How many cars do you own?

Recommended Posts

Our household, (Mrs Spart and I), have been us;

1998 BMW Z3 1.9

2003 Citroen C3, ex Dean numbers, Mrs Sparts daily. T+I

1973 MGB.

1951 Ferguson tractor. T+I

1987 BMW 520.

2005 Seat Leon, mapped to 264bhp, for hooning, also used for lending out to friends etc. T+I

1988 Fiat Panda, summer toy. T+I

2002 LDV Convoy camper. T+I

2001 Toyota Hiace van, my work van, it's done 320,000+ now but still does the job. T+I

The ones not taxed and insured are either projects or just waiting for the right opportunity. I'll never get chance to do all the work on them that I want but I'm happy enough as the projects and the Panda are garaged. I feel better about the situation now I've moved the Nissan on, it was bothering me that I couldn't do it justice. I think the Z3 will be next to get moved on, then I'll be completely happy with the fleet size.

Four. Two on the road, two not.

'76 Triumph Dolly 1850HL - Runs and drives. Lives in a field, has been there for years.
'77 Triumph Dolly 1300 - Runs and drives, undergoing restoration.
'83 Triumph Acclaim L - Road legal, daily commuter.
'89 Volvo 740 estate - Road legal, crap hauler.

One.

I don't even go too far in it, plus the parking where I live is dreadful.

Posted

22 for me.... And that's only the cars.. Doesn't include bikes...

I'm going to thin that down some very soon... space, storage costs, and the inability to actually do anything with them being the issue...

Posted

3 for me, soon to be 4.

- 2005 Skoda Octavia 1.8T VRS - daily driver, modern and reliable option.

- 1996 Toyota Granvia 3.0TD 4x4 - camper conversion, sometimes daily driver, issues stacking up and soon to be sold on

- 1977 Princess 1800 - currently sat looking sorry for itself with no bonnet or fuel tank but will be back up and running soon, currently working on getting indoor storage as spending winter outside will be cruel to it otherwise

As of today there's a Transit incoming to replace the Granvia.

I have always maintained that 2 is a happy number - a daily and a spare, 3 is manageable if two are low maintenance and 4 is too many.  I have one driveway space and two roadside permits, I can store one temporarily elsewhere but not long term so this system works well enough.  I can't deal with more than one project at a time and I have zero tolerance for troublesome or non-functional cars!

Three for me and that’s a happy number, IMO. Each one is very different.

2012 Mondeo Titanium X Sport estate 2.2 TDCi - daily and sometimes bike carrier.

2004 Ssanyong Rexton 2.9TD - workhorse and bike carrier.

1992 Toyota MR2 turbo - fun/project/keeper.

How come the Reliant is MOT exempt?

I'm in Ireland. There's no roadworthiness test for motorcycles or tricycles and the reliant is registered as a trike.

Seven, with an eighth due to join the fleet at an as yet unagreed point in time. Five road legal, though two are on Covid MOTs and one on exception.

To be honest, I'm definitely feeling the strain at this point, and it's notable that two cars are just being entirely ignored at the moment, and I'm still struggling to keep up.

its quite hard to juggle alot of cars and give them all breathing space, i just seem to constantly be attracted to buying more chod.

Only 2 here, have had 3 at times but that's my limit with a 2-car driveway and not loads of road space.

You guys with 5, 10 cars plus, do you have massive driveway space or are half of them kept in storage away from home or something?

I'm always tempted to have another cheap car or two but I think it'd feel like a waste if I had to pay to keep it somewhere else, and I know I'd end up never actually using it.

my answer is all of the above, i store cars literally anywhere, technically i have a drive space for one car but we currently have 7 at home.

I have no driveway at all.  The Suzuki lives in the Disabled space painted in front of our house; the Cadillac lives in the back alley, across my yard wall (no8) and next door's (no6); the Volvo gets parked wherever I can find space, usually at the end of the street.  If a fourth member joined the fleet, it would likely go where the Volvo is, and I'd just move the Volvo into a neighbouring street.  You see now why I'm calling 3 my absolute limit!

Just three. I'm a total amateur in the company of some proper proffessionals.

'06 saab 9-5 1.9 tid sport. Gf's daily.

'89 mx-5 my weekend car and bought from @motorpunkof this parish.

'16 transit custom limited. My daily.

They are all road legal.

This is probably my normal amout but I've been known to have two hobby cars on occasion. I have no off street parking or I'd definitely have a doer upper.

Currently 6 - all set and ready to go - but only 1 taxed.

The one on the road does the least miles per gallon....

Stuff that has my name on the V5:

2002 BMW 520i -Runaround

2004 SAAB 9-5 estate - dog kennel

2002 VX220 - Barn find. If something doesn't turn up to replace the 520 then I may need to find it.

1983 944 Lux - Pending file

1978 Fiat X1-9 Lido - Pending file

1978 Dolomite Sprint - Nice car but I'm just not a tinkerer

1955 (I think) Bedford RLZH - Nice but see above.

Trade insurance is a curse.  I've got a workshop so I keep most of it there, aside from her new beetle at her Dad's and my daily or the van depending what I'm doing at the time.

That's also why I have "too many".  I have started to rationalise, the Mégane has gone, the two Mercs gone and the 220 petrol Mondeo went, unfortunately it was terminally rotten and if I'd known that at the time I'd have broken it and scrapped it myself rather than put someone else through that heartache.

Once the classic beetle is done and the Caravelle finished then I need a long hard think about the future of my Mk3 Mondeo estate too.

I've currently got 3 well 4 in the household if you count Mrs C's Seat Leon

Citroen DS5

Renault Megane R56

Mk3 Ford Granada 2.8

Sometimes I think that's too many. For me the days of mass car ownership dies when they changes the rules around the car tax going with the car when you bought it.

it use to be be perfectly possible to have a trade insurance account and have 7-8 road worth cars all which you'd bought with tax you could drive around. I don't really fancy taxing 7-8 cars a month at £20 a month.

The max I've had is 9 cars. I had them parked in various streets around town as well as having 2 on my drive and another 2 in garages. That is WAAAAY too many.

Three, all road legal.

- 406 V6. No longer a daily and driven when I want to enjoy it or park somewhere that an anonymous car is a bonus
- i3S. Used for all short journeys and by Mrs 406 V6
- A modern that I won’t admit to as it’s not sh*te

I’m amazed by Ron’s Cortina collection earlier in the thread and his huge new garage. We need pics.

3 at the mo, usual state of affairs.

2007 Merc E320 cdi estate daily/winter car. Good at the minute except untraceable rattle on front suspension.

2000 BMW Z3 2.8 .  Main car over summer, now wearing sensible  winter hardtop  headgear.

1985 Lorinser Mercedes  500 SEC, good at the minute with a little  but expensive jobs list.

All on the key and on the road. My ideal number of cars is 2.5, I feel slightly uneasy with 3 but bored with 2!
