I'd have no qualms about driving carefully whilst waiting for new bolts to arrive, but I'd definitely be on the side of not vmaxing on a autobahn.

Did it snap because they're all fatigued and ready to go?

There's still four bolts holding the wheel on, which is plenty.  Some of my cars only had three from new and they've never fallen off...

It doesn't work like that, they're not there for redundancy. No matter the number of bolts, it's engineered to have all of them to provide equal clamping force between the disc/rim at sustained high speeds. You're intending to vmax this car presumably?

Briefly, yes.  I'm not intending to drive all the way through Germany at 155 - I need the car to get me home!

No, the others are nearly new - this was an old bolt the previous owner lobbed in to replace a locking bolt he'd buggered up the head on.

Three bolt cars don't do sustained motorway speeds.

You've been driving the wrong kind of 3 bolt wheel cars 😉

Owner of my favourite restaurant insisted I parked the acclaim in a special place in their car park, an acclaim was his first car, although these days he’s into flashy new things….

Ooh, a Trident!  I flew to Switzerland on one of those when I was very small.

BEA sponsored me at uni and part of the course was at the engineering base at LHR so I used to see these close up for about 5 months of the year. If BEA hadn't got cold feet over some traffic stats it'd be 727 size and would have sold a lot better. The 1-11  would also be 737 size as if would have also used the Medway engine.

I saw that very car at Manor Park Auctions a few years ago. It's bloody fabulous

I'm now £525 lighter after paying a garage to do the clutch and rear main seal on my Carina. It decided to start slipping while I was in the process of moving house and I don't really have anywhere to work on it at the moment. The rear main seal is apparently bizarre and only available from Toyota for £75, the garage I took it to went to a few local seal suppliers and none of them had anything like it.

If the seal was that much, I think you've done exactly the right thing getting it done, I reckon that's a bit of a bargain at that price

Well done 👍

Hats off to Toyota for providing parts support to the old girl... how old is it, 30-odd years?

It says August '91 on the V5. Engine parts still seem to be available since they kept the A engine on until 2002 in the UK and 2006 elsewhere, but they've discontinued just about everything else, it's getting very painful to find parts for unfortunately.

My dad's had his 98 avensis estate off the road for two years because of a rotten exhaust, can't find anyone who will touch it (manifold stud risk) and finding a replacement

Can'tbefuckeditis? Welding studs on a manifold should be bread and butter for an exhaust fitter?

I almost didn’t recognise that as a Rancho, I’m not used to seeing them with their outer panels on.

Verdict: Needs more rust.

Contrasting desirable cars at tonight’s local car meet…

I think the Lea Francis has it as the more desirable to me though!

Great turnout due to lovely weather…

I took ToMM® .... Carina II .... into my tyre place for the front section of the ex.

Was blowing as I drove off the forecourt...

Turned round, they wizzed it up again and 'squeezed the manifold studs' a nip... Quiet for a day...

Took it back and the manager agreed they should have knocked it back for 'dodgy studs, m9' .... However, he agreed to fit 3 new studs FOC and sort it properly 😉.

It was on the ramp over an hour.... Cherry oxy to get them out = WIN 😎

🚙💨

Gave the insignia a clay and polish - the good weather is due to end.

I have had this car nearly a year and I have been pleasantly surprised - it's nothing exciting but I would confidently go anywhere in it despite the big mileage.

I might be punting it on soon as I fancy a change.20240920_152301.jpg.a6fde70c04ae47f5529c71943529241d.jpg

Strange roadkill spotted on the verge as I drove from West Sussex to Kent, you don't expect to see dead kangaroos in the UK.

Sounds like the Whipsnade Wallabies are maybe moving South?
The feral ones escaped from the zoo yonks ago and were extending their range across Bedfordshire back when I lived there (25 years ago). Cute as get out but would scare the literal shit out of unsuspecting horses if you met one out and about ;-)

No, we saw the wallabies at LeonardsLee a couple of weeks ago and this was much larger. If it was hit by a car it would have made a dreadful mess so hopefully it was a truck and noone was injured.

So I need to think about buying a gas bottle for the camper. I’ve never bought a gas bottle before.

I’ve seen the typical cage on a fuel station forecourt etc before - are they all priced at whatever the sellers like or is for example Calor gas X amount wherever it’s stocked etc?

Just wondered if it’d pay for me to ring round, or just buy one wherever I see one.

Think I’m going to want either a 3.9kg or 4.5kg Propane.

Posted

Get a used one off FM marketplace or gumtree, people are often selling part used and if you give it a shake you can tell approximate contents; the smaller ones are always in short supply and often you get knocked back if you want to buy a bottle plus many retail outlets gouge you on the price.

I’ve spent today P4 spannering instead of spending it with the wife. I wanted to investigate the lack of front lights, indicators and very low spongy brake pedal.

Looking underneath at the master cylinder there was an obvious issue. Brake fluid leaking out of the gaiter and a puddle underneath. Ah. I’ve got a spare master cylinder from a P4 I broke a while back, I cleaned it up and replaced the seals before sticking it in a box in the loft. Fitting was surprisingly easy although it was an absolute pain to bleed, in the end I used a vacuum pump on the bleed nipples. Even now the pedal feels spongy although it feels much improved on before. The brakes are now dragging slightly so they might need bleeding again. I think air in the system can upset the remote servo. The parking brake was also adjusted up and now works very well. It was nice to look inside the rear drums and see recent parts and no leaks!

I’m no closer to getting the lights working, although the wiring to the O/S lights and indicators have been cut when the wing was replaced, which explains why nothing is working that side. The temp and fuel gauges have fixed themselves though.

Yesterday I spent a few hours cutting and polishing the paintwork which has really transformed the look of the car. This is my favourite type of paint to polish, very oxidised but pretty forgiving when hammered with a mop and some cutting compound. I’m trying to ignore all the rust I’m finding though!
