The Autoshite holy grail is now one of us!

How could I have missed this whole event? Just read the whole thing in one go.

It reads like a movie script.

Opportunity, then conflict and bewilderment. Bringing together a random bunch of misfits to form an alliance - to strike for chod justice, culminating in victory and a triumphal homecoming.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Good grief, I've been emotionally wrecked today. The fact that I'm surfing a tide of paracetamol and ibuprofen and the only two things I've drunk today have been Lemsip and Scotch probably doesn't help.

Today I spoke to one of my old customers, a fantastic bloke who I sold a car too six years or so ago; he part exchanged a Rover 75 against it and was visibly upset when he collected it. Today he collected his current car after a major mechanical repair, we caught up and I was reminded of his current, and galling, battle with cancer.

He got behind the wheel, and before he drove off his wife approached me and said;

"Thanks for what you've done. He's been very ill, but having his car back will help him immensely"

"I know. We've been thinking of him...."

At that point I broke off, choked a little and felt my tear gland expanding, and with a slightly pathetic voice managed to utter "he stopped being a customer years ago. He's a friend now".

She looked at me, knowingly, gave me that slow, lingering wide-eyed, gentle smile that says "I understand", and joined her husband in the car.

Now I come home to face another emotional onslaught.

The sun shines strongly on the Sierra, but my bedtime scotch is raised to Emma and my mate Gerald.

Well done everybody. Well done indeed.

I thought your blog post about that abandoned Astra was a great read but please don't do another similar one for the Sierra, not tonight anyway. With your post above and this topic I'm not sure I could cope.

I'm glad this collection was happening after I had to cancel my weekend plans due to my red car being troublesome.  I imagine that was the Shite Gods at work to ensure safe and reliable progression with Cardinal Emma and is a sacrifice I'm not exactly willing to make, but will just have to lump it.

i think Angyl has accidentally come up with the cars full name- Emma Cardinal

I dont think it should have DMB plates, I think it should have Serck pressed aluminium ones, given a good G3-ing before fitting to make them look suitably worn.. Needs a Feu Orange air freshener & beaded seat cover too.. And a a few pairs of door edge protectors.. And a Mr Moonie on the parcel shelf.. And a Garfield..

What it does need is that matching Corgi Sierra displayed on the dash, with a grey grille painted on.  The model was a LHD Ghia but nobody will care.

My nose was bothering me... as I'm in work with fuck all to do other than shout at Sealtainns Sprinter, I ran the series GVG 505-515Y through the DVLA.

505 - Cavalier SRi - date of liability 1/8/95

506 - Escort 1.3GL - date of liability 1/8/92

507 - Maestro 1.6HLS - date of liability 1/10/95

508 - Sierra 1.6L - date of liability 13/6/95

509 - Bluebird 1.8GL 5-speed - date of liability 1/12/93

510 - SHITE HERO SIERRA WINNER MOBILE

511 - Escort 1.3GL - date of liability 1/12/91

512 - Cavalier 1.3L - date of liability 1/12/98

513 - Cavalier 1.6GLS - date of liability 8/4/91

514 - Carlton 2.0S GL - date of liability 27/4/95

515 - Cavalier 1.6L - date of liability 29/11/00

I think the Sierra's done okay.

The plot thickens - I'm thinking this Sierra wasn't originally sold at a independant Ford dealership, maybe a Ford/Vauxhall/Nissan dealership? The only place I can think of is Trimoco in Great Yarmouth but then again they sold Austin Rover stuff too. Oh we need that V888!

I have this Sierra Brochure too, it is being dug out tomorrow!

Ours is dated October 1982, is yours the same?

Emotional stuff, this place has reached new heights. Happy to contribute to the ongoing maintenance fund, and to a gift for Emma who sounds a lovely person. Gawd bless her.

Sounds like Emma's gonna do quite well out of all this.  No microwave Cooperative meal for one for her!

I can't remember the date but it does begin with the 'Sierra Saloon' which is 100% identical to 'our' example 😀

Lots of preamble so page 20/21 is the Sierra Saloon.

Yes that's what I meant. I bought this brochure from eBay in 2007 and until then I never even knew about the grey-grille base model. It was instantly my favourite.

Looking at the arches and sills the car has had some care in its life.

Having said that I think the build quality is much better on early cars than 85 -88 models.

Fuck me. Just caught up on this thread. This place is fucking awesome.

That there London middle bit does seem kinder on cars when it comes to rust.  It's a much warmer micro climate, I imagine they don't really salt the roads much, if at all.  You see plenty of battered cars of all ages but few that have succumbed to galloping rot even when they're of advanced years.

Keep as is. We'll make sure it's mechanically good but leave the cosmetics alone. That rusty rear wing will want attention at some point, but the dents can all stay.

We were talking about replacing the tatty dash and door cards, but actually I don't think they're that bad and should probably stay. Personally I'd even leave the empty fag packet that's in the empty radio cage; mind you, it's mostly not going to be me that drives around in it.

The philosophy Bornite and I were discussing was to maintain it pretty much as the previous two owners had, at least with the non-essentials. Other people have a say too though...

I agree wholeheartedly. Even the protective plastic-clad front plate is a part of the thing in spirit.

Teak oil? That's for wood.

Ooh, hadn't spotted that it was a Norfolk car.

My first car (Mk3 Escort van) was CVG514Y.  True story.

I should reiterate, again, that the teak oil is used exclusively for my garden furniture and my 6 pack.

Why do you put teak oil on lager?

I would be delighted to do a video review of this car. I'm hoping to do a few at Shitefest, but I'm tempted to make the trek to do this one all on its own. Feel good thread of the year, and it's only April!

The one I posted on page 1 & 7 I think is the same one, Sierra Saloon is on p20-12. I scanned posted the whole brochure here a while ago:

http://autoshite.com/topic/15614-1982-ford-sierra-brochure-scan/

it's dated from Oct 82 and I've had it since then, I must have got it either at the 82 Motorshow or from Stormont Ford in Sevenoaks, where my Dad got his 1980 Cortina 2.0GL (company car) serviced. I always made sure I came away with plenty of literature so I've got quite a bit of Ford stuff from that era.

He wasn't keen on the Sierra at all, and by the time his Cortina needed replacing in 84 they had brought out the Orion so he got a 1.6 Ghia one of those instead of a Sierra 2.0GL. I had to talk him out of opting for an Ambassador 1.7HL.

Thanks for sharing.

I remember a friend's father having a new one of these which was also Y reg, a beige one (or course).  It really rotted, and I rememeber it having a rusty petrol tank almost immediately.

My impression was that the Sierras made in Belgium, generally the Ghia and GL cars, were much better than the Dagenham ones which were the lower spec ones - though no doubt there would be exceptions.  The VIN number starts SFA for Dagenham and WFO (I think) for Belgium.  Which one is this?

Wow, I slip away for a couple days and I come back to this. What a lovely surprise! Hats off to everyone involved, glad this has been saved from the normies.

Cap well and truly doffed to all involved. A great story of rescue.

Lisbon road I agree the genk built sierra's were much better than their Dagenham counterparts, but we have 2 1984 sierra 3 doors a base and an L both are genk cars but the base is solid with minimal welding done over the years and the one I never really mention the L is a rot box which is a weldathon waiting to happen

FFS. - I have got a half marathon in the morning so should have gone to bed ages ago but can't stop reading until I get to the end.

If there was one thread to sum up a true Autoshiter, it is this one...... Thread of the Year 2016 should now be officially closed!
