Specially Adapted Cars

On another thread there was a picture of a Tesco specially adapted Escort Mk3 to carry trolleys, looked like it never left the confines of the car park.

These cars that are adapted to suit some odd purposes fascinate me.

This Mini Van popped up on Gumtree a few years ago, converted for wheelchair transport.

Aye, I think the most famous Tissier conversions were for the newspapers but they did a wide variety of conversations including flatbeds/car transporter configurations

Looks like it lasted up to October 1992

I just can't imagine a car being needed for this purpose - how big was the car park!? There were far fewer large supermarkets back then too.

Nowadays the big branches have a Polaris ATV type thing or a little Kubota/New Holland tractor with a lowdeck trailer on the back to collect the trolleys. Basically the same idea, but I guess those little ATVs didn't really exist back then.

Having done trolley duty occasionally in a (smaller) supermarket, I can see why you'd want a vehicle doing the legwork when the car parks are as big as they are.

Locally we have one of those Ridgeback thingies that scoops up the hundreds of trollies abandoned round here (High rise estate...)

SEAT Terra Chairman. Because the regular SEAT Terra wasn't unusual enough over here.

A few years ago there were stories about cars used for transporting diamonds throughout Europe. The reason was something like you could buy diamonds in London one day , take them to Amsterdam ,Paris or  Moscow the next day and make a fortune. It came to light when one of the modified cars appeared on eBay with 600,000 miles on it.
The seller had a fleet of specially modified Golf R32s, with strong boxes welded to the rear floor pan, armoured glasss and run flats. Don’t know if it’s still a thing or what they use now, Golf Rs would make sense.

And a 613 ambulance.  Lifting the casualty over the tip of the V8 in the back must have been a hoot

Can’t remember that, we used to do the big shop at Savacentre. I know at Crystal Peaks they had a couple of Talbot Express trolley truck things at the Sainsburys there.

That was for filming horse racing, apparently it was the only vehicle which had a smooth enough ride to have a stable platform for filming.
