Is it lithium ion though? I thought jump packs tended to be gel or lead acid?

It's one of the wee ones - just bigger than a mobile phone..

Not seen 'em that small, no idea what's in them myself.

What effect if any does ignition timing have on air/ fuel ratios?

It shouldn't have any effect whatsoever.

Scottish shiters may be able to help me on this one, it's a memory I have of being dragged around the countryside by my parents 30-odd years ago and traveling through a town or village on, IIRC, the eastern side of Scotland, maybe in fife or closer to the borders.  If you've been on this road, I think you'll remember it, so:

The road travels across what I can only describe as a carse, with fields either side.  On a hillside that appears to be at the end of the carse there's a town or village, but the route into the town doesn't appear visible from the road you're on, i.e. you can't see where the road goes into the town.  Suddenly, however, the road does a bit of a wiggle, and you're there - in the town, in the town centre, and it's a bit, "how the fuck did that happen? WOW!".

It's been bugging me for years, because my parents couldn't remember it even when they were alive.

OK, so I have heard of a Y reg(newer shape) ** BMW 3 series going Verrr cheap..tis but a lowly poverty spec, so question is , how hard/easy are they to upgrade from scrap yard?

Last thing I upgraded was my Mondeo Mk3 which was pretty much plug n play with leather, sounds, and dash..But having read a few posts on here about hedgehogs and the such it got me wondering..

Cheers all

This shape BTW **

As someone who tinkers with a BMW or two, not much is scrap yard prices! Alot to be said for a well maintained standard vehicle.

However check subframe mounts on tbh e back!!! It's killing alot of e46 off at the moment. If it's a 318 and it rattles, it's going to be a highway in the sky job

What size Torx socket is equivalent to a 10mm hex socket (i.e. a 10mm hex will get a grip on the bolt head but not enough to get it undone without nomming it)?  Is it an E10 I need, or is it not that simple?

Posted

Just get a better 10mm side drive socket. Or hammer a 3/8" AF over it.

That's an normal hex on the outside (which I assume from your "E10" reference which is hexalobular on the outside of the head)

Posted

Just buy a set of torx sockets, they aren't too much & you'll only need them more & more as time goes on.

^^ I had 'anti tamper' (hole in the end) torx drivers - for various chip&pin and till cover access screws.

Poking a fine electricians driver into the torx fixing and 'snapping off' the little pip/pin ensured no such shenanigans next visit.. lol

Rot like you would not beleive on a car so modern.

The last proper BMWs were the E36 and E39.

Wouldn’t really expect suspension mounts rusting off on a ‘premium’ car. Probably days of them being a quality car went in the mid 90’s. Today probably no more ‘quality’ than anything else.

Any thoughts on this or could it be something else. Astra Diesel 2004 1.7 DTi, oil lights on but enough oil in it. I’ve suggested it’s probably the pressure switch, hasn’t had the oil dropped in several years so that won’t have helped so to do that as well. Oil will be about the consistency of Marmite... I said you’d be as well scraping it out with something blunt than draining it.

What has anyone used successfully in the past to clean up UV degraded Polycarbonate headlamps?  The Mercedes of Doom has failed it's ticket, significantly on headlamp beam pattern and reduced light output, which is a bit of a ball-ache.

I used the Meguires kit from Halfords but basically sandpaper of many grades and finish off with a polish like G3 should be the same as that is what the kit is. (or something like that)

Posted

I used Autosol. About £3 from hardware shop, if it’s really bad it might want some 1200 wet and dry then something a bit more abrasive. You can get these kits for £15 but I’m a tightwad so resorted to the cheaper stuff and it worked. Took quite a while though.

Didn't someone on here do that job with toothpaste?

E36s rot worse than anything and I use to be into Opel Mantas and old Nissans. Much better looking than an '46 IMO though. Plus Joe Winklehock;

Regularly. Used to buy entire boxes of Tesco value toothpaste when I was trading.

Toothpaste or Farecla cutting compound works fine, but you really need the sealing stuff to polish it with to stop it being as bad again in 3 months

Posted

Yeah, the Toyota got a seeing to with Autosol and a foam pad in my drill, it improved things massively but ~6 months on and its noticably regressing. Whatever you need to seal it against future yellowing is worthwhile.

have a look at my fixerating thread for details of what I did - 90% fine but needs something to stop it returning.
