My Saab 9000 was quite Grandad spec.

Black, proper three spokes, CSE trim level (it was a hatchback not a saloon, alas) with velour and virtually no blanking plates.

Buuuuut it was one of the very few 2.0 16v nasp powered ones sold, with a stonking 135hp.

So it was very slow but thirstier than everything from the 2.0 LPT with 150hp to the Aero.

My dad had one just like that, but it was a CS with every option. First owner must’ve been adamant they didn’t want a fancy turbocharger

  2. I enjoy some of the features in my 1997 Elgrand, like the remote control that operates most interior features inc the sunroof, auto lights and switchable four wheel drive. However these can all be switched off or ignored at will. Modern features that try and take over the driving for you I find are generally somewhere between off putting and dangerous. Being able to park and remain in the correct lane are things that should be within the capability and control of the driver, but maybe I’m a Luddite

  3. Had a ride on TWY8 and LHL164F and it was surprising how little advancement there has been in the ride comfort of passangers there has been in the last 60-odd years

  4. Today I attended Dewsbury Bus Museum's day at Batley Mill Village. I don't know very much about buses so won't be able to give much detail to the pics, but the fact that these enthusiasts are able and willing to drive people around in their preserved, restored or well worn vehicles for free is something I find heartwarming and fasciniting in equal measures.

They’re not at all as dynamically interesting as an equivalent age French thing but fairly endearing for the enduring solidity.

1.2 engine is in two different power outputs. I have a customer with a VW Fox, one with a Polo and one with a Fabia, all with these engines. They seem surprisingly torquey (heavy flywheel?) yet thrive on revs.

That’s interesting, in my experience they are gutless and reluctant to rev, but that was the 12 valve one

  6. I’ve got nowt against ride height adjustment, my daily is wound down pretty low. However, I’ve fitted wheels and tyres that never contact the body, even with 200l of veg oil in the back. I’ve always thought that air ride was a way to have wide wheels, good fitment, stance and all that shit, while retaining drivability on the road. So why the fuck has the 2 tone W124 been driven with the tyres and wheels rubbing on the body, when they had the option to avoid it when in motion? I know there’s a catalogue of errors here but I can’t get my head around that

  7. I’m so glad you’re making a good car out of this where I failed to have a working car for most of the time I had it. Broken spring and dead battery maybe a sign the curse is still going, Hope that’s the last of it.

Re the handling, I think magazine journos call it safe understeer, not sure I agree
