Handsome bastard, fighting me all the way...

If you do really want to keep using it, I'd suggest getting one of these:

https://a.aliexpress.com/_mOjmSL9

Start the car up, let the suspension get to it's correct height, plug that tool in and clear the codes. Then go drive. Should be all back to normal providing the height is correct and nothing is upset. Modern equivalent of hitting a starter motor with a hammer. If something is upset, it'll tell you the code and why it's upset.

A manufacturer specific diagnostic tool is essential for any complex modern car like this.

Happy to help facilitate an AliExpress purchase should this be useful

Is it actually sinking?
One of my two X350s had a plethora of spurious "faults" caused by poor earth connections behind the headlights.

Me too I think I mentioned the same a while ago on this one.

The pump uses the one behind the ns headlight. They do like to dissolve.

I have previously suggested a 205 but you will note that despite being spacious and enjoyable to drive they are a small car .

Something like a 205 auto or MK1 Clio auto (one of the mega high spec ones with leather etc.) would be significantly cheaper to repair and maintain and still be a pleasant auto, but the man wants a tank.

Maybe a good alternative would be a model that isn't too small, but not overly complicated either, and with affordable spares. 406, Omega, old Volvo, something like that?

@eddyramrod as much as you don’t love a polo, how about I lend you one and take the jag for a week and have a tinker? I have had a few x350 and also have sdd/ids.

Spent many an hour on the suspension and the joy it brings. Height sensors can provide erroneous readings and make them sink, pumps being noisy is the mount cage upside down with the springs the wrong side of the mounts.

Limp was for me invariably exhaust sensors or their wiring either pre or post cat assuming it has the right plugs fitted.

I am not the panacea but I would happily have a play over a week in Feb if that lines up for you.

Random one, has it blown a few headlight bulbs on one side?

Must admit it'd be heartwarming if the AS collective could sort it.

I ran one for a couple of years…….very nice car. Long-standing suspension issues (which had defeated a specialist)eventually fixed by fitting a new compressor. I had repaired the old one in the past but it never fixed the underlying issue. Only other problem was a handbrake fault which was caused an internally broken wire…….a right twat to find. Not a viable car to run on a limited income if you are having to pay someone to fix……….you’ll be paying for a lot of head scratching and tea drinking

Since sold to WBAC for decent money……..and replaced with an old diesel Fabia.

What about something like a Peugeot 205? One of those is on my bucket list as I loved the one I had a shot of (why did people buy Fiestas when they could have had this I said to myself!) and they still seem affordable for the money you'd probably get for the Jag? I'd bet they are a skoosh to work on too!

I understand why you suggest that, but see below:

A tank is where I'm at home, just a cross for me to carry.

Very generous, and I thank you heartily for the offer!  However, @DirtyDaily has already given it two working days, and he seemed to have and understand the correct software; for the same reasons you have.  At the moment though, I'll respectfully decline, at least temporarily.

And no, it hasn't blown even one headlight bulb in the time I've had it - 2 years 9 months, and counting.  (Touch wood!)

It would, very much so.

Height sensors would be worth an unplug and clean, the car takes a good while to go to sleep and if they are erroneous it’ll drop. Chased that one for weeks until I noticed verdigris on a few pins.

Anyway I wish you the best with whatever you decide Eddy. Good vibes but not through the wheel.

@eddyramrod, please reconsider @bangernomics very generous offer. Even if you leave the Polo untouched while he has the Jag.

A fresh set of eyes on it can only be a good thing, even if it's just to get the Jag in a better place to be sold on.

The height sensors are working correctly. The main issue i could see was the massive purge of pressure when the pump stopped. Went to 0 after 3 seconds. It's had a "new" valve block and new pump which doesn't seem to of fixed this but i haven't had my reader on it since the new pump. I am by no means an expert so I could be missing something semi obvious.

I didnt have time to investigate the limp mode fully. I would say that at some revs it seemed to have a spark knock or potentially just a knock? It's unhappy.

Maybe leave the keys in it on a busy street?

Realistically, how much would the insurance pay out?Think eddy needs to set a price he'd accept and be happy*if it was a quick fix for the buyer and for the car live on.Would it be better in an auction of some sort, where the fault might be masked?Buyer beware and all that. No

If the eml light is on (as I understand it is) then an auction or WBAC will note this and value accordingly though - even the crappiest auction place allows bidders to turn the ignition on and hear the engine running, or have an auction bod do it.

I suspect the only place that would be OK to sell this privately, without loads of the inevitable timewasters/idiots/wannabe test pilots, is here.

I suspect the same, and have for some time.

OK... I know I said I was taking it off-sale until spring, but if anyone is in a position to make an actual offer, then please feel free.  Last Shiter price was £1600, and that was before the new MoT in November.  Once you drive it away you can do whatever you like with it!  But note: you can actually drive it away!  It's not so disabled it begs for a trailer or beavertail.  And I'm still open to swops/PX if they're older.

This. So much this.
Surely, it must be worth a shot?

Eddy I think another way to punt this would be the old-fashioned way.

Sack-off the internet and it's weazles and print out an ad and put it in the car window - brief explanation of the faults - a come and buy me price and a phone number. We all used to sell cars this way.

Someone is going to fall in love with this masterpiece - it's so beautiful. Yes it's flawed but someone will be happy to sort it because they have seen it.

There will never be cars made like this again - it's the end of an era.

Buy a burner phone (a cheap disposable pay as you go) put no texts in the ads and ignore all that rubbish and you'll know every time it rings it's only about one thing (unless spam).

Just an idea.

We did.  I've done it.  I can think of at least three I've sold this way.  This car has carried For Sale signs everywhere it's been for most of 2024, including several trips to the Lakeland Motor Museum where it is surrounded by classic-car people of all persuasions.

Ever heard the phrase Fish where the fish are?

Selling or scrapping this car is only as difficult as you want it to be.

I’m not sure they will be the folks who are your potential audience for this car though.

I think a buyer for this would be someone who’s happy to put their time and potentially money into it, without any initial idea of how much time and money that will be, and I would imagine the sticking point is price - I don’t think four figures is the area that this type of buyer is budgeting. I say this as someone whose normal route into ownership is buying something that could be a nice car, but is somewhat broken at the time of purchase - the thing that normally seals the deal for me is that the car is £notmuch and if it’s beyond my ability to repair or needs a bit spent in parts then I’m not left feeling too sore.

I think the offer from @bangernomics is an excellent opportunity to make some progress towards having the car in a condition where it is saleable for the price that you would feel comfortable at. I think all of us want to see the car functional, and you feeling better about the situation :)
