This was the better one of the pair.

It certainly was, and potentially a really nice one (per my reply when you posted about it in the eBay tat thread), and probably worth more than I bid. It went for £1140 in the end, which doesn’t seem unreasonable. The thank goodness is because I’ve got no business buying any more cars, especially obscure ones that don’t currently run. I have enough of those.

Whats the griff with the Rancho? Any progress on it?

Not that you’d notice :-(

There are excuses: Work has been getting badly in the way this year, plus I had bronchitis for most of the winter and fell down coughing every time I tried to do anything that involved moving about. My little car-fixing time has mostly gone on the Victor, SD1 and Lotus in that order.

Weather and coughing are better now though and work should hopefully drop back down to 5 days a week, so I’m hoping to make a bit more progress.

I was wondering as I just hadn't heard anything about it for a bit and it is one of my favourite cars of forever.

I know how it feels to have too many cars in various states of disrepair with no time to do anything on them, so feel your pain.

Did you get the boot open on your SD1 in the end?

I did! http://autoshite.com/topic/15402-skizzers-sd1-tomorrows-car-yesterday-fixerations-with-mixed-results/?p=1435972

It's the shiter's curse, I think. My mother-in-law has been visiting so I've been on family/gardening duties this weekend, but she's heading off this morning so hopefully I can put in a bit of shed time this afternoon. I've booked a week off work later this month which should also help.

I must also add a big thanks to Brownnova of this parish who has secured me a genuine official Rancho workshop manual from the Llangollen Motor Museum shop :-D

I have come to the conclusion that the Land Rover does not like Bank Holiday weekends. I checked it over this morning, spark and fuel fine, the only noticeable thing being the king lead did not seem fully home on the distributor. I have been out in it and it died just coming off a roundabout. Could not find anything amiss and after a few minutes it restarted, so I went home. I think it is the condenser, I have a spare, but unfortunately that is for the old (different) distributor. Everywhere is shut, hopefully it will get me to work tomorrow and I can get it sorted. Last Bank Holiday it was the starter motor.

?.. It went for £1140 in the end, which doesn’t seem unreasonable. .....

In today's climate, that's probably fair. When I bought mine - running - in 2000, it cost me just under £900.

Yep, coil is fucked. Rotor is also seized on so has to be broken off, so a slightly painful bill for new coil, cap, rotor, and leads - gone for all Bosch parts. Plugs don't look too bad and can be replaced for sub-£20 so that can wait.

Should make quite the difference as the cap isn't too smart on the inside and keeps corroding its contacts and filling up with little metallic particles. Leads are OE as far as I can tell. The plugs aren't but don't look too bad. I'd have bought them with everything else but ECP were actually cheaper so it's by the by.

The dying coil probably explains why the car has always been so slow to start compared to what I'd expect of a Honda (virtually instant).

Off changing the fucked rear upper arm now, and praying that resolves my mystery tracking issue.

If this all works then the car really isn't far off being A1.

Waiting on a train to go borrow a prime shite car to use as all my shite cars are fooked. I've invited my girlfriend along for the ride as well.

This is how to spend a bank holiday Monday

I'm at work, I'm the only one in my office, and I'm listening to Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

The roads were nice and quiet when cycling in this morning, too.

Have you told her what it is or is it a surprise?

Not really car related but thought I'd rub it in a bit.

I'll get some chod photos at some stage, but I've avoided having my phone on me, and therefore no camera, till now.

Highlights so far have been a smiley transit and an e36 coupe badly painted matt green.... But some amazing French and Spanish shite litters this place (Lanzarote) 58e7ff30e6dd8095b3d4367aa8d8f791.jpg

You must be near the equator, you're about 90degrees away from upright!

I stayed about 100 yards from where you are in lanzarote in March I think.

Are you in Puerto del Carmen about halfway up the strip near the big irish bar and hippodrome?

Sod lanzerote, our back garden has been perfectly warm, accidentally drunk 7 cans of ale this afternoon, whoops

Today I have been mainly reliving my youth by burning the underside of my legs on vinyl seats. The difference this time was I was in the driving seat, and I passed on the experience to my daughters.

Oh that's a terrible accident, I hope you had a pint to steady your nerves after it happened?

I certainly have! Seemed rude to leave 3 on their own in the fridge. Amy came back after a weekend at her dad's and got the wine out so I joined her

Mrs CW did visit her sister yesterday. This means she had to drive past Tebay #2 (south Gloucester services on the M5). And this means there is pie for tea...

Game pie w. blackcurrants on the left. Lamb and minted damson to the right.7103e484a87773b327b07a32b358d0d2.jpg

That doesn't look like any services pie I've ever seen.

Have been away for the weekend, which was nice. Family gathering etc. It's my 40th on 22nd, but also my sister's 30th in July, my Aunt's 70th later this month and had just been my uncle's 80th.

The trip did include saying goodbye to this.

But, I saw this.

One of my presents was this:

Then we drove home. Very hot, so off with the shoes!

Cue some major upset on Twitter, with folk asserting that it's illegal/dangerous/KITTEN DEATH to drive barefoot. I can only assume that poor Barefoot has to deal with this on a regular basis.

Ignored them and went for a drive in the 2CV to collect the cat.

It's astonishing how the Michelins have transformed the ride of the 2CV. It's so smooth now, albeit the soft sidewall of the Michelins means it isn't quite so sharp in the handling department.

I know. I'm amazed there IS an award for best motorway service area, it's such a given that it'll go to Tebay. Well, until they created a bit of competition.

Sounds like you need a trip up the m6..

I try to avoid motorways, but I'll try to remember that one services in the country actually sells actual food.

Ghosty - with the rotor arm I assume you undid the screw that holds it on ?
