@bramz7 before you go to any trouble, try cleaning the end of the crank sensor with a small file or emery paper. It might just be dirty. Happened on my Megane with the same setup and it never failed to start after than.

Yes this as well. The tips can get metal swarf on them over time and muck up the readings. Easy to do once off. Like two bolts to remove - it's above the gearbox once the airbox is out.

As alluded to elsewhere, I picked up a sensible new daily yesterday, from @BorniteIdentity

It's so boring. But I have to remind myself I have an Alfa Romeo coming back this week (maybe?!), so this is a necessity. I've even got the radio tuned into Classic FM already, following some advice from @Sir Chocolate Teapot during the A2 handover yesterday.

Maybe I could go out in the Clio 172 to negate the Corolla driving?

No, because the fucker has stopped starting. I took it to work a few days ago, and it was fine (exhaust rattle and PAS whine notwithstanding), and upon trying it the next day, it just refuses to fire. Fuel pump is priming, the immobiliser light goes out, no untoward electrical lights....just cranking. I had a little dig around the roomy* engine bay and pulled two brown relays and moved them around, to no success. Gearbox earth is another possibility, but with no jack or ramps I don't fancy my chances getting to look at that.

PXL_20250525_104602475.jpg.fc6e20fc448e5cff2d35464841bb9d6a.jpg

My normal reaction would be to sell it at a tremendous loss, and tbh that is tempting as I despise cars that won't start (I don't care about any other fault tbh). And spending a whole day waiting for the RAC to show up to tell me it won't start is not my idea of fun.

I've had exactly the same. Lock then unlock car, get in and turn ignition on, then press the central locking button on the fob once or twice. Then try and start the car.

So I did this

PXL_20250525_133425838.jpg.8da1cec6b03cf17a00ffa664cbdaa2d3.jpg

Gave it a good clean, and still no start. It looked quite old with Renault and Siemens printed on it, but someone else had been there as there were marks on the plastic on the other end which looked like flat head screwdriver marks.

Doesn't look like anyone has paid attention to the state of the intake pipes ever.

Anyway, so it still won't start, all the fuses in and out look fine, the relays look all ok too.

I'll try the key trick tomorrow if I can be bothered.

On the flip side I've left it all unassembled just in case I do go down the new sensor route (£28 seemingly).

When I had mine off the road for a while, mine did exactly same in Morrisons car park. Called recovery who plugged diagnostics in, then did as above or similar and it reset the immobiliser and it fired straight up. Cost me £80 to find out.

Go genuine with new plug together. If it fails you get no codes and no start hassle.

Given it looks 3d printed, you won't get much torque on that before it disintegrates!

Yes but you would be desperate and still give it a go !

Splay those pins slightly away from each other. Don't go wild, only needs a bit - enough so it still can fit in the connector still. If that doesn't work then I suspect it's not the crank sensor at fault here.

Gearbox earth usually makes no crank failure. Easy to eliminate 100% with jump lead on block and on negative terminal of battery. If it starts and/or turns over quicker then probably earth. Otherwise unlikely not.

Can I just check did you clean the pins or the probe at the other end? Because if not it's the latter part that you need to clean, just file the tip on, only enough to clean it.

TATDS. I’ve used a length of this stuff on my DCi.

https://www.carbuilder.com/products/classic-style-paper-covered-aluminium-ducting-70mm-id?_pos=19&_sid=bf5e82804&_ss=r

If you do decide to replace it then measure the diameter of the existing hose as I can’t remember what size I bought, there’s a few options.

It didn’t make any difference to the running of my car whatsoever, just made me feel better 🤣

I’ve had problems with my crank sensor in the past and I keep a spare in the boot. I’m not sure if you’re within a sensible travel distance of sussex, but if you are then you’re welcome to a lend of the spare for diagnostics.

The key and immobiliser trick didn't work either.

I have had my fill of trying to get it to go today so I will try again in the week.

I have found a genuine Renault sensor and wiring online, although I still won't be able to do the new wiring.

As soon as it runs again, it's out the door!

Just to double check ... the cams are turning when cranking aren't they?

I think so, the cambelt and dephaser are less than 2k old anyway.

I know car issues make the mind overthink but it did feel a bit down on power last time I drove it. But maybe that was just me.

Mrs K has been suggesting for a while that I should get a replacement toilet seat;  so off to the B&Q website which has a cornucopia of toilet seats.  Browsing through I spot a word I know – DUROPLAST, having read @Inspector Morose's treatise on the very material what could a Shiter do but purchase not just one but two, one complete with soft close and button release.

Now to educate the family on having purchased for them an heirloom that will survive to the end of days

I think I'll give that a go. It probably was just coincidence but the day I took it out was quite wet.

The fuse box can get water into it in heavy rain, there's a relay/plug in there that can cause trouble. I think it might be white.

Give me a minute.

Edit: I had a random misfire on mine in the rain that turned out to be corrosion in the white plug. Different symptoms to you but no harm in checking everything in that fusebox

There were signs of past water ingress on the brown relay pins but nothing recent or catastrophic. Again, quite clear someone has been digging around there in the past as the clips securing the fuse box were broken.

I seldom get my hands dirty but even I'm not that ham fisted!

If it's still the original sensor then there's definitely nothing wrong with replacing it, as long as it's a proper quality brand (so not Febi Bilstein, anything Chinese or Italian).

Been up to Škodafest today. I haven't been to one of these for about five years. There were far fewer cars than the last one I went to but still enough to keep me interested.

This was parked next to me. Owned by an actual Czech man from Ostrava.

That's a stretch from Southampton! Well done.

I was going to ask, what's the story with the Favorit spoiler? Yours has one, mine doesn't. Was it a dealer fit thing?

I only ask because I'm missing the rear downforce in the Woodcote and Abbey sections of Silverstone, and I think it's hurting my lap times.
