After weeks and weeks of arsing about waiting for the log book for the Vespa, I got it last night. Had already insured it, so taxed it and couldn't wait to get out for a blast. It ran out of juice, so I lobbed some in from a can, then went to the petrol station. Bit of a bastard to start again, so twiddled with the fuel tap and off it went. Mile and a half up the road, giving it some beans and it conked to a stop. Steadfastly refused to start, went to open the tool box door to see if there was any spares in there (,i.e plug and spanner), forgot it was a different lock and promptly broke the only ignition key in the tool box door lock!

Luckily it wasn't far from home and another scooter rider with a van kindly offered me a lift, but I pushed it anyhow

Slurped up some crust/shit from the bottom of the tank when it ran out of fuel and bunged up the main jet?

That ET2 is indeed hanging, well bought.

I still harbour memories from 20 years ago of being scared shitless on the back of djimbob's lovely deep metallic red kettle ?

Another impromptu Scotoshite meet at the Unit - good to see Mr Fowler, Davehedgehog31 , Jaypee and Dome.

Mr Fowler attended to a mildly recalcitrant alternator belt on his 740, achieving silence where once there was squeal.

We also made a discovery of fire:

This wee burner did a grand job

All in all a grand night oot :)

I remember when I was on work experience I was given temporary paper overalls for the week I was there. I warmed myself in front of the red diesel space heater before starting and when I looked down the overalls had been transformed into shorts with the cinders floating around the shop behind me.

Just taken my mate to view a car and the vendor turned out to be a really really arrogant bloke with a huge chip on his shoulder. Although we chiselled a bit off the 'firm' price (he hadn't said it was firm before we got there) I'd have not taken the fucking thing for free.

Thought I'd make a start on the Discovery clutch today. When I bought it the previous owner told me his mate fitted a new clutch six months earlier.Looking at the bodges to the structure I just shrugged. How it got through an MoT  I never knew. The rear seatbelt prescribed area was repaired with a bit of tin and some No-nails (which I peeled off when looking at it) and behind the plastic trim the sills consisted of tin, black mastic and pop rivets. Both inner and outer.

I thought if he had done the clutch I wonder what bodges I will find.I found to select diff lock you have to crawl underneath and move a copper tube that is rammed onto the lever when I first got the car so early indications were Mr Bodger had something to do with the gearbox.

The centre console isn't screwed down. The screws are there and so are the fixings but none are screwed together. With this removed and the top part of the gear lever off I removed the sound deadening to find the next bodge. There is a rubber seal across the tunnel held in place with 12 pop rivets.Mr Bodger decided drilling through all those rivets is too much work so he has sliced through the seal front to back.Yeah if he had removed the seal maybe he would have seen what was happening to the diff lock lever when putting the gearbox back in. I haven'tgot any further yet as I need to move the car in and out of the workshop. The parts won't be delivered until Friday anyway. Yes I have ordered a heavy duty clutch fork before you ask.Wonder what else I will find.

Mazda passed its MOT with no advisories today, so I just need to tidy up the bodywork when the weather allows it and I will be all set for the next year  ☺

Opening the FoD for camping during FoTU is no use this year and getting your Free breakfast at the Silvers isn't going to work either, so I am thinking we should find another event local to FoD (Buckingham) as a focus for opening the field for camping on a different date.

Any ideas?

^^^ This.
As you say, FoD camping and Silvers' Service Breakfast Club on FotU weekend won't work this year due to new FotU location being about 80 miles away.
Like the idea of combining a FoD camping weekend with a local event though.
What about either Tingewick or Yardley Gobion fete. Can't see any published dates for 2020 yet but Quicksilver & I went to both last year and they were very enjoyable. Not far away, large turnout of a good variety of cars, nice informal atmosphere, free entry and no need to book in advance. Also other fetey type stuff for OHs and kids.

Started  again after a while, let it tick over then revved the knackers off it.  Seemed to work, so it went to our valeting department for the screen to be washed.

Next up a successful 8-10 mile ride, didn't try flat out on top but does an indicated 50mph without any drama.  Think problem probs due to it running out of fuel recently, probably dragged a bit of shit through.

Tick over slightly higher than ideal so will try and adjust that, then get the garage to do new inner and outer cables so I know they're right.

Really enjoyed that little run out, quite different to the Lambretta to ride.

I just about fell out of my chair there at that price...then spotted the date.  Oh.

Probably still not bad, they'd started to climb by that point.  I sadly sold my last one when the values really were rock bottom in 2004-5.

Yet another mini-shite meet this week, this time at a remote location in Fife to drop off my Clio to a friend of our dome and 320T who loves* working on them.

320T, jaypee, dome and I mostly slabbered over this '62 Galaxie 500.

My Clio needs a new subframe and bottom arms.

When our friend inspected it he asked where the car had been living (Staxigoe near Wick to be precise) as it was really rusty.

Anyway, the replacement items are good so it will help the car live on. I think I have decided Clios are not for me though......

Many thanks to our 320T for venturing out on a cold and blowy evening to give me a lift back - it was quite far.

I have a 'pink shrimp' on my dashboard. Dreaded pixels going. Boo hiss

Finally got round to ordering a small Pela-type suction pump. Going to empty the CX expansion tank so I can fish out the, er, object that accidentally fell into it a few weeks back....

I have almost been ashamed to admit this but...

some time ago I had a longing for a wood dashboard. I ordered and paid for one (£100) which never came so requested money back which did, amazingly! So I ordered another one from CARiD in Canada or the US which looked right and was only $90. But, by the time postage was taken into account, it was £130 and then it got caught for customs which was another £30. But still, gonna be here soon...

And so it was, five tiny pieces of tat. Best of all, not for my car. Nothing like the fit of any part. I requested a refund that was in November! Just had a notice to send them pictures of the item destroyed and they will process a refund. I have sent them pictures so will see if I get anything back. What a fanny about and what a fanny I am for buying such utter crap. I have decided that the interior is fine the way Mercedes made it (apart from the 'pink shrimp').

Is that a Clarke propane based unit? I'm considering one for whatever garage I get when I eventually move. Does it cause a lot of condensation on stuff around it?

The video got me reminiscing- we first did a circuit of the flat track, which was like something out of the Ben hur chariot race ( then read the instructions about no overtaking). Then we lined up to go round the banked track. I was near the front and followed the camera car which was a mehari.  I was also giving a lift to a Canadian 2cver who I’d just met thumbing for a lift on the campsite. Set off at a fair lick ( as you do when 1000 other cars are chasing you). Got to 65 and couldn’t seem to get any more out of the car- we were half way up the banking at this point, and looking out of the passenger roof side you could see the concrete track. Then I realised that I hadn’t changed gear and was still in third! Changed up to fourth coming down from the first corner and accelerated to past 70 passing the camera car and others. It was accelerating well past the stop limit on the speedo so think it was over 80.

then we did the trip into Paris. 4000 or so 2cvs in convoy.

The poster from the event had been on the wall at work ever since. Nothing will ever top the experience.

Will a 2CV really do 65 in third?  I've obviously been short-shifting then...

finally got an answer for you! LOL :)

Ha! It did melt the gunk out of the ignition coil mind you!  55 is the usual recommended limit for 3rd gear.

New rear wiper arm and blade on the bird's Clio. Only take 3 years to get round to fixing it.

£8 for the parts, 1 X 13mm nut and 3 mins to fit (most of the time was spent watching the spindle to work out what side to mount the arm on..)

Bird is delighted.

C15  booked in for MOT next week. One or two little jobs to do first but I'm  hoping it passes without too much bother as it's still my only working vehicle.

Might have to buy something else purely as backup you understand.
