The grumpy thread

I finally managed to get myself over to the unit to sort out the rust repair on that door I'd chopped most of the bottom off.  Cutting out the repair panel I sliced my thumb open pretty spectacularly, just as well I'm one of those sorts it's difficult to get blood out of otherwise it would've made a right old mess.  Got about halfway through the welding in of the new piece and the welding gas ran out.  Because of the Princess head work, there isn't the spare funds for a few more weeks now to get the gas replenished.

Another spanner was thrown in the house move recently when my other half's landlord gave notice on the place he's in which I'd started to move my stuff, including furniture, into.  So it's back to being in limbo again.  A house has been viewed with a hope to purchase (not a great hope, given our track record so far) but the sale won't complete before the tenancy expires and we're now looking at single occupancy options to broaden the options on a rental property.  That means my house move is stalled AGAIN, because single occupancy means just that, there'd be no space for me so I have to stay in the north east living out of boxes.  We can't even make plans to see one another in person, 300 miles each way makes a 'quick visit' pretty much impossible for either of us, you have to spend pretty much a whole day driving just getting there and back.

All we want is to live in the same house and to get on with our lives but this has been the most infuriating house move I've ever experienced.  We've been messed about so many times it's unreal.  All we can do is work and plod on as best we can in the hope this doesn't drag on for as many years as it has so far.

This particular house move saga began in November 2016 when we started looking for a place in earnest.  Location, house type and size are all dictated by work requirements (we're both self-employed, it makes things extra awkward),  inflated prices of the south east, and an impossible string of awkward sellers and bad luck means we're no closer now than we were when we began the endeavour and I can tell you it's wearing very thin at this particular point in time.  So far it has managed to reinforce every single negative opinion I've ever acquired about the people and business practices of the south east.

Fucking Lancaster insurance company!

I was trying to insure the Rover, only to be told that 'We can't insure this type of vehicle'

But because they now know I don't have the BMW, they have written to me to say they are cancelling the policy. Which means I will be charged the cancellation fee, which will be pretty much the rest of the policy. I have 7 days to insure another vehicle.

Does anyone have a 'classic' that is off the road I could 'insure'? Not sure what else to do, I'd rather keep the policy open in case I end up with a second car which they can insure.

216 cab? Lancaster have insured one for me in the past.

PM me if you want to give it a go.

Had a walk up to our local shop earlier, can't go near it normally for all the smokers outside the pub and usually use the local-ish Aldis and Lidls.

Car is in Scotland on holiday so have to walk, not my preferred mode of locomotion.

Only wanted milk, bread and fruit/veg.

The first two OK, bread took some finding.

No fruit or veg other than tinned but several aisles and chillers filled with a very impressive range of booze.

I suppose it is people like me to blame for using the larger shops and supermarkets but a very limited range of goods available.

There is a better one about half an hour's walk away.  Bugger that in this heat.

Will they not ask if you’re the registered keeper of the car? I think they will.

I used to be so chilled about insuring stuff that I would often do it when the car was outside on my drive. But, now, it’s a minefield with no hard and fast rules and little in the way of rhyme and reason. So I now check, quite boringly, every single time.

How much is it on a normal policy? I fell foul of “classic rules” when I had that yellow 306 convertible. In the end it was £270 for the year fully comp with 0 NCB on it but 10 years on my main car.

Likewise, my Granvia has to stay on a standard policy because import and because MPV. It’s now £300 for the year. Not the end of the world.

You insure a car you are going to buy, nothing to say you can't change your mind and not buy it.... ;)

They say 'Will you be the registered keeper?'

Rover is quite expensive on a normal policy, think I'm paying 48 quid per month, will change next year.

Aye fair enough. I’m not your Mum or owt. Just be careful that the car you insured isn’t insured elsewhere. They really get the hump about that!

If you don’t need the policy I’d cut my losses and sack it. Then, when you need a classic policy, go to someone useful like PBIS who have been immaculate for me.

Aaaaand, that's another house failure.  The rented property other half was looking to move into has now also fallen through, because of course it has.  So we're back to no viable properties to rent or buy within budget in our area and he's only a few weeks to find something before the last resort of moving in with his folks which, I can tell you, nobody wants.  At least there is a get out, that's something, but still.  Can someone remind me why people want to live in the South East again?  I'm struggling to see the benefits lately.

No, they say, 'Are you the registered keeper?' And you reply,  'I soon will be'. Like we all did when we were insuring that Y10 that did the rounds a few years ago. And I'm sure that we would have each become the registered keeper as a matter of some urgency, had matters necessitated  it! Good luck, although I'm pretty sure that if it's the insurance company that cancels a policy, as in this instance, here's a whole lot less to pay than if you were to cancel it.

PBIS insure the unloved 45 which is a 2000 reg car under their classic umbrella.

I will have to retract this offer, sorry.

My potentially new car is too new for Peter James to insure.  So instead of paying a £20 charge to insure it instead of the 405, I'll move the policy over to the 205 instead.

And add the new car to the moderns aviva policy for .... £31.

I call bullshit on that - they cover my 214SLi K reg on a standalone cherished car policy.

They said that 'the current insurer' wouldn't cover it. I presume they are just a broker in that case?

They mentioned something about a cancellation and re-insure, that would have cost me a higher premium.

I wasn't happy going for a higher premium when I was going from a 2.0 Coupe to a 1.6 saloon.

Another London cop hit several times with a machete by a van driver stopped as the van showed no insurance.

London mayor Sadiq Khan sad he was "utterly appalled by this sickening attack".

Tell you what Sadiq, rather than offering platitudes and soundbites, how about putting more cops on the streets? And listen to what the police and community groups are saying, rather than insist that London is safe and is becoming safer.

Sorry-rant over.

Who decides the Metropolitan Police budget?

Would that be the Mayor or the Home Secretary.

Home Secretary (incidentally, she is my MP).

However, Khan insists London is getting safer, statistics show that in the capital murders are up,  knifings are up, shootings are up, robberies are up, car theft is up, and so on.  I know that 70%of statistics are made up, but he offered none of his own in a recent TV interview in support of his claims.
