Sounds like an awful experience for your daughter and you too. I’m glad justice was done.

Don't like that at all, Cav, but I'm pleased justice was done. I hope you and your family can put this horrible experience to bed and move on.

I tend not to talk about it in public bits of the forum but I work in law enforcement and we fucking love it when we get a result like this.

Because of your daughter's bravery he's been prevented from doing the same thing to another young woman. She should be very proud.

Posted

@CavcraftI can't think of an appropriate word, I offer my sympathies that your daughter has had to suffer this ordeal and hope that it's not shaken her up too much.

My grump of the day pales in comparison to Cav's and I'm pleased that justice has been served.

Received a letter from a debt management company asking for a lot of money because I was fined for non-payment of the Dartford Crossing toll back in April.  Unfortunately I hadn't received the original letter for various reasons but they had me bang to rights.  I've paid it through gritted teeth.

I got the letter ten minutes before I left home for a job interview.  At least that seemed to go well...

Put the saab in for timing belt and service yesterday. It's come out with the mil on and the fan running constantly. £450 down with a car worse than it went it.

Good news cavcraft. Pleased for the result.

I feel like my troubles pale into insignificance with some of the other crap going on but to add insult to injury, my tumble dryer has now died. Not heating...

I had to go around to my rental property, because the flush on the bog broke.

Tenant is moving on in a month, so wife asks me to take some up dated pictures.

Wife says maybe she should  come.

I should have said yes.

It didn't take long to fix the bog with a new flush unit £12.

Took about 15 mins.

Took some photos. WhatsAppd them to her.

Initially her suggestions were fine, but i couldn't get a picture of any bedroom that she liked.

I think that I'd need to knock a wall down, because, further back, higher lower, more window, more floor, it makes the room look too small.  And apparently I'm taking the same picture again and again.

She eventually lost it on the phone. I don't think it's possible to take the pictures she wants with a smart phone, and what I've got won't stop anyone wanting to view.  But I got home and she's gone off "for a walk" so she doesn't kill me.

1.5 hours I was taking photos and sending them to her.  Luckily the tenant had gone out.

I'm not sure there's logic in life.

The abscess in my cheek is back with a vengeance. Face the actual size of the two faces I'm told I have. At least after attention yesterday it does seem to be draining/doing something but I look like a medical experiment so I am staying indoors. I'll take Chester out for a walk when it gets dark and then I'll wear a mask!

The bulges from last weekend mean it's fucked:

ALL of my cars have synchronised their mood swings

414 - Stripped thread in the gearbox steady, bolt has worked loose and it jams in reverse because the engine has dropped and the selector fouls the chassis rail

Micra - CV's and calipers fixed only to find the two tyres not holding air have perished sidewalls on the insides, I was going to MOT it this morning

Streetwise - some wierd electrical drain has flattened the battery

Z3 - folding roof has given up, probably the switch in the middle of the roof

Galaxy - Gearbox has turned up but I didnt want to start that until at least one of the first three was working

I also have a dead Focus on the drive interfering with the game of musical cars, this isnt even mine !

Might be more effective to stick your toe in the blender.

Anything plugged into the lighter socket ?  Permanent live. Ask me how I found out (dashcam). Or boot not shut properly (lock sticks) and light on all the time (done that one too)

Posted

Boot might be the culprit although it has been parked with the bonnet not shut either.

Just driven down to the garage and unless an oil and filter change sorts the CVT out its future looks sketchy.
The lunging and lurching didnt improve with a few minutes running time.

I dismantled my iPhone to replace the home button and battery . I wish I’d opened the packet containing the new button before I dismantled it into 100 bits as the packet contained an envelope that contained an envelope with nothing in it.

I am leaning to the belief that the Internet speed has been slowed again to crawling speeds. This wouldn't be a problem but it's so slow I cannot even send a simple E-mail to a family member. I'm starting to believe the Internet hasn't been fixed at all.

Not really a grump but more like ambivalence here.

I have taken all of my cars to my trusted local garage for ten years now. My parents have also done the same.

The owner is a respectable gent, has all kinds of mechanical engineering degrees and takes a real interest in older cars. He drives a lovely MGB V8 Roadster, and the firm has a traditional smiley Transit recovery vehicle. I trust and value his opinon and judgement.  I also hold the foreman in equal regard together with the mechanics.

They have never ripped me off and I know their good reputation means they don't need  the work.

They have made the odd small error over that time but we are all human and it has never been anything significant.

However, over the past few months their attention to detail has slipped somewhat:

- Clio went in for a new radiator, new one was faulty and lashing out coolant. They didn't notice this and I had to come back and get a new one fitted. No charge though so can't really complain.

-Mini went in for new disks and pads, pads don't sit square against the disk when braking. Asked them to sort it when it was in for something else, they forgot.

- They fitted tyres, ine was incorrectly seated and deflated overnight. Had to get that sorted by a local tyre place, another £18.

-Mini again, they didn't refit the sump plug washer so oil leaked badly. They held their hands up and apologised though, fixed for no charge.

- Parent's Corsa was in for a service last week and now the bonnet doesn't sit properly anymore. It was fine before.

I feel a bit bad for even typing this as they are very good and if they make a mistake they do sort it, but there's only so many times this sort of thing can happen before you begin to feel a bit annoyed.

Should I give them another chance with the Clio's bottom arms and track rods or go to the nearby specialist I have been considering (all the folks on the Clio pages really rate them)?

I've had this with a number of garages I've used for a long time, the seem to become complacent, worth speaking to them about it and letting them know .

And indeed our Internet connection is slowing down veeeery slowly. Confirmed this by switching to the ISP provided router and it's painfully slow. Not 56K modem slow, but it'll get there if the engineers in the office don't give us a boost soon!

Streetwise CVTs are rare as rocking horse shit mate - is it the 1.6 or 1.8 ?

Uber rare - I think it's a ZF CVT box so anything from a 25/45/75 K-series should work, I'd have thought ?

Interesting quoted email on the MG-R forum about various faults with the CVT which may interest you ?

  Quote

Copy of email from ZF regarding gearbox problems, may be of use to someone.

Hi,
It used to be my job to support MG Rover and BMW with the CVT applications.
Regarding your CVT issue "little drive forwards, no faults stored", on the Rover 25 2002.
Has the car failure memory been read out ? If there are no fault codes stored against the Ratio actuator, or speed sensors, or Inhibitor switch etc. then it is likely to be an internal mechanical failure with the forward clutch or even valve body. Is the displayflashing P-F (for example when in Park position), or any transmission warning light on ?
Common issues with this transmission in the Rover application - causing failure codes and car to only seemingly drive in emergency mode (like being stuck in 1st gear or 4th gear in a manual car (depending on which sensor is faulty)):
Transmission output speed sensor faulty - replace sensor
Inhibitor switch signal corrupt - due to water in the switch connection to the gearbox - replace switch and clean out and seal the connection with silicon sealer etc.
Ratio control actuator faulty, or wiring connection to it loose on the gearbox (round connector on front of gearbox).
Gearbox interface unit - or wiring - fault
Camshaft and Transmission output sensor connectors mixed up near back of cylinder head - has cylinder head been off ? the connectors are the same design and can be mixed up. (Seen this a few times in the past).
For your information, ZF no longer own the production plant in Belgium for CVT, it is now owned by Punch Powertrain N.V. since ZF sold it in 2006. We no longer hold any parts or replacement transmissions for the CVT.

Read that a while ago, it seems that ZF binned the production as soon as Rover stopped existing.
The car is mostly tidy, drivers door has eaten its internals by derailing the window glass and bending all the bits of coat hanger wire that operate  the door lock and central locking but its only done 46,000 miles.

Howmany left said there were two 1.8 CVT's

The house is absolutely full of spiders, that one was evading the cup and card method of capture by crawling up into an awkward corner of the bath. I can see 3 more, admittedly smaller, spiders from where I'm sitting right now. I think the spider population of my house is safe.

No sleep.

For two days.

But....

It is finally coming out of my face (sounds lovely don't it!) after coming up in some very interesting lumps and bumps - one of which looked like an enormous skin tag! - sorry to blight your breakfast/lunch with this news but I just wanted to share the misery around and also the very good news that the fucker seems to be going! Bloody hope so...

Just finished work having started at 9.

First half of the day involved giving leaflets to people who didn't want them and avoiding telling middle management to fuck off.

Second half involved cutting and boxing something in the order of 600 pizzas.

Now away to drive home and my dash is lit up like a Christmas tree. Lambda light, TRACS light, ABS light and bulb warning light.

Though in fairness the last one is always there.
