Dollywobbler's Invacar - Ongoing

^ Agreed, I thought that too. Although "TWC" would be pronounced (approximately) "Tuc" in Welsh.

Out of interest, what help did Hagerty actually provide in retrieving the Invacars?

Hagerty sponsored the video, so effectively paid for the collection caper. Quite impressed that my random collection of rubbish videos has built up to sufficient levels to pull that off. Only took four years...

W is oo in Welsh, which is why I've called it 'took'.

Brilliant ! What railway is that?

Vale of Rheidol. Only one more weekend of steam this year, and I'm away (for the third weekend on the trot). Boo!

"Hi Hagerty. You know those invacars you paid me to collect? Well I need some help insuring one..."

Some more developments.

The morning view. I gave TWC a wash last night.

I then swept out the broken glass, and had just finished this when the postman arrived with an important package. A key!

Oddly, there are only two types of key for Invacars. They're all the same number, until they changed to a different make/number near the end of production!

The arrival of the key meant I could finally access the engine bay. Eesh...

Pulled out the plugs, which weren't corroded thankfully. I poured in some oil, then gingerly turned the Dynastart unit by hand. It turned! Well, up to a point. There's a definitely 'stop' moment, but I can turn the engine a good three-quarters of the way. Actually, the spare engine that's in Elly the 2CV at the moment had the same issue after ten years of storage in a damp shed. In that, I just poured oil down the bores, left it overnight, then connected up the starter anyway. Away it went! Can I be that lucky twice?

I did connect the jump pack up to the battery, but no dice. I suspect that battery is very dead. That's about as far as I've got today. I need to get some work done!

I'd be cautious of it feels like it's meeting solid resistance, could be a valve stuck open. Granted, the piston walloping it would possibly shut it but no clue if the valves are angled to the bore. Engine looks like it should be a tiny Porsche. Does it provide any kind of cabin heating? I always recall seeing people in these, wrapped up in tartan blankets so I'm guessing they could be pretty cold places to travel.

Liking the "shrunken MGB" style dash, with cryptic warning lights and random gauge placement.

Might pay to amend the subtitles, considering YouTube called your sponsors "Maggoty Plastic Insurance"... as apt as that may be in this instance. :)

Crivens. That's not great. I get no control of the subtitles though!

I'm not forcing the engine for now. If it's anything like 2CVs, then an unused engine can self decoke, so there could be lumps of carbon preventing full travel of the piston. It can soak in oil for the weekend.

That's washed up well. Love the dash, some of the lights are a bit like my Rialto. The filing cabinet starting key is brilliant. How easy is it to get spare parts for these?

I'd have change the handle bars  to clip ons    or ace bars  :-D    for cafe racer speed,  style and looks .

Doesn't everyone have a bunch of   F S   and    F P keys in their sideboard draw ??

Just a thought, if they were government owned, were they ever the vendors to sell? V5 is not proof of ownership and all that.

It is highly unlikely that the gubbermint will come looking for them i suppose.

I imagine the scrap became the property of the contractor engaged to dispose of them. So in effect the NHS passed ownership on the understanding they would not return to the road.

It's fairly unlikely there'd be much paperwork surviving on these now - although DVLA will hold something, assets disposal registers in health trusts are only retained for 5 years (I think - maybe 7).

As far as the NHS were concerned, these two-pot mobility aids were bracketed along with Zimmer frames and prosthetic limbs, and their being car shaped and petrol driven was wholly incidental.

The invalid carriage register essentially got a pardon of sorts granted for surviving invacars to be saved and re registered for the road again. The Invalid vehicle Service having been dispanded in 2003.

Quite a lot of spares seem to have also escaped the cull thankfully. Guess I'll be finding out soon.

I'm far more excited about your Invacar hitting the road than I should be.

It's somewhat fascinating too that they had spare cars and parts kicking around for so long!

Posted

Some were registered as ACs which are allowed but not sure how an actual Invacar would work.

I was wondering about that. I don't speak Welsh unfortunately.

As to getting them back on the road they need to be re-registered as motor tricycles seems to be the answer.

This thread is like an infinite loop where someone new says I thought these were banned and then it gets explained and repeats until the end of time or Dollywobbler gets his back on the road whichever comes first.

Sorry, I only skimmed the last few pages.

I thought these were banned from Wales?

Anyway. how much better does that look for a wash? I'd be absolutely thrilled if it just needed a battery, but regardless it's hardly a complex engine if it needs bits.

I think with that and the Lexus, it would be a challenge for anyone to own two more opposite cars.
