Good lord, that SD1 is amazing. The only time I've ever come across a diesel one was a rather sad example in an abandoned scrapyard (now sadly long gone) back in about 2002. I posted some photos of it at the time on an SD1 owners forum and the general consensus was that they were 'rare for a reason' and even the enthusiasts weren't keen. I cannot imagine any sort of old diesel engine would suit the SD1 at all, all the more reason for that one to be saved.

Ideal for parts of continental Europe where diesel was half the price of petrol, I believe they sold quite well there. Diesels hadn't really taken off in the UK when the SD1 was current.

It would go really well with a later 2.5 4 headed monster, they're good for 120bhp and 200 lb/ft of torque standard.

I posted a photo I took of an SDI Smoke bomb on the thread about photos of cars in Spain. It too has long gone to the breakers I just wish I could have saved it. Smoke bombs are or were the bread and butter sales for France, Spain and some other  European counties.

The motor is an Italian VM unit, which was also fitted to the Range Rover.

At the time the car was the fastest diesel engine car on the road, buy a long stroke. Just like the Diesel 205 with turbos vastly under rated.

I took some pictures of the engine PhD one at ormskirk autofest a couple of years ago.

Multiple cylinder heads.

This belonged to a mate of mine and has had a few changes of keeper lately.....Jeff sold it a while back to an older geezer who almost literally bit (or gummed...) his hand off for it.   It was a nice running car at the time (Jeff always keeps his motors top notch).   Sadly the old feller passed away a very short while after he bought it and it seems to get pimped a little bit more with every subsequent owner.

Here it is about 3 years ago...
