching them (in Micras these days) at Angmering which is a much smaller track and with tighter turns. I bet the F1 stock cars are fucking stupid fast round here.

Will definitely go again, great to have something like this near where I live.

As @SiC says. People have a tendency to squeeze it out like toothpaste then it oozes out when you tighten everything up. It then sets and bits can break off and block oil/waterways. But you just use a smear to act as a locator while you line everything up. If everything is accessible and both faces are nice and clean then yes, you probably don't need any but if you're struggling to line everything up like you seem to be then yes I'd use a smear.

But I use Wellseal.

WELLSEAL.jpg.4581f3e4546dde7197df6c3b2928c07a.jpg

It's much thinner, quite runny and gets all over your fingers, my tube certainly doesn't look like that anymore, it has sticky brown stuff all over it. But it never fully sets. You just run a smear round with your finger leave it a few minutes and it sticks like the proverbial. So it's also a great locator when you're trying to line things up on a vertical surface.

You've probably already gone out to buy some Hylomar, in which case no worries but if you haven't yet I can't recommend Wellseal enough.

Yeah that gasket was in perfectly*

All I could get was Granville instant gasket. It says its suitable for waterpumos and other antifreeze type environments so I just got it.

I put a wafer thin and uniform smear on the face of the pump just to help 'stick' the gasket to it and the same again on the other side. No fucking about putting it on this time and it seems to have lined up nicely.

Just waiting on it curing before I refill the coolant

Unless it pishes out its coolant overnight or something, I'd call the Cav fixed.

I took it for a blast up and down the M876 as it was overheating only on long motorway inclines ad 70-75mph, as if the cooling system couldn't keep up. The temperature barely moved off the 90 degree mark the whole way. It was definitely the radiator. The big hole you see here:

20210804_174134.thumb.jpg.c45e117471edfaf6a4db177164260d34.jpg

was actually the bottom flange where the fan mounts but it was so corroded it had snapped off. I ran some water through the old radiator just to see and it came out the bottom port pretty slowly so it was clearly corroded up inside.

MOT is less than a month so I'm glad overall this has been a very inexpensive fix.

Washing the car today and...

...it's okay, I fixed* it.

Welding gas and grinder is arriving this week, so it's typical the arch fell off today.  Passenger side is making a bid for freedom too but still has just enough structure left to keep it on.

Glad to see it back on the road - an ace car that's had plenty good work done by yourself @Jim Bell@Jimbob McGregor

Woohoo

Took the BX's rear wheeltrims off and then used my new timing light to see what the engine was runing at. The manual says 6-10 degrees BTDC. The engine was set at... -1. This means that before I had touched it weeks ago, it was probably 4 degrees ATDC which isn't good at all! Some dizzy twiddling later and it's around 6 or 7 degrees which is a lot better. Idle speed was increased so I adjusted that down as well. Unfortunately I couldn't test drive it, so that'll need to happen after I'm back from holiday.

More Voleing today with some action on the brakes. I jacked the rear up, put it on stands and removed the wheels, hoping to get the calipers off for a good clean up. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the bolts out so I had to settle with removing the pads and giving those a bit of attention. The callipers appear to be reasonably new, the pistons slide in and out nicely and are very shiny, possibly stainless- either way I was pretty pleased as I was expecting them to both be seized and in need of a rebuild.

These have slightly weird double split circuit brakes witch are a total mare to bleed, especially from an empty system. I did my best to get the air out but totallY failed on the first attempt. I think it needs to be pressure bled, I did have a GUNSONS EASY BLEED but I think I binned it after a brake fluid explosion while attempting to bleed the brakes on a Morris Oxford years ago. It’s a job for another day I think.

The handbrake works fine so all that was left was to tidy up the rust on the discs as best I could with a wire brush.

The arches were both full of mud so I took the opportunity to give them a good clean out and hose down.

Before i refitted the wheels and removed the stands I test fitted a slot mag alloy to see how it would look. The tyres are slightly too small but the biggest issue is the wheel touches the backplate and caliper, I think a spacer should fix it but I’m not overly struck on them anyway so may stick with the existing steels, the tyres for these are expensive though. Apparently the previous owner of the slot mag wheels  had them on a Volvo 244 and they fitted fine by all accounts so they should go on one way or another.

The spare wheel wells are in Ok shape, considering they’re prime rot spots for any vehicle that’s remotely 240 related, the drivers side being the worse. The passenger side looking pretty nice.

OBV with the back end in the air I fired it up, stuck it in gear and went for a “drive” It’s the first time I’ve seen the strip speedo in action and it looks amazing!
