It sounds like you're being sensible there, @egg, whatever your personal reasons behind it, hopefully the two cars will find the right owners.

We've been plugging away at the house and finally got to the point we could clear out and clean up the conservatory-sunroom-extension-thingy which had thus far been used as a workroom.  We were going to redo the walls since we didn't like the blotchy paint finish, or the colour that much, so the first job was to clean them down once we'd cleared out the old flooring.  There was more newspaper under the flooring (because of course there was, every room in the house has had this problem), this time dating from 2006 and the walls... well...

202004-Extension05.thumb.jpg.b70291b202c180c15a0bbbaf2e384dd4.jpg

That's not mould (thankfully), it's algae.  The floor is a concrete pad that had a layer of newspaper, then a layer of polythene, and then a layer of lino. and the newspaper was soaked.  Judging by how quickly everything dried out after removing all the flooring we're hoping that it was the combination of bad materials causing a moisture trap rather than anything more serious but wow, I've never seen interior walls covered so uniformly in algae that it looked painted, that's a new one on me.

More work on the Flog today.

Rusty fuel filler this time.

Outside wasn't too bad.

20200427_115150.thumb.jpg.53ee8bbf785621455f898acdcdfbc8c4.jpg

Inside was rusty though,

20200427_115251.thumb.jpg.ba3d8876fb00b5f7f07b663b0bca7222.jpg

Nothing for it but to chop it out carefully.

20200427_125034.thumb.jpg.7c79395d26cd0c67cd15a5bed3154776.jpg

I cut the replacement part oversize,to make it quicker and easier to weld back in.No point pissing about,a lap weld is much stronger.

20200427_143329.thumb.jpg.2f147662059c88d8ce3446c8c1760929.jpg

Welding this in was a pain.

Then it was time to sort the outside.

Carefully marked then cut the rotten bit out.

20200427_153823.thumb.jpg.13fae271e4639a2d2624ac604aa10b61.jpg

A bit of a pain to get the replacement part to fit neatly.

20200427_154312.thumb.jpg.d37344b04fe0db49fbb9144c4081a54e.jpg

Then welded it in slowly, even though I really took my time, the panel still warped a small bit,FFS!

Still it looks decent enough.

20200427_170133.thumb.jpg.d6a4f20313257a1d66f158e7b9212700.jpg

Didnt fully seam the top as i lapped it under the panel, and thats where it warped slightly.

Had to fit two nutserts into this after welding it in as the self rappers holding the fuel flap on decided they didn't want to tighten up anymore.

Wheel arch on the same quarter panel tomorrow.

I'm off for a cuppa.

Since standby mode was initiated by my employer, I have endeavoured to maintain a bouyant mental outlook. As the screw of necessity is paused from propelling your reluctant body into a job you feel less than indifference towards, the diem for personal revolution must surely be carpe’d.

With the fitness routine of Max Cady, a diet that would give Phineus green eyes and a progressive attitude to daytime intoxication, I sensed a renaissance manifesting.

Rebirth completed, an expanse of hours at one’s disposal and a sparklingly irrigated inbox aching for a filling, some tactile relief was called for.

I have found myself strongly drawn towards Ford’s Ka (a damning indictment of confinement) but a lack of storage at my home and all of my tools stuck at work, I had to lateralise my thinking.

And then I happened upon Petrolize’s clearance sale!

Here was the chance to buy into the Ka dream without the associated woes of storage, running costs and the malignance of corrosion.

It turned up today and, upon inspection, my joy dissolved and an order was placed with Bacofoil for an 8’ x 4’ sheet.

I hope you still update your threads @egg your bASe Mondeo is one of my favourite cars on here

Yes, I'll keep the Mondeo thread going. Slowsilver has just re-confirmed the popularity of these fine steeds on here.  Well, confirmed that lots of people have good memories of them, but fewer probably actually want to own one today...

I'll also keep the Mazda one ticking over. Although the poor old Mazda isn't loved by so many! It's no K11.  Although I think Barrett thinks it is an acceptable modern - that's endorsement enough from one of our taste makers!

Just purchased some shares in Aston Martin as there like 58p each at the moment.

Does that entitle me to a go in some of the old stuff, you know, being a shareholder and all that.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

which reminds me of an ex. work colleague, and one of his get rich* quick schemes.

some of you may be old enough to remember Conder Structures? they went under 25 plus years ago.

well he was working there just before they went pop.

he bought something like £1,000 of their shares, at something like a penny each.

they went up to something like 1.5p a share, which was where he was going to bail out.

by the time he went to the bank at dinnertime to sell them, Conders had gone under. and with it, his money.

shares, ok, but remember, the value of your investment may fall as well as rise.

My service parts for both cars arrived yesterday evening. The lot that DHL said they'd delivered a week or so ago. If I was allowed to do a click & collect at ECP I'd have done that, but as I'm not at work I can't.

As it's pouring down outside I was going to service the Suzuki as it's in the garage already, but the rain has got through a tiny gap and the floor is now soaked, so that will have to wait for another day. The cars are so bloody reliable I rarely have much to say about them. Corolla's getting a little top-end ticky so the valve clearances may need sorting out soon. Shims & micrometer job. Joy.

Also getting a parts list from sister-in-law and her other half for me to order for the roffle win Fiesta of delight, I noticed when I dropped it off that it needed an auxiliary belt; that and the cam belt kit with my browser discount coupon searcher works out at around £45 for both.

Hurry up DVLA!

Thats bloody brilliant!

A friend had a late 75 until recently which was fitted with the very same wheels. I thought they really made the car, filled the arches very nicely and just generally suited it down to the ground.

Returned to work today after three weeks' furlough:

It turned out to be a pretty good day, all things considered. It would have been a lot better if it hadn't rained heavily all day, but at least I'm not stuck at home any more.

Not sure what is happening with this now, no movement apparently from the DVLA on removing the plate.

I messaged about another 75 on Gumtree which had just been advertised today. It looked great however the seller deleted my message and didn't reply.

Is it worth asking the guy if you can give him back his plate at a later date?

Crusty wheel arch today.

Just the front half really, the rear of it was sound bar one little bit.

20200428_114238.thumb.jpg.e8b77f536aa1b60c48d48a8f04fb0c16.jpg

Separated the donor parts.

20200428_122813.thumb.jpg.50e211116a11a68f14b34b0aafc4b7f3.jpg

Inner arch was well rusty too.

20200428_125846.thumb.jpg.39ebd23569c1a68e25b8581088eaccde.jpg

Welded up,this took as long as the previous days work to do.

20200428_163810.thumb.jpg.5369b29f8dbc382ce096184e56685baa.jpg

Weld sanded down,

20200428_165741.thumb.jpg.244c47d341ff500ac67c6e0b85e57995.jpg

Test fit of the arch.

20200428_165852.thumb.jpg.4ca84e011d9eb6fc7eab0095cc0eaae7.jpg

Reasonably happy with that, another bit of grot  ticked off the list.

Supposed to be getting rain this evening, so car is now back in the shed.

Drivers side bonnet hinge/top of the A pillar is next, and for that the windscreen needs to come out.

A job for another day.

Prescriptions to pick up and groceries to grab today, so a legally sanctioned trip out.

Of course I picked a sensible, compact vehicle for the trip.

IMG_20200428_174344.thumb.jpg.baf89fcdba557a0bec91a214a8bd2443.jpg

Okay, maybe not...but I'm wanting to make sure everything is getting some exercise reasonably regularly.

Don't really want to take the Jag out in the wet until I've sorted the rust on the nearside front wing and refitted the arch liner to be honest so made sense.

Need to get a fresh set of wipers ordered, these are getting past it now and smearing quite a bit, despite my cleaning the blades a couple of days back.

In today's extracurricular activities:

Replaced Toledo HT leads with Golf ones (swapped as fault finding on the golf).
Refitted battery.
Attempted to start Clio to allow Toledo out.
Uncoupled Toledo battery to jump start Clio.
Moved running Clio out.
Moved Toledo out.
Parked Clio back in.
Got the golf running and parked it in front of Clio.
Rounded up tools.
Searched for axle stand.
No dice.
Used scissor jack to raise Toledo enough to peer under.
Both front and rear exhaust brackets are rotten and need cutting off.
Search for grinder.
No dice.

Close up and go in.

Will order a jack and stands and borrow a grinder from a neighbour

Battery double trouble. Corrolla battery fully charged on Thursday night flat by Sunday , damm . New lion battery from ECP £45 delivered .

I thought I may as well charge the van battery it's been parked for weeks and the charger was unpacked . The battery lives under a cover and I have not looked under it for years . It was a bit of luck really as the just out of guarantee yuasa battery has started to swell/expand/weep acid around the + terminal , dripping onto the battery tray . Sorted the rust on it and sprayed black . Varta silver battery £89.99 + delivery that can wait until I need the van for work again . image.thumb.jpeg.61e27106b6513f39f05c2c87b7924df5.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.7954cd9e99724743468eb3fb6d44154f.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.3d95cb7cafd35d03a1523f0c8c4b3d80.jpeg

I've been fucking around with Not Cars for a change.

Firstly, this:

1218091453_DSC_6231(Copy).thumb.jpg.505ede7f8438672b762708bf110c01dd.jpg

It's a 1973 Hitachi FM radtio/8-track stereo. The cart player wasn't working very well and all of my 8-tracks had fucked pressure pads. Getting into the things is fun*.

94883258_2988133067873456_626655085904003072_n.thumb.jpg.68a5dfc86f75ef4e7e7f8ef9b28a5096.jpg

Low density upholstering foam cut to size and fixed in place with two blobs of adhesive and a layer of tape on top seems to work.

95291710_600489187479301_5727498825208168448_n.thumb.jpg.6155916fed83eea2433851234fcc66ee.jpg

Replaced the belt and oiled some of the moving parts and cleaned/realigned the tape head. The big drivewheel drifts back and forth more than I think it should and the player runs slow, this might be because it's currently running a cassette player belt which is much narrower than the original and might not have the grip to spin such a large wheel. It could also be because the wheel is drifting backwards into the stop and dragging. Can't find a speed adjust screw on the motor so this is as good as it gets for now.

Next up was this 'in car' unit:

94706681_226922745408564_4186739518914691072_n.thumb.jpg.bd0dfa36602526ac5f9821cd29f9f4a3.jpg

This has a broken locating wheel which I'll need to replace somehow... Don't suppose anybody knows where I could acquire a 1cm diameter nylon wheel?

Both really sound exceptionally drive. The in car one also seems to be outputting in mono despite declaring itself to be stereo, not sure if somebody has jerry rigged the outputs as it does seem to be coming through very "hot" if you have the balance control centred.

8-Tracks seem to be universally fiddly and ungrateful things to work on.  I've been really lucky in that my player hasn't needed any attention so far beyond a good clean and the occasional alignment tweak.

What's that big radio hiding under the workbench?  Has a Bush look to it...

So, I think this morning I have concluded that the Rover 75 idea is running out of hope and time.

As often happens, something else fouls up around the home requiring this money to be spent, like a fridge or oven so I would like to get something sooner rather than later. Difficult during current times as well.

I was thinking though, why is it when I have money burning a hole that the AS cars I have missed/dithered over through recent years are not for sale!

I'm thinking:

The red Jag XJ6 N118 MFV

The green E36 BMW Coupe M818MHX

The burgundy Honda Prelude

The Green Lexus LS400 'Mason' (now out of the shiteosphere)

That's quite some foliage growing on your dashboard, do you think you might need to give it a bit of a trim before the next MOT

Can it be solid? There's a few odd bits of nylon knocking about in the spares box, some might be about that diameter. Need to drill a concentric hole in the middle. WCPGW?
