Good mate of mine had a stroke last week.  Seems he's recovering very well but that was a bit of a surprise...

Best wishes to your mate, tell him to stay positive. I am a stroke survivor, seven years now.

What's the latest with the green machine? I might be available to help if you're having a day of fixage at some point.

I think the plan is Saabnuts mate is going to have a go at it at some point. Replacement gearboxes and shafts are out there but expensive and, basically, a really crap design. TBH the car isn't ever going to be worth spending huge sums on, being it's an ex Hungary car that's been run into the ground before coming over here so the lookout for a suitable VAG engine/box combo is the likely option. This'll give me the benefit of 5 gears too to make it a more useful toy in the future. To compensate for all of these shenanigans, I'm giving them my P4 to play with, to pick up from me when he's got an empty trailer heading north. I'm in no rush as its my busy season at the moment (I'm just on a quick break with the wife before starting the next tour) and Nick's down at his other place for a while.

I think that's the plan, anyway but thanks for the offer of help!

While we're moaning about work...

My department is at the end of an eighteen-month long change programme, intended to save money, modernise and make us more efficient for the future as demand is certain to rise (this will be the case for literally everyone in the public sector, I realise).

Eighteen months of worry (I didn't really think I'd be made redundant but you can't help thinking about it), meetings, workshops, time-and-motion studies, not to mention huge amounts of tax money wasted on fucking "management consultants" and all for what? Basically the same plan that my colleagues and I came up with in a couple of hours at the very beginning of the process.

They're not even doing some of the things that we came up with. What a total waste of time and money.

I smashed my phone a few months back but it kept working.

However something has presumably got in the crack as the screen is self interacting, made even worse in the heat. Annoyingly I got it on a two year finance (0%) with Samsung and screen repair is £300 or so.

Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade my sim only to a handset as this is driving me nuts.

Tempted to go to iPhone to be honest, just out of boredom.

And the battery on this thing is now awful. 8 hours of use maybe?

Posted

8 hours is quite good especially if you're using the screen and mobile data through the day.

Not sure which samsung you have, but a new screen in my A6 was only 80 fitted at local phone shop.

Having worked in an consultant role more than once, I feel your pain.

The best Lean manufacturing implementation I've seen was done by 2 manufacturing engineers who had previous experience of being subject to major change but no influence over it. And they just decided one day to apply what they knew whilst the boss was on looking term sick leave.

With Mrs CW being a driving instructor, I'm always noticing other driving school cars - what models are used and how they're signwritten.

The grump? That another local driving instructor thought it wise to use a Golf R as a car for driving instruction. Unless these have a 'learner' mode (like the opposite to 'Sport' mode) that dumbs the 300bhp lump down to something that won't bite when the novice driver stomps on the throttle by accident, I think putting people with no driving skills in control of one is just irresponsible.

Posted

I bet it's not actually a Golf R.

They do R-line models. They have all the trim of the R, including the badge on the grille and everything, but they're a 1.2 turbo or something silly like that.

Ive often wondered how many people pay £15 a month to insure a phone for 2-3 years on a phone worth a couple of hundred quid.

True. Although some “premium” bank accounts have all manner of add ins such as gadget insurance, car breakdown, etc and we forget that we have these benefits. Might be worth double checking what sort of bank account you have, you never know.

That said there is always an excess. I got a replacement iPhone though mine but the excess was £75. Sure it’s a fully refurbed one, as good as new but I probably could have just bought a second hand one from eBay for less.

You don’t get much for a couple of hundred quid these days

You can insure against anything these days, dental insurance, drains cover, tyre insurance, spectacle cover. You could easily spent 15-20% of your income on insuring everything. Car insurance that's obviously a necessity but a lot of the other stuff is a waste of money.

I know two people who wish they’d insured their £700 mobile phone - one was mugged and the other lost their phone on a night out

My Moto G5+ cost not a lot more than that and is still going strong 2 years later

Yes I know smartphones for less than the £550-£1000 of a flagship Apple/Samsung phone do exist - most people who would bother with insuring a phone probably don’t have one though

Oh & grump. I popped out at lunch to speak to a local bike shop so I was in the car with the wheel in the boot. I get stuck behind dittering doris the dementia display driver, at no point did she get past 25mph in a 40 zone on free flowing roads & there appeared to be three invisible cars in front of her when she got near a queue.

FFS when ya that bad you must know, GIVE UP!

I pay £13 per month to cover both my wife and my phone, breakdown cover and holiday insurance. Nationwide Plus account but other banks offer similar for similar money.

I dropped my phone and smashed the screen. Was too lazy to get it fixed as it worked enough (only the corner of the screen). Then managed to smash it again and completely bugger it up. So decided to actually claim on the insurance. £25 excess + cost of special delivery to the repair centre. They repaired and delivered it back in a couple of days. Being a Samsung S8+, the screens are really susceptible to damage - even with a bumper case on. First time I actually claimed on that insurance (well I have used the breakdown part) but I'm very glad I paid it. I can't imagine that big screen is that cheap to replace.

Don't forget spare parts insurance, I decided to add this to my car insurance apparently covers malicious and accidental damage or theft

This screwdriver keeps jumping out the screw heads.

Is it the right bit?

Turn the torque down.

I did but it just kept clicking.

My g/f and I have a very similar deal with TSB and the breakdown service (via The AA) has been excellent.
