What's your thing?

What's your thing? So something vehicle related that you are really into.

Come up with this  after learning that @Peter C has a thing for old airport tugs. And we have one that is in to invalid carriages, one thats on windscreen wipers etc.

So what's yours?

Mine seem to be old taxis and high mileage/hour vehicles and eastern block farm machinery.

but this is also very much me, but with even more nerd applied, the inner workings of the DVLA and the general British registration system through time, the rules and regulations around it what was and was not allowed and how those things changed through time, the changing of schemes and all that, I could quite literally bore one to death about the the system the DVLA works with and all its rules/policies etc

its the one thing that I feel that makes me feel like at least im good for something around here LOL, for if someone has a vehicle registration/DVLA matter, I am usually able to get it resolved/tell them what they need to do to get it resolved or provide an answer to their query

in fact just for @Peter C and to complete the trifecta so to speak, here is an Airtug that helped me with my DVLA and Invacar research (its through these vehicles either these tugs themselves or some of the baggage tugs that @cms206 also posted about in I think another thread) that i learnt that, "Airport support vehicle" is a valid vehicle coded type with the DVLA, who knew these vehicles actually had a proper coded body type with the DVLA :) (because you bet your behind that I looked these up with my deeper looking system LOL)

Mental. Absolutely mental.

Fingers crossed for a Model 70 with your name on it Dez, if anyone is more commited to suicidal plastic bath machines it's you.

As an aside we used to run a pair of Q-reg Douglas DC8s (Q676/7 ATV) which were registered as Reliants; I reckon they were about as far removed from a Rialto as you could feasably get.be8bf17b8c0d7278a730272956380ed1.jpg

and thats another thing thats my thing, its seeing others with specific interests like this, as often times, you learn through these people that there is so much more to something then one realises, I bet that Airport vehicles have a large and rich history thats probably been sadly forgotten about, or never cared for in the first place, so I am always fully supportive of people with these "niche" interests,

especially because I know first hand from my own Invacar and lightbulbs obsessions, just how deep something as "simple" as a lightbulb or an invacar goes!

Muscle cars , from a time when petrol heads ran car companies rather than bean counters,

Recovery trucks  loved working on them & the things they can be made to do.

Edsels, and the whole story surrounding them.  I would dearly love to own one someday.

Sort of leading on from that - any car that was a huge failure or flop, including racing cars and in particular, rubbish Formula One cars.  I love looking at why they failed and what might have been different if things had been done better.

Not a motoring one, but I am obsessed with the story of this guy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Crowhurst.  If I had the finances and the sailing knowledge, I would want to try and build a replica of his boat (but built properly and carefully with all the safety features installed) and try to recreate his voyage to see if he could have gone round the world.

Shonky Italian Diecast toy cars from the 1970s to the 1990s, especially those in the larger scale of 1/24. A subconscious calling of the past for me.

Vehicles that have worked hard and are now gently skimming along line where any MOT could be it's last and normal owners would have given up.

I remember a friend's dad running an early Audi Quattro in the late 90s with various bits of trim hanging off and just enough bulbs still working at the back to pass the MOT that was still regularly driven at 100+.

UAZ 452 and Gaz 66/69

I've wanted to do a Gaz 66 camper conversion since I was about 14. It would be awful/ace, probably 70/30 in favour of awful, but still

Increasingly interested in Tatra cars

Volvo estates.

Yep, this. I'm already getting itchy feet with the XC70 but the only thing I want to replace it with is another Volvo estate, ideally another 850 or maybe a 940/60.

I don't, it feels like the sort of thing my dad may have had but I don't recall ever seeing it around so probably not.

Can recommend.  My other half's parents bought it for me as a gift a couple of years back and it's rather good.

My 'thing' is estate cars and preferably Volvos.  I was in Gothenburg last week.  Third time in the last year.  The first time, we went to the Volvo Museum, the second time I was the fifth general visitor into the new World of Volvo on its Grand Opening day back in April.  This time around, I just perved at all the old V70s.  There are hundreds of them in Gothenburg, especially around the ferry terminal at Saltholmen.  The residents of the islands can get a permit to park a car on the mainland and get back home on the ferry (which are part of the general public transit network, so you can use a tram, train or bus, etc. ticket on them) and the Volvo estate ratio is very high.

British cars, Jaguar, Rover etc...

Papping old cars.

Collecting model cars.

Unspeccing cars from lower to higher trim.

Saddest of all; Floor mats 😐

I can't really explain the last one, I like it when a car has its original fitted floor mats rather than those horrible aftermarket universal mats.

I guess it all started when I bought a set of original mats for my Rover 827Si (which came with an assortment of bathroom and house door mats) it unlocked something, when I fitted the mats, they fitted exactly as they should. Up until then I never realised that alm cars had their own set of mats. So ever since, every car I have had has had a set if original mats where I'm able to find some. Even my Vectra B now has a set of original rubber mats in them which were had for £15 and in like new condition, they're usually something like £70 new.

It's a tad expensive but the cheapest I could find.

Vans.  They live a short, hard life and get thrown away.

Police cars ditto, especially American.

American cars in general, just in case there were any doubts!

Model cars.  Again, just in case anyone had any doubts!
