And this was mine, the paint was wrecked as it had been "stored" under a plastic sheet

Did you know its original reg?  There was one registered ODX358, identical but scruffier for sale in Ipswich back in 1998. I wanted it but couldn't raise the pathetic sum the guy was asking, £500 I think. He also had a tender Cortina Mk 1 estate with the plastic wood strips but that was considerably more money even then.

A good chance they are one and the same car, as ODX 358 is on a nasty modern BMW diesel...

@LightBulbFun should be able to confirm!

currently waiting for @wuvvum to respond first if he knows or not, as these look ups do cost me a small amount of money/credit, so if he already knows then I can save myself the credit  :)

(assuming my own curiosity does not get to me first!)

It was pretty crusty from memory (how the fuck was that 22 years ago...?) so once the plate was off it I'd imagine the car didn't live to see this century.. My grandad had a new FB Super with the column change in 1964 (BUJ107B) and despite him not really being a car man he always remembered it fondly. Trig, yours looks a beauty and I can't wait to see it again. I might have that copy of PC in the shed somewhere, if I can find it it's yours.

I'm still chipping away at little jobs on this to keep me sane at the moment, mostly started with removing some of the tacky plastic chrome that had been added too it, unfortunately the stuff on the boot took the paint off so had to do a local repair as well as a dent on the sill of the front wing.

IMG_20200514_172901_1.thumb.jpg.a843ba14e79e1abf08d6760dbc8648ca.jpg

I've also swapped all the rusty wood screws for stainless screws which look a lot nicer, I did swap the screws in vin plate but  I'm not convinced it's the original...

IMG_20200504_145827.thumb.jpg.12d469658645a8dbdf5c5868c2fc86c4.jpg

I think I'm going to have to source a replacement! I then bought a pair of mirrors, after deciding where to fit them

IMG_20200514_161602.thumb.jpg.b082368c71ad1db7c965ee743089752e.jpg

I went for the door and attacked it with a drill, scary!

IMG_20200514_164621.thumb.jpg.9df68cc50c2e0751e44d24278371df60.jpg

They look good though!

IMG_20200514_165902.thumb.jpg.d2dc5c910834a2c1047b4b26a84019ec.jpg

I swapped the RAC badge for a more period 60s one that I had in a drawer.

IMG_20200516_125301.thumb.jpg.238c8f5c72609d27b39088d6bb36e24a.jpg

IMG_20200516_125256.thumb.jpg.87be9cc3db07c7c5a64d735a37fbcc26.jpg

And I've now fitted some front seat belts which took a bit of working out but seem OK, the seat hits the inertia when it's fully slid back but I don't think it will be a problem.

IMG_20200514_203132.thumb.jpg.0d16e35da3af0eb3e0821a360cff9ab6.jpg

I've still got to fit the rear belts but they look a bit of a arse to fit so I'll need some help with those!

IMG_20200516_125513.thumb.jpg.f32fa7e11b97fb2d2caa78143f72adce.jpg

And I'm currently painting the wheels, I'm going for silver now but still can't decide on the white walls, it's £200 for 4 which isn't bad and I need two new tyres but can't decide if it will be a bit much?

IMG_20200516_175643.thumb.jpg.6c69a96175e3b7c11838d69d49bb6d73.jpg

And how it currently sits, I'm also thinking if changing the plates to black and white ones too.

LOL @ the VIN plate.

Those door mirrors do quite suit it.  Probably a bit more useful than the clip-on quarterlight jobbies too.

That VIN plate is spectacularly half-arsed! :D

Love the VIN plate, like the mirrors, would dislike whitewalls.  But my taste rarely aligns with the majority, so probably best ignored!

Where did you get your seat belts Trig? Just wondering whether to swap the fixed ones for inertia in my 1300.

WHS. Whitewalls are horrible.

To add my twopennorth to the whitewall debate. I’ve looked at a lot of Launch material and brochures on Vauxpedia and didn’t notice a single FB with whitewalls, it seems Vauxhall we’re making a definite statement about moving into the 60’s with a modern European look and moving away from the scaled down Detroit image of their past.

They don’t even list them as  available accessories.

This.

Whitewalls are fine on a select few big British cars of the 50’s and 60’s or big Yanks. But I think on this it looks brilliant without them, I think it’d look too fussy (dare I say tacky!) and overdone with them.

Its a stunning car though!

Just cut some white rings from card and fit with double sided tape

Ignore their advice and go for it!  ?

Looks superb, great looking motor.

Don't put white walls on, IMHO it'll look crap. It's a lovely clean shape (particularly so for a 1960's car) it would I think make it look fussy.

Lovely car.

When I had a Chevrolet I found the GM Heritage Centre very comprehensive on getting some info on the VIN code and other stuff. Not sure how they cover Vauxhall.

But is worth a look  and maybe mailing them - GM really seem to value their past in the US.

Random post, but I saw this on the cross-channel ferry last year.  Probably just going for a day trip and trundle around Calais.

Had one of these for a bit around 2006. NWR641A. Really lovely things and actually drive very well given how old they are. Swapped it for a Cresta PB !

Posted

Why not put white walls on the nearside and normal tyres on the offside ?

To be honest it's your car do it just how you want it.

Posted

Whitewalls would look good against a white roof for the bling factor (plus white plates as you mentioned?) Plus you do see them duo tone But it would be getting a bit bling by that stage.

Posted

It’s the Cortina Coachline Height Question all over again!

My two penneth: I reckon it would look quite good with thin white lined tyres (as opposed to full white sidewalls), but not so good that I’d bother.

Especially as it looks spot on without. Gilding the lily, innit.

Posted

I did ask the same question on the Victor page on Facebook and got the same response! The tyres i was looking at was these at £200 for 4.

s-l1600.jpg

So not a massive white wall, just a little one, Its really opened a debate though, Mrs T likes them and I do need three tyres anyway but i don't want to bling it up more than it is, the Dutch seemed keen on them though.

Image description

I'll have to sleep on it a second night, i guess if i do just buy 3 Falkens again it will leave enough change to pay for the new plates that I'd like...

These are Securon 500/W ones from Jayar on Ebay, W means it has a stork with webbing rather than hard wire which is handy for getting between the bench seat (Thanks to Mash for the tip) and they also extend out further than the standard 500/30 belts.

I'd admit they'd look smart on an early 60s car, and you have removed the headlight peaks... Although, IIRC you do have a boggo spec car for plebs, not a DeLuxe. ;)
