Well photo-shoot attempt 2 went well - amazingly! Car had a real try out as well: had to go up and down a hill about a dozen times for 'action' shots and then over to another place for 'static' shots. Only problem, it was solid traffic the whole way! 24.5 degrees showing and stop start traffic, car didn't get hot or bothered (which allayed my fear that yesterdays ftp may have damaged another head gasket) and actually performed spot-on! Pictures taken and off we jolly well went for a trundle round, which was most enjoyable to be honest.

I am getting to like this car quite a bit; even yesterdays snafu hasn't dented my faith in it, I consider it lucky as I wasn't alone to get bored for once :)

I finally visited the hovercraft museum, it's bloody ace!  I've gone from 'meh' to avidly watching SRN4 videos on YouTube, it's disappointing I'll never get to ride on one (other than the tiddly IoW one).

Apparently there's going to be an auction of parts from the scrapped Princess Margaret, I definitely want some seats to go in my garage.  I don't know if the museum will see much of that money though, or if it'll all go to the previous owner of the craft (Homes England).

I went to France once on the Princess Anne - would have been about 1985.  I found it a bit boring if I'm completely honest - couldn't see owt out of the windows as there was too much spray.  My dad bought a working model of the hovercraft though, which made up for it a bit (it went along on land on brushes, then had a little motor with a propeller that you clipped on underneath to run it in the bath).

Channel hovercrafts really were odd experiences though. I agree about the spray and lack of view...but so quick 35 mins?

I got offered a car today, I'm going to take a look at it next weekend but could do with some advice, it's a 1977 Marina 1300 Deluxe Estate with only 24000 miles. Its been of the road since 1981 as it comes up on the DVLA website still but both the the V5 and VIN plate are missing, it's thought that the tank was damaged and it came off the road, then about 20 years ago it was scrapped (I'm guessing the owner died) where the current owner got it from, the ignition was smashed to move it but he's got a replacement, he's since done the brakes and clutch but has now lost interest in it as he has over 20 other cars including a Lads Samara and it's been untouched since 2012. What's the likelihood of getting it registered again or could it be have been registered as scrap?

If it's been scrapped then it's not worth the effort but it's still on the system? I must be able to find a chassis number somewhere too? Also what is it worth? It comes with a free but very rusty Ital Estate too.

Trig, do you honestly think anyone on here is going to tell you not to buy that?  Worst case, swap the VIN plate and front end with the Ital - who's going to know? ;-)

As long as you're sure it is the same car and that the person does have the right to sell it,

if it is on the DVLA system, apply for a V5 and get a new vin plate made up.

Funnily enough he did say that he thought about doing that but the Ital is a bit newer!

I'll get it HPI checked and see what comes back first I think!

You used to be able to get a chassis number from the blue-print website but it won't let you anymore :(

If you’ve got the regno you should be able to get the vin.

I also went to France in 1985 on the Princess Anne, I rember the noise and spray. But my biggest memory is sneaking back to the car deck and joining the 2 foot high club in a bright pink Porsche 924 with my boss, we were going to Paris to pitch some adverts for Phillips in car CD players, she was off her face on Coke for the whole trip ( ha!) God I loved the 80's! Don't think another car passed us on the Autoroute either, even though 924's were considered slow, even then.

It must have a floor number, otherwise every Marina in existence would have been rung, vin plates were easy to swap in the 70's too, you know.

If you can't prove the age or identity of it I'd guess irrespective of it being scrapped, you could register it. But it would be a Q plater, though that's a good thing. Added intrigue.

I've just managed to find the VIN number for it online! Result! Only trouble now is that a friend who was interested in it a few years ago has told me how much he wanted for it and i think it's over my budget, he wouldn't give me a price today but said it was worthless. I was thinking £1000-1500 max but he was hoping for more.

But it may have to go through an IVA, that would be nigh on impossible for it. It needs saving, a bit of lateral thinking is probably the best way.

Potential problem there is if you ring up with that VIN and its declared scrap that's the end of it. If its got no numbers at all on it though its complete unknown so as such you could register it.

Mrs Egg had her first (short) drive on her own in the Mazda 323 tonight, and her first drive in an auto to be fair, and well, it doesn't have to be sold yet, lol.

I actually took the Cortina out the garage and drove it somewhere shocker. I've had an over heating front brake since the mot and took it all to bits the other night and found one of the pistons stuck like a bastard.

I left it soaking in bbq sauce overnight and managed to get the piston out with a chisel while removing a fair bit of the crown at the same time. The caliper has a big lump out the cylinder and is generally not great so new caliper is probably need. I cleaned it all up with wire wool and it went back in smoothly. As I was quite keen to go to the Kames classic car show in it today I put it back together and after a quick drive it was much better.

I got up this morning and very, very nearly took the z4 but I went to get the cortina, which was much nicer to drive once I pumped all the tyres up above the 15 psi they'd been sitting at.

I went a route I'd not gone before and what a road! Amazing and no-one on it. I'll defo be back for a shot soon in the Z4 although it did highlight my shocks are shocking. Virtually no damping as I bounce across potholse.

It got there fine, no problems and ran a treat. No stuck brakes, no overheating, which is a first. It's first real journey since I brought it home about 4 flippin years ago.

The show was pretty good but it was melting and really busy plus I really wanted to drive back down that great road so I left after 1 hour and consumption of 1 slush puppy and 1 sugary doughnut.. It has a weird noise jangley metal noise like you're driving with a set of ladders on the roof (i checked I wasn't) but can't see anything immediately alarming put it's probably worth investigating.

This cosworth was like brand new it can't have been driven there. I imagine the guy eats cold beans from the tin to preserve his cooker, which is still in it's plastic wrap.

Tt's nice but I like to see them being used.

There was also an original 60's GT40 that they started up and sounded amazing. I tried to take a picture of it but took a picture of my shoe instead.

1500 quid for a potentially unregistrarable Marina and that's seen as too low. Wind that conversation back about 4 years and say it everyone would have laughed.

It would go well with the van though.

HPI would show if registered as scrapped. Even if it does it isn't the end of the works as long as you can show the engine & chassis numbers match the reg you are claiming.

Chassis number is usually stamped into the shell somewhere as well as being on the plate, plenty of these got rebuilt into new shells and registered as new as the shells used to be very cheap if you knew the right people which would explain the missing tags

Blank vin plates are usually available, leave to sit in something a bit corrosive to match the vehicle once re stamped.

Whats the point of doing that jack thing to the Cosworth?

Posted

He had mirrors under it so jacking it up gave a better view or something . A bit ott I recon .

My favourite car there I didn’t take a pick of was a well used mk1 avo escort with the bda engine in it. Scruffy engine bay and well battered with obvious welding in the engine bay .

It IS possible to get the original number re-issued from DVLA for a car that has been recorded as scrap. but it is a lot of work. A friend recently did this.

The 605 made it up here fine. Averages about 47 mpg which is very reasonable, although I've now discovered the drivers side rear wing is bubbling in some weird places, suggesting it's had a bump. Still liking it, even if the seats are a bit crap for long journeys.

Spent all day on the Transit camper today. Again.

6 Days a week in a job I hate, then crawling under a rust and mud covered transit is wearing thin.

2 weekends until it boards the ferry now.

It better fucking pass the MOT this time or I'll sell it to the bovington tank testing range.
