The amount of water at the War Memorial end of the village (which you can't reach now) Somerset Levels have flooded for generations but do wonder if the EA could be a bit proactive with regard to trigger points (don't think I can afford an Amphicar !)

Sounds like welney wash near me, that floods every year, sometimes several times, council response?  "oh we're looking into it!"

I've lived here nearly 25 years, same thing every year, how long do you need to 'look into it' for?🙄

Oh yeah, I'm driving to Glasgow for a convention day after tomorrow.  So yes, precisely the time I'd expect the weather to go to crap.

I have been mildly fucked over by a client today. Worked for them a few times already, usually been a pretty pleasant experience. Standard job for them involves getting one video file and a folder of images, along with the script for the video with annotations for pretty much exactly which edits need done where, I can knock it out in two six hour days of hyperfocus. The pay is shit, but I don't really care because it's a youtuber I enjoy watching and it feels good to be doing work that feels like it's making the world slightly less shit.

Anyway, the friday before last I get the message from his manager telling me there will be a project and to expect the files by Tuesday/Wednesday, deadline the 5th, so block out some time. Absolutely fine. Gets to wednesday, message from the creator himself telling me it's taking longer than expected to finish up the writing and filming, so files by Friday night, deadline still the 5th. Again, mostly fine if a bit annoying. Wake up on Saturday morning to a couple of Google drive emails telling me the files had been shared with me. Flipped through the script, and it's relatively short, doesn't call for too many fiddly edits. Make the executive decision to leave it til Monday because I like to keep my weekends clear when I can. Now, this next part is probably my fault... Wake up entirely later than intended on Monday, and stupidly decide to fiddle around with some dayjob stuff because I'm confident that I can block out Tuesday/Wednesday for this project and it work out fine, I've completed one of these edits in one 16 hour marathon before after all.

Fast forward to Tuesday morning (today) and I am getting the files ready to start work. Open the folder that would generally contain the images... oh, there's no images...

I look at the annotated script again, and realise that instead of the usual filenames referring to the needed images there's descriptions, with the unsaid implication that I have to find them myself. BOLLOCKS.

I can do it, obviously, but ffs it would have been nice to have been forewarned!

When I submit the work I'm going to politely tell him that I've done it for the usual price this time, but in future it'll be a (fairly substantial) upcharge for gathering any significant quantity of assets, because it is a pain in the tits.

And yes, I know I am not helping with the rapidly approaching deadline by typing all of this instead of just getting on with it.

An update on this. Yesterday evening, after I'd finished the initial editing pass, I got a message from his manager asking how the edit was going. Updated him on the progress, and very bluntly but professionally told him that changing the scope of my role like this is out of order. Initially he said to talk to the creator myself, I said that I didn't think it was unreasonable to expect a manager to act as a go between for this.

Got a message from the creator a few minutes later apologising and he'll do the edit himself, and he'll give me half of the fee as an apology.

I think really that money is to make me less likely to publicly talk about the experience somewhere his fans will see it.

I've learned an important lesson about under-pricing oneself, I think. My main work doesn't exactly pay that well, but it makes up for it by being enjoyable to the point that I'd probably be doing the same things anyway.

I think I've cracked a rib.

This started two weeks ago when I fell over in Romania in the middle of nowhere. Actually a place called Lotru but if you look it up it really is the definition of the middle of nowhere.

I had been really careful for the first two days as there was snow and ice everywhere but I got to Lotru and there was no snow just thick frost so I'd let my guard down. I found this nice looking old bridge and thought it warranted closer inspection.

IMG_20260120_081509.jpg.93807e64bf640fa9915ed361bb3f71fd.jpg

But whilst I was focusing on the bridge I failed to notice the almost perfect rectangle of solid ice just in front of it. As soon as I put one foot on it I went straight down landing flat on my back. It felt a bit bruised but I thought that was understandable and carried on and it was definitely feeling better until last weekend when I caught a bad cough and all the coughing was making it sore again but I thought it  was probably muscle pain.

Then yesterday I was picking up a shopping bag, the heavy one with the milk in, to put it on the kitchen worktop when I actually heard a crack at which point it all became much more painful.

Been to the walk in centre this morning as my local surgery couldn't give me an appointment for two weeks. The doctor prodded me about and used her stethoscope but didn't do any x rays because she said they can't treat ribs anyway, you just have to let them heal so there was no point exposing me to x rays. She said it probably is a fracture or a pulled muscle (I pointed out that muscles don't tend to go crack) but none of them are out of place.

I've just been told to take it easy and take lots of paracetamol/ibuprofen. And no heavy lifting obviously.

So I'm now off work for a couple of weeks so it's not a total grump but I also can't work on the cars or do stuff on the railway in the loft.

I'm not bored yet but we'll see how long it takes.

So now is the time to spend ages on your favourite buying sites, stocking up on cars/parts/model stuff😁

The other half will be really* happy.

Certainly not my best couple of weeks. First the audi a2 had my first ever puncture  whilst driving.

And today

The laguna in lidl carpark on start up went bang and.

Hit a fucking massive pothole yesterday. As y'all know, British Potholes are the bast in the world, innit.

Somehow no damage. Felt for the five other cars parked up and stranded. Some were still parked up five hours later.

As an aside, it is interesting to see how much abuse some cars will take and how the components respond:

Ahhh, my favourite* people - my built in filtering algorithm tends to blank anything sport related out. Is this fitba'? Looks like a proper match result but not sure which country Raducanu is in?

I live geographically almost as far as it's possible to go east from Cornwall and still remain in England.

Welsh signs in a Cornish supermarket is far more interesting...🤣

Roughly whereabouts are you SS? I'm off down to see mum this weekend and she's near Langport. Guess the choice of pubs to visit will be reduced!

I always wonder what they're trying to push to the bottom of page 28 under the ad for incontinence pants when they blanket some non story like this. Are we going to wake up on Monday morning and find out they've put VAT up to 40% and banned Labradors?

Thanks for that, appreciate the info.

Fond memories of learning to drive on the old airfield near you! :)

Oooh, that's very tempting (me, a hoarder - never!). Unfortunately I'll be in the "nice" car, rather than the Shonky Shogun of Shame, so collecting an A series wouldn't be possible this time.

Why do we charge a £99 admin fee?
This small fee helps cover the cost of essential services such as:
    •    Processing DVLA paperwork (logbook, ownership transfer)
    •    Assistance with taxing the vehicle
    •    Providing a warranty for your peace of mind
    •    Managing vehicle documentation and service records
    •    Ensuring a smooth, compliant, and professional handover

Piss right off with that.

Daughter #1 has been unable to drive due to a medication change.  She is OK now but needs a doctor to sign her off.  DVLA have repeatedly messed up sending him the forms and he can't do anything without them.

She tries phoning but can rarely get through.  She has sent registered mail to them, no response so she phones them about it and each time claim that they haven't received it, until she quotes the receiving signature and code, then they find it on a heap 'to be processed'.

She can't insure her car any more.  Youngest son has been using it but insurance ran out so she called to SORN it.  Couldn't do it without the V5 number.  Son had the V5 as it has been to the dealer for an airbag recall and he was in Fuertventura.  They then said that if she didn't supply the number within twelve hours there was a £1,000 fine.  She had to pay £25 for a new V5, at least she got the number over the phone and could then SORN it.  V5 still hasn't arrived, three weeks later.

She had on someone's advice voluntarily surrendered her licence as it was supposed to be easier and quicker to resolve the problem when the doctor cleared her.  Now faces the difficulty of getting her licence back.

Seems worse that French and German bureaucracy.

Aye, here we are. Well down the BBC web page and pushed off all the national rags front pages by the usual bollox about Trump, Starmer and Epstein. I can't think of a single reason why keeping this thing in jail for however few years it gets is preferable to feeding it to the pigs.

Just been to The Range and bought some Iceland “Party Foods” and chicken at Dockside.
This is the second time I’ve had to object to the price charged.
£18.00 in food but charged £20.50
Staff not happy with me objecting and having to change prices on the till.
The person who did it said to me they work for The Range and not Iceland.

So I don’t care who works for who.

Just be aware that their systems are charging you too much.

If you just automatically swipe a card and leave without checking, you could be charged more than you should.

I hope this is helpful until the owners correct their system and pricing.

Booked today and tomorrow off work to strip out the kitchen ready for remedial works to gas, electric and plumbing to start on Monday.

All of us in the house woke up this morning full of sore throats and general snotbogeys.

Then the washing machine (which doesn’t live in the kitchen) shat itself.
