I'm not an LR-perv but this was nice to see yesterday, I think the Hi-cap is my favourite Defender variant.

It's not a Defender.

It's a 1982 Land Rover Series 3 Hi-Cap.

Defenders do not start until 1990 and have Zebedee springs, not leafs

"History

Originally, these vehicles were simply called the 'Land Rover' – an off-road capable car model of the Rover Company.

As 'Land Rover' became established as a brand, the 'Series' indication later became a retronym model name.[9]

The Range Rover was introduced in 1970, and the company became a British Leyland subsidiary in 1978.

In 1983 and 1984, the long and the short wheelbase Land Rovers were given official names – the One Ten, and the Ninety respectively.

Together they were badged the Defender models in 1990, after the 1989 introduction of the new Discovery model."

I agree with you it's a lovely example.

Thanks, yes I thought the Defender name came later; I suppose I was being lazy.

That will be one of the first; the HCPU was only introduced in 1982.

Thanks, yes I'd have perhaps not got the shot were it a Defender; although it did look quite incongruous in the retail park regardless of age. While we're at it here's another LR from just around the corner. I'm not sure I've ever seen it on the move.

But the highlight was this. Those are Favorit Silverline alloys, minus the centre caps.

And its only a bloody Safeline, the first one I've ever seen.

IMG_20250113_095942.thumb.jpg.071066bacea2e9fed6f35899c93f65d0.jpg

The Safeline had a number of safety features most of which were already compulsory in the EU anyway so we didn't need a special edition. Like ABS and a passenger airbag. Actually we got passenger airbags as an option but never standard but in some markets they didn't even get a driver airbag as standard.

But these also had side airbags which were never even option in the UK. Plus lane change warning and radar brake assist. Obviously I'm lying there but they had most of the safety features that were available in the mid 90s.

That's horrific. This is how an mk Vl should look, apparently. I assume the original car has been been chopped up, chassis retained, and a special body zip tied on top. I see the hubcaps appear to be original.

What a carbuncle.

It's a special built in the 1970s when it was fashionable to build cars that has a slight resemblance to something built in the 1930s , but only using a straight edge to design the panels..

I clicked on the dealers stock and found that. If you click again it just goes back to the cancelled ad. The dealer does not appear to have their own web site, so I could not find the full ad description.

My wife follows this lot on YT.

https://www.youtube.com/@BrandweerLunteren/videos

So we had to go to the fire station to see. There was no firemen there but a nice builder, who is undertaking some changes to the storage.  He opened the big up an over door so she could take some photos of the engine and even sat in the big MAN 4x4 fire truck.

I was more interested in what lived next door.

And on the motorway near Appledorn spotted a  trailered  Renault  Fregatte. Dutch records show it is a 1953 model, imported into NL in June 1981. Last changed hands in Dec. 1992

One for the "cars I didn't know exist" thread, a freaking Australian market Leyland P76 in Harrogate! I wondered whether this was an Australian design, turns out it is! Built for only 2 model years as well.

My knowledge of most markets is only really starting around the mid-80s I have to admit, with a few exceptions. That one definitely wasn't on my radar 😂 Leather and a V8 didn't quite seem right for a British Leyland product hah.
