Another cheeky little Zafira update.

 

A productive evening de-snagging and further evaulation tonight. First up was to replace the knackered rear wiper blade.

 

Sorted.

 

Then to sort the mileage bulb out. What I didn't bank on was that the whole dashboard has to be dismantled in order to reach the bulb. WT actual F, Vauxhall?

 

 

While I had it all out I replaced the dim-looking clock/temp bulbs. Both bulbs were blackened so it was a good call to replace them.

 

 

I also gave the interior a quick hoover out whilst I had time. It was FUCKING MINGING. Clearly the last owner had a pooch and I wouldn't have been surprised to find it still living in there, the amount of dog hair I removed from the seats was staggering.

 

Everything was covered in a film of dirt, sand and mould - it's had a hard life definitely. I got a couple of microfibres and my Poor Boys trim dressing and set to work with a quick polish of all the plastics. It came up like brand new much to my surprise!

 

 

It was around this point that I noticed that it's missing it's tonneau cover. Balls, another thing to add to the list - along with a broken centre air vent between the back seats. Also found that it has a 12V accessory socket in the back too which was a nice surprise.

 

I thought I'd see how the exterior plastics came up with the trim dressing.

 

 

Very encouraging. I will give it a full clay bar / wax / polish etc, when it has an M.o.T. Hopefully will be booking it in very soon...

The allegro failed its mot so thought I'd make a start to the repairs.

Tonight.

At half past 10.

 

About three and a half hours later and ive done the brake pipes. Too awake to go to bed so reading autoshite.

 

Sometimes time gets away from you when you're fannying about in the garage.

Especially when you cock up.

Like flaring an end then realising you haven't put the nut on the pipe first.

Or trying to take the flexi off so you can attack the rusty joint on the bench and bursting the pipe at the other end of the flexi.

Then not having to take the flexi off anyway.

Having to replace the awkward short pipe between flexi and calliper (that was fine before you tampered with it) and having to see with your hands because it's so difficult to get at.

Only being able to tighten the pipe nut on the calliper with the ring end of the 11mm spanner because there's only 5 degrees of turn.

Having to cut the flare off the other end to get the ring spanner over the end of the pipe etc etc blah blah.....

 

I'll fire up the welder tomorrow for the other fail items.

The Rover 600 has gone.

Bought it off AngryDicky's Dad 2 years ago when it was 2 days from the bridge. The plan was for some of my daughters to use it for a French road trip then scrap it when the ticket ran out.

They took it to France abused it for 2000 miles and then.... It seemed silly not to run it in for a test, it passed with no money spent on it.

My second oldest started using it( note I didn't say bought it) she is quite simply a killer of cars, but it wouldn't die.

It did need a few quid spending for last years MOT , exhaust,cat and a calliper. She managed to reverse into a lamppost and rear end a brand new 3 Series plus many scuffs and dents on pretty much every panel, still kept going though .

A couple of weeks ago it cut out and then the battery was completely dead, what with the smashed headlight and a couple of iffy tyres, I decided to replace it with a 1993 520i ( although she since swapped it with her sister's C Class)

 

Anyway at the weekend I had a look and discovered the battery to body earth had come adrift, so I put it on Gumtree. Last night a lad turned up and wanted to buy it- but I can't find the logbook!!!

Turned the house upside down ,but nowhere to be found. Had to turn him away.

This morning phoned a local ' cars wanted' ad. Turned up, want it for banger racer and breaking so not bothered about V5. I'll just SORN it and if the V5 turns up I'll fill it in as scrapped.

Forgot to take a picture as it drove up onto the rustiest mk3 Transit beaver tail I've seen in a long while.

So, bottom line purchase price £100, 2 years 100% reliable service including international executive express duties. Sold for £50 . Seems like a good deal.

Plus it's going out in a blaze of glory.

To get pre 97 entitlements on a post 97 licence you would need to take a moped test,  a minibus test (D1), light truck test (C1) then take a trailer test in the light truck to give you C1+E which would also give you D1+E and B+E.

Stuck the new plug leads on the Renault but waiting to see if the local motor factors can get me a correct wet coil for it for less than getting one online before I can go any further with it.  Might have figured out the timing issue with the Princess too having remembered that setting anything on that car by the book results in it not working properly so what should be TDC according to the book probably isn't actually TDC.  We had this problem before and it took an age to figure out.

 

Not sure if I'll get the shocks done on the Rover this weekend as I'm probably helping Chompy with his Picasso.  We'll see how we get on.  Motivation still at a bit of a low lately, the state of the world is getting me down quite a lot.

Did a bit of tinkering with the Regata this afternoon.

 

Clutch biting point was approx 1" off the bottom of the pedal travel,  as it has had a new clutch but not a cable I had a thumb through the Haynes manual and looked for pictures of what to look for.

 

 

Look at all that space in the engine bay!

 

 

needs a bit of rust cure there.

To be honest, that's why I didn't sell it to the lad from Gumtree, he was happy to take it without V5, and would have paid twice as much.

The haunted Rover wouldn't be haunted, if it wasn't haunted.

 

After returning from the Rover Sanatorium, it gave sterling service to the extent, that it morphed into a veritable high performance saloon (refer to my account of Shitefest shenanigans). However, this came to an abrupt halt, when it was used on a trip to look at another car (refer to my Peugeot 405 thread for reference), when it suddenly decided to piss petrol out of the overflow of the offside carburetter.

Well, some ad hoc carb removage, dismantlage and needle valve needle cleanage did indeed stop it pissing petrol all over everything, but it ran like shit all the way back and then some. It didn't pull and it cut out every time it became stationary, which is quite tedious in a country that has a red traffic light every 50 fucking yards and a government that tells its population that speed kills and said population buying into that horseshit, despite never having actually travelled at speed, because there is a red traffic light every 50 fucking yards.

 

So today, I played some Blues on my Martin Smith parlour guitar and then set to work.

I took out both carburetters (only people who have done that can appreciate how shit that ordeal is), dismantled them and cleaned them out, all the time ensuring that the settings set by noted Rover P6 Guru Tom from Lake View Garage remained undisturbed.

I refitted said carburetters (only people who have done that can appreciate how shit that ordeal is), restarted the car and it made exactly the square root of sod all of a difference.

 

Thats when I got pissed off.

And whenever I'm pissed off (when I'm pissed off, I can guarantee you, that I weigh ten metric tons, exactly like when cake portions are too small, which they weirdly are exactly in Canada of all places, where you would expect everything to be big, but they are fucking Puritans, that's why cake portions are so small there), things are going to happen.

 

So let's note:

 

1. Cars fitted with a distributor only run right, when the distributor cap is actually fixed to the distributor.

 

2. Your petrol pissing carburetter may be a show stopper, but no matter how well you mend it, your car will only run right, when your distributor cap is actually fixed to the distributor.

 

However.

 

There is another thing.

 

For six years (6 years. Since I bought the car in 2001), the windscreen wipers weren't self parking. And the interval didn't work.

So I got used to switching off the wipers exactly the moment when they were in the park position. In fact, I got so used to it, that I did the same thing in all cars, which's windscreen wipers

actually self parked in exactly the position they self park.

 

Today, I attached a black wire that was never connected to anything to a connector that never had anything connected to it.

Low and behold, now the windscreen wipers do self park. But that's not all. Oh no no no no no.

The interval also works beautifully, something that's unheard of in Rover P6 circles. Something that will make me the envy of everyone at the upcoming Didsbury car show.

If they are 1991 then they must still be the original tyres? They have done bloody well for a 65000 mile car, they still have over 2.5mm of tread left!

I thought that tyre dating was a fairly new thing ?
